SPREAD

This project originated from an understanding of the severe environmental impact Melbourne’s urban sprawl has created and the need to transit into a more compact city. Understanding that the foundation issue is cultural, based on the Australian Dream, this proposal seeks to build a strategic design process that is a catalyser for mindset change.

COMMUNITY-ORIENTED CITY: varied housing stock with communal areas, quality green spaces and community infrastructure, and local offer of employment, bringing ecology to the foreground.

Prinzessinnengärten is a site of cultural, social, political and ecological significance that has consolidated a communityoriented space. Acknowledging that it is under severe threat of gentrification forces within the neighbourhood, this proposal aims to maintain and enhance the site’s core character by providing a new economic approach. Establishing a Sustainable and Educational program opens pathways towards sustainability-oriented grants, in the broad context of the Climate Emergency, which would assist in the implementation of a system that builds resilience towards gentrification pressures. Additionally, the enhancement of the urban ecology and the improvement of inclusive social spaces will provide benefits for public health and the environment itself.

DIGHTS FALLS THE STONE PIT DIALOGUES WITH THE MATERIALITY OF THE SITE AND SEASONS. BUILT WITH LOCAL BASALT AND SANDSTONE ROCKS, SOME LEVELS MIGHT BE FLOODED SOMETIMES, BRINGING USERS TO A CLOSER UNDERSTANDING OF THE EVER-CHANGING NATURAL PROCESSES.

THE THREE OVERLAPPED PATHWAYS ARE SHAPED AS THE YARRA RIVER ACROSS TIME. EACH YEAR STANDS FOR A MOMENT WHEN THE RIVER SUFFERED ITS COURSE ALTERATION.

Program : Public Park | Academic Date of Project : 2018 Location : Abbotsford, Melbourne

BRIEF • Overall the design’s ambition is to engage the community with the site, through ecological, social and cultural elements, fostering educational and leisure activities at the same time as promoting ecological benefits and biodiversity enhancement. • The Wander across the Seasons is a way of addressing the creation of a resilient and adaptive landscape, developing designed elements that function in different weather conditions and support a year-round utilization of the site. • The shelter embraces a community garden determined to be planted with edible indigenous species from the area, bringing part of the Wurundjeri knowledge to a contemporary use. The community garden’s main goal is to provide urban agriculture coupled up with a social/cultural perspective.
