THE HISTORY OF EYELASH AND EYEBROW STYLES FROM ANCIENT TO THE PRESENT

THE HISTORY OF EYELASH AND EYEBROW STYLES

First impressions count. Whether you will be perceived as pleasant and trustworthy is decided in a fracture of a second. Since enhanced and open eyes make you look warmer and more approachable, it is no surprise that eye make-up has been a popular tool throughout history. ANCIENT TIMES As early as in Ancient Egypt, both men and women started emphasising their eyes through dyeing eyebrows, blackening lashes, tinting eyelids green and giving the eyes an almond form. It was believed that this way one could recreate the image of Re, the sun god and that make-up would keep evil spirits away and protect from several illnesses. Men generally styled their eyelashes more than women, even children got their eyelashes smeared at the time of birth to strengthen their eyesight and protect from evil spirits. Eye make-up was an everyday companion, worn by people of the upper as well as the lower classes. In ancient Greece, body care was also very important. Creams and oils kept the skin supple. A pale complexion, elaborate hair styles and enhanced lips were in fashion. Women emphasised their eyes with kohl and blackened their eyelids with incense. Natural and unibrows were considered beautiful. To achieve that look, some used black paint, others even applied fake eyebrows made out of oxen hair. „A woman without paint is like food without salt.“ Roman philosopher Plautus (254-184 BC) wrote. In Ancient Rome long, thick and curly eyelashes were considered beautiful. To achieve that look, women used burnt cork to thicken eyelashes and kohl for darkening eyelashes and eyelids. When the Romans conquered Egypt, the Egyptian way of tinting eyes green became fashionable in the Roman Empire as well. Monobrows were still in fashion which led to women often extending their brows inwards using soot.

THE HISTORY OF EYELASH AND EYEBROW STYLES

MIDDLE-AGES During the middle-ages hygiene standards in Europe were poor, make-up declared a sin by the church and therefore only worn by prostitutes. It was believed that a natural look was more pleasant for God. Still, people, especially from the upper class, found a way to live up to the beauty standards of their time. Since a high forehead was considered the most important feature in women’s faces, women would depilate hair in that area and pluck their eyebrows heavily. Eyelashes were not styled, sometimes even removed. A pale complexion was considered noble. RENAISSANCE & MODERN TIMES During the Renaissance people began discovering antique cultures. Body care and make-up slowly but steadily returned. A style icon during early modern times was Queen Elizabeth I. Her complexion was very pale, her hair reddish. Many women tried to achieve her look. Some dyed their hair in her colour or used reddish wigs or hairpieces and tinted eyelashes and eyebrows in the same colour. Dangerous dyes were used; for example a mixture of rhubarb juice and oil of vitriol. Vitriol is pure sulfuric acid. These tinctures frequently caused hair loss or damages in the scalp. Also, ways to darken eyelashes secretly were found. Crushed berries or soot obtained from fireplaces did the trick.

In the 18th century a pale complexion and dark brows were fashionable. Eyelashes and eyebrows were darkened; sometimes false brows made out of mouse fur were used. With the industrial revolution, mass production of cosmetic products became possible but still most people used home methods, like ashes or lamp black mixed with elderberry juice. During the 19th century make-up was considered vulgar and only worn openly by actresses and prostitutes. Common women sneaked into beauty salons via backdoors and make-up was often sold under the counter. When it came to styling the eyes, women found ways to emphasise them secretly: castor oil was massaged into the lashes and to achieve bright eyes, a drop of lemon juice was put into each eye. Brows were left rather bushy and untamed. During that period, the production of cosmetics changed profoundly. New methods of manufacture, safer chemicals and natural ingredients were incorporated. Still, the first mascara as we know it today wasn’t invented until 1914. The name “mascara” was created in 1933, until then it was called “eyelash darkener”.

Empress Elisabeth of Austria was famous for her cult of beauty. She used hardly any cosmetics, but invested hours in styling her long, voluminous hair and in caring for her complexion and her figure.

