Athletics

Mariemont students are well known for being excellent in athletics. For a school of our size, we are fortunate to be able to off er such a wide range of competitive athletic teams. Tryouts, practices, and schedules are too lengthy to include here, so please contact the high school offi ce for further information on any team. Tom Nerl, the district athletic director, can help you by giving details or by putting you in contact with the coach of the team. NOTE: Incoming 9th grade students interested in playing sports must have passed 75% of their 4th quarter 8th grade classes. Go Warriors!

Art Club

The Art Club’s mission is to nurture a passion for the visual arts. Any student of Mariemont High School is welcome to join the art club. Previous art experience and participation in visual art classes is helpful and recommended but not required.

Art Club’s primary purpose is to create an environment that encourages a love of working with new materials and the marketing of their products, culminating in raising funds for the annual Art Club Scholarship. Our primary source of income comes from a variety of handcrafted items sold throughout the school year. In the past we have also participated in activities such as creating murals around school and other public artwork initiatives. In May, Art Club members are responsible for Night of the Art exhibits and Scholarship presentations.

Book Club

Mariemont High School Book Club meets every Friday morning starting at 7:45 a.m. in the library media center for food, fellowship and fun. We are a stress-free club welcoming anyone as a member with no requirements other than to keep an open mind. We typically choose one book to read together every 6-9 weeks which we borrow from the Public Library of Cincinnati and Hamilton County. We also have weekly activities and discussions about books in general.

Book Club sponsors activities and contests during the year such as the Halloween Costume Contest, author visits, quarterly movie events, game nights, and the annual Book Club Ball. We sometimes go on fi eld trips to other libraries and regularly invite special guests to come to our meetings to discuss their favorite books and their lives as readers.

Chess Club/Chess Team

Chess Club meets once a week during lunch for friendly competition in a relaxed atmosphere. Chess Club also participates in regional competitions with area districts and a year-end tournament. All are welcome to join – no experience necessary.

Chorus/Showstoppers

Showstoppers is Mariemont High School’s pop a cappella group, meaning that all of the accompaniment is vocal! Using vocal percussion and a variety of vocal harmonies, voices only recreate the sounds of our favorite current pop songs. Each year we perform a variety of modern pieces at school concerts and community events. Showstoppers is a select group. Interested students must perform an audition for at the beginning of the year. Students must display a strong, pop vocal style of singing, be able to hold their own vocal part independently, and sight read. Participants should have experience in vocal music performance, such as participation in the Jr. High or High School choir, or private instruction. Showstoppers meets 1-2 times per week at lunch and/or warrior bell.

Creative Writing Club

Creative Writing Club is for students interested in meeting with other student writers and developing their writing. The club meets once a week during lunch. Students have the opportunity to write, share, and discuss their work with other young writers. The club is student-led and provides members with thought-provoking topics to consider and encourages personal writing goals. Creative Writing Club also shares publication and workshop opportunities outside of school.

DECA

DECA prepares emerging leaders and entrepreneurs in marketing, fi nance, hospitality and management. DECA provides students the opportunity to compete for local, state, and international

Offi cer Roles, compete for events and scholarships, attend leadership conferences, and perform service-learning projects. DECA is co-curricular, meaning students must be enrolled in a High School of Business course to become a member. Membership includes 220,000 students and advisers throughout the United States, Canada, Mexico, Puerto Rico, Guam, China, Korea, Japan and Germany.

Environmental Club

Environmental Club is based on pursuing environmental change and providing education for the community. The club, open to students in grades 9-12, meets about once every month and works on diff ering projects throughout the years. Currently we have been working on removing invasive plants and trees along Miami Bluff s. The group works towards making the community an eco-friendlier place.

ESports

Mariemont Esports teams were established in 2019 and seek to provide students with the opportunity to play team organized and competitive Overwatch, Rocket League, and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate in the Esports Ohio League throughout the Fall and Spring seasons. A time commitment is required each season to meet for practice, regular season matches, and playoff matches. As Esports grows there are opportunities for scholarships from major colleges, etc. so students who excel at them can continue their careers into college if they choose.

Fall Play

Every November, a play is performed with the purpose of getting students involved in the theatre. Students in grades 9-12 may audition for acting parts in early September. Technical positions for lights, sound, backstage work, props, and set building are arranged in late September/ early October. There is something for everyone in the dramatic productions, not just those interested in performing. Students have fun while working together and while learning about the art of the theatre.

Rehearsals are held at least three days a week after school and some Saturdays between early September and late November.

