water the music of architecture What is that “sublime“ moment that happens when you are listening to a live orchestra and get moved by it made of? Are we, as architects capable of achieving a similar event like by the use of architectural elements alone? I believe the answer is yes. There is more to the moment than just the music itself, and that a “sublime” moment can be experienced in many contexts. There are elements that are common to this experience, primarily the presence of the Four Classical Elements. With this in mind, I came to the idea that by including Air, Fire, Earth and Water into my project, then I would be a step closer to having the users go through a sublime experience.

b o a t house Aplace where mind and body are exercise simultaneously involves a design that touches our senses. This building, that works as both a storage and a club house, has to not only fulfill all the practical needs of its users but because of its location in Georgetown also needs to include a way to bring public participation to the dynamics of rowing and water sports.

interior renovation for IDB headquarters Board Room The renovation of the main Board Room at the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) in Washington, DC included a custom designed conference table to accommodate a maximum of 23 participants, and personal consoles for approximately 100 additional participants. In addition, skylight-like light fixtures were introduced, capable of tracking the outdoors light levels during the day and changing intensity accordingly, in order to provide a sense of connection to the outdoors for this interior room.

icon verticality
An iconic figure of DC, the Washington Monument is re-grounded as a clear focal point along the National Mall. The cut in the earth enhances the verticality while providing space for the service facilities and freeing the surrounding landscape from visual obstacles. The new entrance offers visitors a new perspective of the monument and the south side retaining wall offers additional space for educational content of the history of George Washington.

entrance steps plaza The new entrance plaza is created by cutting into the earth along the East/West axis of the monument. With a slight sloping path towards the main entrance, visitors can experience the verticality of the monument. Referencing the shadow angle, diagonal steps (parallel to the shadow) create a public space for sitting and gathering. View facing East from the monument entrance toward the US Capitol.