THE HISTORY OF EYELASH AND EYEBROW STYLES

20 CENTURY THE ERA OF STYLE ICONS TH

For the first time, modern cosmetic products were available for a majority of the population and quickly became very popular. Styling eyelashes and eyebrows became a key factor for achieving the perfect look. It was during the 1920ies that people for the first time got inspiration for their styles from entertainers. The biggest impact had the stars of Hollywood’s silent movies. Case in point: Fake eyelashes. They became very popular because of the movie „Intolerance“ in 1916. The director wished an effect of fluttering eyes for his actress and used fake lashes. Soon they were to be seen in other Hollywood productions and became popular with women in general. Another look that caught on inspired by the stars of silent movies was wearing eyebrows thin and straight. To add shine, emphasise and groom them, Vaseline was used. In 1930 Josef Gschwentner opened his hair salon in Austria. During the 30ies and 40ies more and more women included mascara and earthy eye shades to their daily routine and the eyelash curler was invented. They were made of stainless steel, not very expensive and very popular. Besides, women of the 1930ies and 40ies would still wear dark, shiny and severely tweezed brows. The only difference to the 1920ies brows was, that now they were plucked into dramatic high, rounded arches, which sometimes extended all the way to the temple. The beauty icon of this time was Lucille Ball. The Lucille Brow: She kept her eyebrows thin and round. That way

her face appeared rounder, her features were softened and her eyes emphasised. In the 1950ies the cosmetics industry grew rapidly and RefectoCil was born. In the USA a glamorous style was demanded. It was all about elegance and femininity. Eyes that appeared big and innocent were fashionable. There were many beauty icons like Grace Kelly, Marilyn Monroe and of course Audrey Hepburn. The Audrey Brow: What made her look iconic was the contrast between her straight and thick brows which gave her a confident, serious almost manly impression and her innocent and large appearing eyes. Also, while stars like Marilyn Monroe emphasised their femininity and curvy bodies, she wore straight cut clothes, trouser suits and had a very slender figure. Her most famous look was the elegant black dress she wore in „Breakfast at Tiffany’s“. During the 60ies a doll-like look, big eyes and long lashes, was trendy. Artificial lashes made with human hair or synthetic materials were high in demand. The Italian actress Sophia Loren symbolized that style. Her eyes were greatly emphasised and appeared round and big. The Sophia Brow: Because her natural eyebrow curve was too close to the eyes and made her look permanently sad, she shaved her eyebrows off entirely, and pencilled them back in using super-short, precise strokes. The result was curved and thick eyebrows that secured a bold, yet seemingly natural look.

THE HISTORY OF EYELASH AND EYEBROW STYLES

In the 1970ies women’s liberation changed make-up needs. Advertising now concentrated on wordings like “natural” and “barely visible”. Parallel to that, colourful trends and 1920 retro style emerged. There were three main eye looks: natural and barely there, soft and smoky, bold and garish. Popular colours were blues, greens and purples as well as earthy tones. Two main brow styles were favoured during this time: Thicker, more natural brows and thinner, more pronounced arches. A 70ies style icon clearly is Cher. The Cher Brow: It was plucked into an arch and gave her a gentle and feminine look. In the 1980ies eyeliner around the eye and thick, heavy brows were in fashion. Usually they were grown-out, groomed and pencilled in. The Brooke Brow: It is typically 80ies. Her brows were kept natural and thick and let her appear decisive and self-confident. During the 1990ies it was all about glamour. Eyes were contoured smoky most often in neutral brown, beige, black and eggplant finished off with a clean liner. Eyebrows were tweezed heavily and superthin. Drew Barrymore’s brows were styled typically for this decade. The Drew Brow: Her eyebrows were thin and plucked into a tiny arch letting her face appear round.