Future Leaders of Medicine

In Future Leaders of Medicine Club, those who are interested in going into the medical fi eld can explore possible careers, learn from professionals in the fi eld, and explore college options. Students have the opportunity to share their career interests and aspirations with other members of the club. Meetings will be held with current medical professionals and students will have the opportunity to ask questions and learn more about diff erent medical career options. Future Leaders of Medicine Club is a great option for students who wish to learn about the next steps to achieving their goals in healthcare and gain an overall greater understanding of medicine.

High School Band

The Mariemont High School Band is a full year curricular course open to all students in grades 9-12 who demonstrate profi ciency and/or have a desire to play a band instrument. The Band participates in various activities throughout the school year:

Concert Band:

The concert band performs in school concerts and in OMEA District XIV sanctioned events.

Marching Band:

The marching band performs in community parades and at all home and away football games.

Pep Band:

The pep band performs at home basketball games.

Color Guard:

This auxiliary unit is the visual component of the marching band. The color guard performs in parades and at all home and away football games.

Indoor Drumline:

The indoor drumline is one of the sports of the arts. The drumline is an extracurricular, competitive musical ensemble that is active through the winter and spring months. Auditions are held annually. Rehearsals are arranged at the discretion of the director(s), and generally take place afternoons and evenings. Performances and competitions are held in the evenings and/or on weekends.

International Club

The International Club is dedicated to enrich awareness and understanding of diff erent cultures throughout the MHS community. This club aims to facilitate culture learning and exchange to further foster cultural appreciation among students and staff . It also provides opportunities for Mariemont students to socialize and build lifelong friendships with exchange students. The goal is to bring international experiences to all Mariemont students. Our main event is the annual international day held in the Spring. Cultural activities and games will be held to off er opportunities for students to learn about other cultures.

Journalism/ The Blueprint

The Mariemont High School Blueprint is the offi cial school newspaper for MHS. The class is perfect for students interested in investigating and exploring stories from our community. Additionally, students will meet in class daily all school year to create and publish articles. The class is focused on accurate, unbiased storytelling and the use of creative media.

Key Club

Key Club is an international service organization affi liated with Kiwanis. Any students, grades 9-12, who are interested in performing community service, are invited to participate. The fall organizational meeting is the time for new members to join. Dues required.

To be considered an active member, students must perform 12 hours of community service (6 credits). These activities include but are not limited to: ushering at plays, working at the Mariemont Kiwanis Art Fair, attending Senior/Senior proms at local nursing homes, and the annual canned food drive.

Mariemont Kiwanis, which helps to sponsor Key Club, typically provides up to $15,000 in merit-based scholarships to MHS seniors and graduates each school year. Kiwanis gives extra consideration to those applicants who are members of Key Club.

Latin Club

Mariemont Latin Club meets every other Wednesday at lunch. Students prepare projects for the annual Ohio Junior Classical League Convention held in Columbus in March. Students compete against Latin Club students from schools throughout the state in a variety of competitions: club competitions such as banner, scrapbook, and skit; performance competitions such as dramatic interpretation, oratory, and Latin recitation; artistic competitions such as drawing and painting, ceramics, and photography; and academic competitions such as mythology, vocabulary, Roman history, derivatives, and literature. Outstanding projects are eligible for the annual National Junior Classical League Convention. Dues are $6.00 per year.

Latin Quiz Team

Mariemont Latin Quiz Team practices every other Wednesday at lunch (staggered with Latin Club). Students answer questions in a quiz show format on Latin language and vocabulary, classical culture and civilization, and Greco-Roman mythology. Students compete in teams against Latin Quiz teams from area high schools. Students compete according to their level of Latin: Novice (Latin I), Intermediate (Latin II), or Upper Level (Latin III, IV, AP). All matches (about fi ve per year) are held on Saturday mornings at universities (UC, Miami, Xavier) and high schools in the Cincinnati area. The Latin Quiz team season begins in October and ends in March with the state tournament in Columbus.

Leadership Council

The Leadership Council exists to foster leadership, character and decision-making skills while improving the community environment. This may be accomplished through major projects or small acts of kindness. Teachers (including Jr. High teachers) can nominate students in grades 9-12 who have demonstrated potential or leadership skills. The membership is limited to 50 members, spread out over all four grades. Members who fail to participate in club activities or miss two or more meetings are dropped from the roster. The Leadership Council generally meets the second and fourth Tuesdays of every month at lunch. Some examples of typical activities are: support of needy Mariemont/Cincinnati families at Christmas and other holidays, school improvement ideas, recognition of diversity and diverse holidays, leadership speakers, and mentoring and tutoring junior high school students.

