COMPETITION NAME EXTENSION OF ART MUSEUM BUNKIER SZTUKI Old Town, Cracow, PL LOCATION 2016 INFO KJ Architekci S.C. COLLABORATION 2nd distinction AWARD
COMPETITION FOR THE EXTENSION OF ART MUSEUM BUNKIER SZTUKI building is located in the Cracow Old Town in the surroundings of Planty Gardens. Proposal includes extension of Art gallery by adding one additional floor for the art space and one floor on the roof with the view over Szczepanski Square and the gardens. White glass volume is semi-tranparent and merges with white walls behind it. Therefore it divides spaces for communication and exhibition.
REDEFINTION OF THE FUNCTION
proposal defines relation place - object again. Builindg does not only ‘stands’ in Planty Gardens in front of the Palace of Fine Arts, but becomes the building through which we can feel ‘Genius Loci’ of the Cracow Old Town. Genius Loci, which is widely spoken in Cracow, is the magic impulse of creating unique and intelectual atmosphere of the place.
REDEFINITION OF THE FORM
museum expansion and re-development gives it new form. Elementary, modernist form designed by Krystyna Tolloczko in the 60th of the XX century has been given light and glass materials of XXI century.

is located between cities Lodz and Warsaw. It is the proposal for Poland’s biggest international airport, which could handle over 40 million passengers and become Central and Eastern European hub. Its catchment area would be greater in the west, which could improve its competitiveness in relation to foreign hubs. Also locating it further away from Warsaw Chopin Airport would reduce nuisance for the residents of the Warsaw agglomeration and eliminate possible restrictions on development.
FO RM
The inspiration for the form of the roof was silhouette of a bird with outstretched wings. The roof rises and falls from northwestern to southeastern end, and the edges of the front elevation are curved upwards. A recurring theme in the architecture design of the building is a simplified geometrical shape of the wing to the form of diamond. Based on steel structure, “double skin” is made of aluminium and covered with glass skylights transmitting sunlight to the interior thus creating interesting lighting effects.
FU NC TIO N
Passengers enter the terminal from the northwest. The entrances to the building are possible at the level of the arrivals hall (level 1) and at the level of the check-in hall (level 3). Ground floor is primarily a technical and supporting floor, level 1 includes the arrivals hall, transfer centers, baggage claim hall, on level 2 there are the departure hall, offices, port workers, hotel, conference centre, and on level 3 there are main entrances, check-in counters, restaurants, cafes, lounges, security checks. Two parallel runways, each with a length of 4000 meters and a width of 60 meters are distant from each other by 2200 meters. The direction of the runways of 310 degrees, that is, a northwest direction, result from the directions of runways on Warsaw Chopin Airport (WAW).

The location of the building has been defined by neighbouring buildings and Rogatka Wolska building being a part of the plot. As the building of Rogatka is slightly rotated, its axis has been marked by implementing glass wall of newly designed building on its extension with supporting columns of bigger diameter. Cantilevered construction has been shaped in order to align to buildings running along the Avenue of A. Mickiewicz. It created comfortable and vast sidewalk on the ground floor plan and also shaded entrance area. In front of the building from Marshal Jozef Pilsudski has been created a new city square.
ELEMENTS
OF
S U S TA I N A B L E ARCHITECTURE CCF FAC ADE
Facades to the office areas require the highest comfort criteria in relation to heat loss, daylight, glare control and solar gain. To achieve that facades are designed in the double-skin system – façade CCF (Closed Cavity Façade). Here, the facade is supplemented with an internal layer of doubleglazing, forming a cavity, which incorporates the structural frame. This solution reduces significantly consumption and maintenance costs.

PROPOSAL
The new vision of Grzegorzki District aims to make “green spine” running into main square connecting riverfront and streets leading to Grzegórzecka street. The square is accented with residential buildings with services in the ground floor, which also give its shape and distribute streets and paths axes, mainly to the riverfront. On the east side of the district there has been designed primarily residential building with close access to services such as kindergarten, recreation ares, shops. Here is located also transfer point “SKM”. Blocks create semi-private areas rich in greenery, walking paths, also the buildings have their own underground parking areas. Those blocks, which are situated in the first line of riverfront of the Vistula River are lower than those behind them to allow air movements in the district and also view from upper floors of building behind them. Buildings in the west are cantilevered over Kurlandzki Boulevard with the services on the ground floors. Block next to the main square offers 60 apartments, which are designed so that their living area received as much light as possible and also the view on riverfront. There is also underground parking area, stocked with 120 parking places.

REFURBISHMENT OF OLD UNIVERSITY BUILDING
Building, which is the theme of the project, is a historical building belonging to the Cracow Faculty of Architecture and is situated in Cracow Old Town and houses Institute of History of Architecture and Monument Preservation. The proposal is about extension, reconstruction and adaptation of the building. The discovery of the gallery on the ground floor is designed to enlarge the interior, as well as give you the opportunity to add new features such as toilets and place for students. Once beautiful arcade gallery, now forgotten and hidden in existing walls. Restoration of the gallery, in its original version is particularly important, because of its historical value - is the second oldest gallery in Poland (after Wawel). Arranging reconstructed columns with modern elements (glass panels) creates original composition and enriches the interior. Terrace on the first floor enables view of the Wawel Castle. Courtyard has been complemented with low trees, seats and piled white pebbles. Among them are designed flat skylights illuminating the auditorium designed at -1 level with natural light, as well as the possibility of natural ventilation. Auditorium is located in the immediate vicinity of the oldest parts of the building, which consists of the early phase of the Middle Ages, Gothic and early the Early Renaissance . The construction of these parts is emphasised by light, and in some areas protected by the glass.

The area intented for aircraft factory suggests involuntarily arrangement of the basic functions of the building, including the entrance area, which would be situated on the south side, while the production area on the back side located adjacent to the old runway. The building is defined not only by the location, but the important part is the function. Shapes here are personalized with speed. The glass roof enhances the impression of lightness and blurres the boundaries of the interior. Natural light enters through a huge glazing as well as less intrusive, indirectly through the narrow apertures. The construction fits to the idea assumption - the factory as a symbol of industrialization, new technology, and therefore glass and steel.

The main idea of the project is a connection of open and private spaces. Open part consists of the hall, living room and kitchen and led to the vast terrace with the panoramic view of Warsaw.
Private part - studio, bathroom, dressing room are characterized by colder, more monochromatic colors. Existing wall between the studio and the living room was pierced and inserted steel frames for construction purposes (ceiling support) and functional (the library accessible from both rooms). This procedure is also to remind a person working in the studio of the ongoing family life. Studio room is accessible through the revolving door that after closing become invisible and merge with the adjacent wall. Area between open and private space has assigned inner triangle as the bathroom, which is beheaded in the corner, where is introduced one-way mirror. Here, chromatic and raw colors are confronted with warm wood of clear natural grain.

Rondo Mogilskie is one of the most important communication and transfer points in Cracow. It is a dynamic place, which seems to live constantly with its own life. Just as in the interior of the roundabout, where present times mix with history, the concept of building is based on the same idea - dialogue of new with the old. Shape of the building emphasizes the moving environment. Gray wood planks appear in the hall, and the glass wall is a thin border between inside and outside. On the other hand, it reflects the surrounding architecture. The dynamics is moved to the inside by comparing old and modern materials. Huge black marble tile depict foaming wave of water, which seems to be stuck in traffic. This is dictated by the desire to intensify the impression of the dynamics.