From the year 2000 until 2016 the trend went from thin and curved brows to thick, lush looks and natural arches. 2015/16 – THE YEARS OF BUSHY BROWS Thin brows are declared a phenomenon of the past, thick and natural brows are the way to go. To not only get them into the desired form but also achieve a look that matches personality and hair colour, eyebrows are styled with pencils and powders or simply tinted. Also in style are bleached brows which are to be seen on the runways of almost every fashion show. 2015/2016’s brow style icon clearly is Cara Delevingne. The Cara Brow: Her dark, natural and thick brows give her an iconic look and let her appear decisive and serious. Beauty ideals and icons may have changed over the years but the importance ascribed to styling the eye-area has not. Eyelashes and eyebrows have always been a key factor when it comes to creating the perfect look. RefectoCil has been a market leader in the segment of eyelash and eyebrow tints since 1930. We have optimized and extended our product line constantly to meet the needs of our customers. Today we offer a variety of products, which ensure beautiful and accentuated eyes nonstop around the clock for as long as six weeks. EYELASH PERM

APPLICATION Clean the eye-area

First clean the lashes with RefectoCil eye make-up remover. Then use RefectoCil Saline solution to make sure, residues are eliminated. Only if the eye area is cleaned of residues, optimal adhesion of the eyelash roller can be guaranteed.

Select the eyelash roller

the shorter the lashes and the more curl the customer desires, the smaller the roller you select!

You have selected the correct roller size when the eyelashes cover half of the roller circumference.

If the chosen roller is too small and the eyelashes too long the result will be a U-shaped curvature.

If the chosen roller is too large and the eyelashes too short the result is no curl or a weak curvature.

EYELASH PERM

Apply roller • • • • •

Roller is self-adhesive Only touch the sides of the roller By bending the roller several times the eyelash roller will adopt a form corresponding to the lid curvature The eyelash roller is too long? Trim it with scissors! Gently stretch the eye lid with your fingers, first apply the eyelash roller at the inner lid edge – just above the base of eyelash

Fixing lashes • •

With an upwards move press the eyelashes evenly and straight onto the roller using the application stick. For stubborn eyelashes or those that have come off, apply a small amount of RefectoCil Glue to the eyelash roller and affix the eyelashes again.

Removing roller • •

Touch the eyelash roller several times with a moist cotton pad. The moisture slowly loosens the glue Gently stretch the eyelid and roll the eyelash roller downward.

After perming, tint the eyelashes with RefectoCil eyelash and eyebrow tints. The hair shaft is still open, therefore the application time is just 2 minutes! Tinted lashes will make the effect of the perm even more visible.

Attention: Products are number coded on the tubes, cosmetic brushes and cosmetic dishes with No 1 and 2! Tips & tricks: •

Your client can not imagine the result of a eyebrow tinting treatment? With the help of a cream eyebrow pencil or powder-eye shadow, you can easily simulate the effect of a tinting treatment. Just dab on a bit of desired colour, the effect will be convincing.

What is the best and easiest way to integrate the tinting-process in your daily routine? Choose a time slot when you are not busy doing something for the client – when you are waiting for the hair colour to work or during a manicure or pedicure or a face mask.

Here are some good ways to raise your client’s interest for tinting eyebrows and eyelashes without asking drectly: Stress the fact that the colour profile can be complemented best by the right eyebrow tint, to suit skin and hair tone. Ask when the client’s last eyebrow and eyelash tint was. Point out your own eyebrow and eyelashes tint! Complement on the new hair colour and make aware, that the effect of eyelash and eyebrow tinting treatment would enhance the result. Try to sell an eyelash-and eyebrow tinting treatment as part of a facial treatment.