Makerspace Club

Makerspace Club meets weekly in the MHS library to work on projects and learn how to use Makerspace tools like 3D printers, the Cricut, the Glowforge laser cutter, and the sewing machine. Come work on our passion projects with other student makers!

Mandarin Club

Mandarin Club is dedicated to creating awareness and an understanding of Chinese culture, heritage, and identity. The club aims to facilitate Mandarin language learning and cultural interactions among students and staff . Monthly meetings will involve but not limited to activities promoting cultural experience. There are no prerequisites to join, all MHS students are welcome to join.

Mariemont Movie Club

The Mariemont Movie Club is open to anyone and everyone interested in learning about analyzing, and watching a diverse collection of fi lms.

Every month the club will select a few fi lms to watch: some classics, some modern gems. At the end of the month, we get together and discuss them, book club style. Each member has the opportunity to rate the fi lm. The club creates an overall club review and movie rating that will be posted on the website https://letterboxd.com/.

The goal is to create a community for movie lovers to share and critique a range of genres and styles.

Cost is free, but we may collect money as the year goes on to provide snacks and drinks. Every member is encouraged to create an account on Kanopy (free with library card) and Peacock (the normal version is free). We’ll use these websites to select our fi lms.

Mariemont High School Class Offi cers

Four class offi cers are chosen by their classmates in an election held each spring. President, Vice President, Secretary, and Treasurer. Prospective candidates must register prior to the election with the current Student Council Advisor and attend an organizational meeting held with the current Class Advisor after school which defi nes the offi cers’ responsibilities. The primary function of the offi cers is to promote class spirit and provide leadership opportunities for themselves and their classmates. Specifi c responsibilities related to homecoming (the class fl oat and parade), the prom (junior year), and graduation (junior and senior year) are also involved. In addition, Class Presidents will serve ex offi cio on Student Council.

National Honor Society

NHS is an organization made up of juniors and seniors who lead and serve inside and outside of the classroom.

To be eligible for NHS, students must have a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 3.5 or higher. Students are invited to apply if they meet this standard. They must complete a detailed application that is reviewed by a committee of faculty and administrators. The application and accompanying documentation are important in the committee’s decision to accept or reject the candidate and should be completed with great care as acceptance into NHS is based not only on grade point average and scholarship, but on leadership, service, and character, as well. Once a student is selected to be a member of NHS, they must maintain the 3.5 GPA and uphold the qualities of scholarship, leadership, service, and character each semester.

Meetings are held as needed and activities include organizing and participating in service projects and peer tutoring. NHS members pay yearly dues of $25. Students must work hard during their 9th and 10th grade years to grow and develop leadership activities, community service, classroom leadership, and academic achievement that are the basis for membership.

Once a member of Mariemont’s chapter of NHS, participation in activities is mandatory, and absence from meetings or participation can be grounds for suspension or removal.

Pride Plus

Pride + is a club dedicated to providing a safe and affi rming school environment for all students, regardless of sexual orientation, gender identity, or gender expression. We meet each Friday during lunch in the library to discuss ways that we can work toward a more inclusive and respectful environment for all students and to develop a safe, supportive community for our members. Besides regular meetings and discussions, the club also collaborates with other MHS clubs to sponsor fun, inclusive events, hosts get-togethers with other school GSA’s and participates in fundraising and volunteering for local charities. All students are welcome to attend meetings.

Quiz Team

Quiz team is a competitive, and academic activity for which players can practice a range of questions from high school curriculum to current events, sports, and popular culture. Competitions feature a blend of individual and team collaboration, since it is likely not one player is an expert in all areas. This is a great way to master various areas of knowledge while showing off your own expertise in the midst of making friends in a game-like setting. In 2022 we hope to become an athletic sport and represent Mariemont High

School in local and national tournaments with other schools. Our meetings consist of friendly (but merciless and unbridled) competition in Mrs. MacLeod’s room every other Thursday during lunch. BYOL (bring your own lunch).

Robotics Team

The Robotics Teams work together to design, build and program robots to perform a variety of tasks. Teams have the option of competing in local, state and national competitions. The Robotics Team currently uses VEX robotics materials and software. The team meets after school one to two days a week. This club is open to anyone interested in robotics. No experience is necessary.

Service Projects Abroad

Service Projects Abroad is a club at Mariemont High School that allows students to travel, learn about diff erent places of the world, and support our community together. At meetings, about once a month, students of all grades will work together to fundraise for the ultimate goal of taking a service trip abroad their junior year. Activities include participating in the Kiwanis Art Fair in September, and other events created by the club. Along with fundraising students volunteer throughout the city together, we work with local nonprofi ts to better our own community by volunteering with Madisonville Education and Assistance Center, Ronald McDonald House, and Matthew 25 Ministries. Finally, Service Projects Abroad gives students a chance to take a service trip through EF Tours with their peers junior year. Destinations as of now are Nicaragua and Ecuador, with a choice of 7 countries to choose from. Service Projects Abroad is an amazing way for you to get involved in the high school, meet and work with other students of similar interests, and take an amazing trip dedicated to foreign volunteer eff orts and service learning.

