MORERNISM IN THE CITY 01

ADAPTATION PROGRAMME OF "CEZAS" BUILDING IN SZCZECIN INTO A BRANCH OF THE MUNICIPAL PUBLIC LIBRARY

Masters Thesis, cunducted under the supervision of PhD. Eng. Arch. Jarosław Bondar, is an entirely independent and original project focused on the comprehensive modernization of a municipallyowned building. The thesis also addresses the challenges posed by the lack of a cohesive management policy for facilities of this type.

The library is one of many urban spaces serving public functions. It reflects its surroundings, embodying the character of its location. As a social institution, it organizes leisure time for local residents and encourages communal discovery of talents. Even in ancient times, libraries served multiple purposes: not only in managing collected works but also as research and educational centers, places for relaxation and rest, discussion, philosophical development, and even small botanical gardens.

In modern world, there is a alwaysneed for institutions that efficiently organize the flow of information. The project I have developed responds to this need by representing the local community and meeting its cultural, educational, and social needs in a way that embodies a welcoming Municipal Public Library.Theselected site is a building from 1969, designed by architect Marian Rąbek, a member of the Szczecin branch of SARP and a graduate of theFaculty ofArchitecture at the Szczecin School of Engineering (1954). Rąbek was the author of several notable modernist structures, including thepavilionfortheformerCentralSchoolSupply "CEZAS," the Regional Sports House (now SDS),andtheCopernicanHallattheclinicalhospitalinPomorzany.

SITE PLAN

Through communication analysis, we can seethat"CEZAS"isverywellconnectedto the rest of the city. Modernist buildings often engage with the urban structure as open spaces, incorporating areas for parkingandpedestrianpathways.

Additionally, the building’s central location brings numerous transportation benefits. There are multiple public transit options, including trams and buses, allowing for quick access from nearly any point in the city without the need for a car. Major roadways facilitate easy car access and provide nearby parking options.

Efficient connectivity is fundamental to defining a space well. For an institution like a public library, this accessibility is a strategic advantage and should be fully utilized.

Every city, beyond its built structure, possessesauniquenetworkoffunctional areas. Through functional analysis, we can identify subtle relationships between the needs of each area. This analysis allows us to focus on the tendency to concentrate residential functions and their public and commercial requirements.

"CEZAS"marksthebeginningofthecity’s primary commercial avenue, making it strategically significant for introducing new functions and adapting existing buildings to accommodate evolving interrelationships. Furthermore, its location plays a crucial role in supporting the needs of the surrounding residential areas. Thus, adapting the current structure to serve a new purpose will positivelyimpactthedevelopmentofthis partofthecity.

As we know, differences in building heights are often dictated by the technological capabilities and design styles of specific eras. Structures of closely adjoining urban tenements tend to share a similar, averaged midpoint in height. Their refined character often reveals beautifully composed facades, focusing on a cohesive streetscape ratherthanindividualbuildings. Modernist buildings, by contrast, differ significantly in their design approach. The variety and differences enabled by technological advancements allow for more open layouts, providing better exposure and visibility of individual structures in relation to their surroundings. To fully appreciate the unique relationship between a building and its environment, an appropriate amount of space is needed—and "CEZAS"iswell-suitedforthispurpose.

Historical Analysis: In the western part ofthedistrict,pre-warbuildingscanstill be observed, while the eastern part is primarily filled with post-World War II structures built to replace areas destroyed by wartime actions. These areas have been almost entirely developed with modernist architecture, giving this part of the city a distinct character. The open, spacious layout provides a modern look and allows for flexible reconfiguration of public spaces, an essential feature often referred to as the "foreground" of modernistarchitecture.

"CEZAS"issituatedattheheartofthese developments, established during the initial post-war phase of urban growth. Unfortunately, buildings constructed under the challenging economic conditions of the 1960s and 1970s are now among the first to require modernization.

"CEZAS" is one of Szczecin’s significant post-war architectural achievements. Despite limited funding, these buildings often matched Western European trends and, through thoughtful design solutions, were frequently more interesting than international counterparts.Designedasasinglestorypavilion,"CEZAS"islocatedat the intersection of Rayskiego and Wyzwoleniastreets.Overtheyears, it underwent numerous modifications; originally, a modernistpergolaadorneditsfront, though it no longer exists today. Inside, unique architectural elements add great value to the space, includingtheglazedsouthern façadewithitsminimaliststaircase and interesting stairway structure, aswellasthefrontfaçadefeaturing a concrete cuboid that appears to float in the air. Unfortunately, the harmonyandmodernistaestheticof the building were compromised by renovations in the 1990s and 2007, whichblockedtheopenpassageway at the ground level, added extensions, and removed the "CEZAS"neonsign.