THE THEORY OF COLOURS

HISTORY, FACTS AND TODAYS’ TRENDS Colours play an important role in every aspect of life. As early as at the start of the 19th century, many extraordinary personalities like Philipp Runge, Goethe, Newton or Schopenhauer started dealing with the theory of colour in various fields like physics, chemistry, psychology or art. “Keep it simple”, following this principle, Johannes Itten, an art educator, established the twelve-part circle of colours in 1961. Thanks to his clear and simple presentation, it is still well-known and the standard for printing inks today. His theory also served as basis for categorising colour types. One of his students, Carole Jackson, wrote the bestseller “Color me beautiful” during the 1980ies and became the founder of the 4-seasons-colour-theory. This theory plays a major role when it comes to finding the optimum colour style for each skin type. The appearance of our skin colour is affected by the colours surrounding us. This is why, the colour of our clothes, hair, make-up and eyebrows determine our look and how we are perceived by other people.

THE THEORY OF COLOURS

THE THEORY OF COLOURS

Choose a colour – set a statement Over the course of time, beauty ideals changed. For many years, a harmonious overall look was the absolute goal. Today, any style is possible. There are women trying to emphasise their features and look as natural as possible whilst others try to provoke deliberately with extraordinary looks. Finding the perfect style became a question of knowing who we are and what we want. The choice of colour – hair, clothes, eyebrows – already determines our look. Therefore it is important to know which colour can have which optical effect in order to avoid setting the wrong statement involuntarily. Below you find some tips, which will help you to use the theory of colour to your advantage.

THE THEORY OF COLOURS

The effect of colours on our look People tend to automatically choose the colours that suit them best. Nevertheless fashion trends sometimes let people decide for colours that are not ideal for their type. Clothes, hair and eyebrow colour can be chosen whereas our skin type is a given. Therefore we always have to take it into accordance. Colours lying next to each other always have a reciprocal effect. The explanation for that effect can be traced back to Johannes Itten and Carole Jackson. According to their theories, there are colour contrasts that explain the effect colour choices can have on our appearance. Two of them are especially relevant in this particular context: the successive contrast and the simultaneous contrast.

Successive contrast: If you are looking at a colour

field for a longer time, the eye automatically builds the complementary colour. Meaning, if your skin type is rather cool and you wear for example an orange pullover, the eye automatically builds the contrast colour, in this case blue. Therefore the skin will appear even paler and more bluish.

Of course, the phenomenon of the successive contrast also applies to warm skin types.

Simultaneous contrast: It deals with the perception of

a field of colour depending on its background as well as on colours that may lie next to it.

THE THEORY OF COLOURS

Why does our skin appear rosy or shimmer golden? The composition of our skin-colour consists mainly of 3 pigments: melanin, haemoglobin and carotene. The melanin share is embedded in our genes. Since it is also serving as protection against UV radiation, its share depends on where we and our parents were born. Melanin is responsible for the colour depth of the skin (light or dark) as well as for the colour of eyes and hair. Haemoglobin, the red blood pigment, is responsible for the cool or blue cast part of our skin type. If the blood circulation is good and the skin thick, it appears rosy. If the skin is thin, it will lead to blood shining through which lets the skin appear bluish. Carotene is responsible for the warm colour shades of the skin. It is absorbed by the body via food intake.

Tips: There are a few things to consider when selecting your colours: • Consider the successive and the simultaneous contrast. • Eyebrows and hair have a similar effect - they define your face. • The skin type (warm or cool) has always to be taken into accordance when it comes to styling the eye-area, choosing a new hair colour or clothes. • If the right colours are worn, the skin appears young, healthy and fresh. • A harmonious look is not automatically the look best suited. • You can emphasise your type perfectly if you consider skin type, character and individual style. • There may be new colour trends each season, but if you want to look your best, you have to find out what suits YOU best. If you want to know your colour type, it is best to have it analysed by a professional. This way you make sure, the analysis is objective and leads to the best results.

THE THEORY OF COLOURS

The Effect of Colours

Choose the look you prefer and select the colour accordingly. If you strive for a rather dominant look, go with a dark shade for your eyebrows. If you desire a gentle and feminine appearance, choose bright colours. You desire an optical distinction between spare time and work-life? Just change colours to switch between a lovely and sweet look for weekends and a decisive, self-conscious look for being at work.

ANGELINA JOLIE Whether she is a vamp like at the oscars, a lovely mother and UNCHR special envoy the eyebrows reflect her current task.