Sources of Strength

Sources of Strength is a mental health wellness program that utilizes the power of peer social networks to change unhealthy norms and culture to ultimately prevent suicide. Sources of Strength takes an upstream approach in our prevention eff orts. Throughout the year, student leaders launch a variety of campaigns focusing on messages of hope, help, and strength. Student leaders are a diverse group of students who were nominated by their peers to be a part of the program.

Spanish Club

The Spanish Club promotes awareness of the Spanish language and culture at the local and global level. Activities and events refl ective of the Spanish/Latino culture are shared.

All students in grades 9-12 are welcome to participate by attending an introductory meeting in September. Meetings are during lunch, warrior bell or after school.

Activities could include participating together with crafts, music, fi lms, preparing foods, and investigating local Latino events.

Spirit Club

The Spirit Club is an organization made up of Mariemont students to promote MHS extracurricular activities. The Spirit Club is for students in grades 9-12 who wish to help build spirit within the school. The club has several promotional events each season to help increase the attendance, positive attitude, sportsmanship, and commitment to all MHS extracurricular activities.

Spring Musical

Each spring Mariemont High School students rehearse and perform a Broadway musical for the community. Auditions are typically held in mid-December and are open to all students grades 9 through 12. Audition materials are provided by the directors for all lead, supporting, and ensemble roles. Depending on which part you are auditioning, students may be asked to participate in an acting, singing and/or dance audition. Students may also choose to participate by working backstage on lights, sound, set, costumes, etc. instead of auditioning for a performance role.

Practices are held after school and include some evenings and Saturdays. Rehearsals are divided into chorus/vocal rehearsals, acting rehearsals, and choreography rehearsals until the last two weeks of the show when we bring everything together. Students are given a complete schedule of rehearsals following auditions to that confl icts can be avoided.

If a student is interested in a leading role, it is helpful to get as much vocal and dramatic experience as possible before auditioning. Participate in junior high and high school chorus classes, and perhaps take private voice lessons, music reading, acting classes, etc.

Stock Club

The MHS Stock Club is an investment club for students of Mariemont High School and is an offi cial, recognized extracurricular activity of the school.

The club has two primary objectives: 1. Education (e.g. how to save, investment terms, how to invest, stock research). 2. Having fun while learning! The club has two forms of learning. First, students each manage their own “virtual money” portfolio and compete against other members. This enables students to research, trade and manage a portfolio to learn about investment concepts. The member at the end of the school year with the largest portfolio will be awarded a $500 college scholarship. Second, the student members manage a portion of the Mariemont School Foundation investment portfolio! This gives students a chance to work together to manage real money and be accountable for decisions and trades.

The club meets once a month typically on Monday evenings from 7:00-8:30pm.

Student Council

The Student Council acts as the liaison between the student body and the faculty and administration. As the leaders of the school, class representatives organize student involvement and plan student activities.

Participation is by election held in the spring for the following school year. Interested students must see the advisor and submit a petition in order to be placed on the ballot. Meetings are held from time to time as needed.

A couple examples of student council activities done in prior years include organizing the Homecoming ceremonies and dance in the fall and arranging the Snowball dance. Student Council raises school spirit and, when appropriate, off ers new proposals to the administration on behalf of the student body. When students have questions or concerns at any point during the school year, they are encouraged to seek out their Student Council representatives and class offi cers.

Student Voices

Student Voices is a student-led committee consisting of diverse perspectives, which inform and drive positive change within our school culture and community. Membership is by invitation only.

World Aff airs Club

The World Aff airs Club is for students interested in international aff airs, diplomacy, and understanding other governments and cultures. Recently the club has competed in Model United Nations and international trivia competitions. We also seek to bring in guest speakers, view international fi lms, and discuss world events. The club typically meets monthly.

Yearbook

The Mariemont High School yearbook is a student-produced, award-winning publication. Students interested in being part of the yearbook staff are welcome to do so by signing up for the class that meets daily all school year. Occasionally, this group meets after school and a few times during the summer.

This course is all about learning how to create a book from start to fi nish, including writing, editing, taking photographs, designing, organizing, selling, and distributing the book itself. Students can become leaders in Yearbook (Editors and Managers) by excelling at aspects of those things listed previously.