The deteriorating state of modernist architecture is a troubling issue in many European cities. Once admired for their unique elegance, these buildings are now often considered neglected spaces, dysfunctional and uninviting. Frequently used as advertising billboards, theyrepelwiththeirlack of aesthetic appeal. However, after years of neglect, modernism is experiencing a revival in urban spaces, revealing its fresh appeal as its original elegance is restored. Its simplicity and universality make it an excellent foundation for the adaptation and modernization of buildings, giving them a new dimension and purpose. Thistrend is seen across Europe, with residential buildings also undergoing modernizations, from the renovation of a concrete block in Bordeauxto Czech "Paneláky" and Warsaw’s former "Zodiac" building, now the Pavilion ofArchitecture.

"Good design and good architecture emerge when they respect all the conditions and needs of both the existing and planned spaces— sometimesadding the architect's talent." — Architect Kazimierz Ferenc

Thegoalofthisprojectistocreate a branch of the Municipal Public Library that aligns with the needs and possibilities of modern times. The primary priority was to preserve and restore the essential characteristics of post-war modernist architecture, which holdsparticularimportancefor the West Pomeranian region. Additionally, the project considers the possibility of expanding the current structure to enhance itscapacity to serve as a library. A green roof wasidentified as a crucial feature, adding an environmentally conscious dimension to the project. The planningconceptrespectsthesite's surroundings and history, restoring the originalpergola in front of the building to open up the ground floor and encourage seamless movement between the library and its surroundings. At the rear of the building, the basement was opened up to allow more light into the rooms and to encourage foot trafficaroundtheentiresite.

PROGRAM OF A LISTED TENEMENT HOUSE INTO A MUNICIPAL

HOSTEL

Hostel is an affordable temporary accommodation option with standards differing from hotels, mainly in terms of the number of beds per room, the use of bunk beds, and shared amenities and facilities. Hostels are often frequented by students and young travelers from various countries. A characteristic feature of hostels is the option to rent a bed in a shared room.

Rooms in hostels are typically dormitories, which are multi-bed shared rooms. Such rooms generally accommodate 6–12 beds and can be mixed-gender, male-only, or female-only. In some countries, the distinction between male and female dorms may not always be strictly maintained.

Hostels also offer private rooms for 1, 2, or 3 people. The price for a private room increases if it includes an ensuite bathroom. Otherwise, shared bathrooms are available close to the rooms. Despite these options, hostel prices remain lower than hotel prices.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

The project involves adapting the ground floor and first floor of a tenement building located at 52 Jagiellońska Street. One of the primary advantages of tenement buildings is their high ceilings. However, their interiors often pose usability challenges due to narrow wall spacing.

The main idea of the project was to achieve maximum spaciousness and ensure a barrier-free architectural design. The layout is divided into two main zones: a daytime/public zone on the ground floor and a nighttime/private zone on the upper floor.

In revitalizing tenement buildings in Szczecin’s city center, restoring their historical character and recreating majestic facades is crucial. This includes elements like woodwork, balconies, balustrades, and details such as cornices, which historically created a tasteful aesthetic. The chosen color palette, featuring beige and gray tones, gives the place a sense of dignity and elegance.

The materials used for finishing and decorating the interiors reflect an eclectic style, commonly used in Szczecin’s tenement buildings. However, the goal was also to create interiors with an industrial-oriental character. This is achieved through the use of raw brick elements and richly decorated oriental accents, such as large chandeliers suspended in the reception area mezzanine.

The design also ensures accessibility for external visitors by incorporating a restaurant open to both hostel guests and the general public.

FUNCTIONAL LAYOUT

The ground floor includes service areas for the hostel as well as shared spaces for general use.

Guest rooms are located on the first floor, along with facilities for guest services, including hygiene and sanitation areas and shared kitchens.

Accessibility for people with disabilities is ensured on both the ground and first floors, with each room being fully accessible. An elevator has also been included in the design to enhance accessibility.