CHARLIZE THERON Her motto is “stay true to yourself”! For one movie she had to dye her hair black. TO keep her look lovely and sweet, she accentuated her brows in a lighter shade.

The effect: Light colours: they make the face look soft, young, fresh, open, round, delicate and less wrinkled. Dark colours: they let your face appear square, masculine, strict, straight-forward and wrinkles are easier to be seen.

RESUMEE: In todays’ society we have many different beauty ideals. Any style is possible, whether you like it harmonious and classy or rebellious and unconventional. Individuality and creativity are the two key factors. Find out which style suits you best and which one you like best. Just be yourself and create a style as unique as your personality.

One simple fact that will help you to optimise your style easily: While light colours come to the foreground, dark colours recede to the background. For example, if you have deep-set eyes, your brows have to be darker, to place emphasis on the eyes. On the contrary, if you want the brow to catch the eye, it should be dyed in a light colour.

BROW SHAPES C R E AT E YO U R W O W B R O W

BROW SHAPES

The WOW brow Eyebrows are a tool that determine your look and can be used to optimise the face form. With choosing the right eyebrow form, you can make each of the 5 main face shapes look their best. Though there are many different styling options, there is one rule that applies to each of them: You should always aim to form the brow 2/3 rising and 1/3 falling. Regardless face shape or style, this form opens the eye and lets you appear warmer and more approachable. In todays’ society we have many different beauty ideals. Any style is possible, whether you like it harmonious and classy or rebellious and unconventional. Individuality and creativity are the two key factors. Find out which style suits you best and which one you like best. Just be yourself and create a style as unique as your personality.

E Y EB ROWS S H A PE FACES

1. Determine where your inner brow should end. Place a pen or a ruler by the outermost corner of your nose and have it point upwards to the innermost corner of your eye.

Basic Level Brow Styling Find the ideal form A total look needs brows that match the face. Three simple steps will help you to find out where the inner and outer brow should end and where the highest peak should be: Tip: The ideal gap between eyebrows is the size of one of the eyes.

2. Determine where your arch should peak. With the pen still resting against your nose, move it until it extends past the outermost edge of your pupil while you are looking straight ahead. Where the pen crosses the eyebrow should be the peak.

3. Determine where your outer brow should end. Move the pen (still resting against the nose) to the outermost corner of your eye. That is where the eyebrow ends.

Individual brow forms Each face is shaped differently - each brow should be shaped accordingly. When it comes to styling the eyebrows, individual needs have to be seen and met. Similar to a haircut, eyebrows need to match a person’s face and personality. Therefore you shouldn’t IDEAL just follow brow trends. If your customers‘ eye distance is ideal, the brows Work with what you have will need to start beyond the and what suits the face inner eye corner. shape best. WIDE If the eyes are set wide apart, the brows will need to start more in the middle to optically reduce the distance. NARROW If the eye distance is too close, the brows will need to start more outside to optically add some distance.

E Y EB ROWS S H A PE FACES

Oval: The oval face form is ideal, therefore the form of the brow can be chosen individually.

Trapeze: First priority is to soften the broad chin. A thick, flat and elongated brow is the way to go. It takes focus away from the chin to the eye-area.

Circle: You can optically prolong the face and let the round form appear more angular, if the eyebrow is plucked into a high arch.

Square: You can soften the contours and prolong the face by plucking the brow into a high curve.

E Y EB ROWS S H A PE FACES

Brow Shaping – Frame your (client’s) beauty Become a lash and brow consultant and help your client achieve a stunning look from head to toe. Eyebrows are a number one styling factor. They frame faces, give them structure and illuminate the eyes, thus opening them and making them appear brighter. Eyebrows convey our emotions. Depending on their form, they change how we are perceived. No wonder, accentuated brows and lashes are topic number one not only on catwalks but also in social media channels like Instagram, YouTube and Facebook. Numerous tutorials show people trying to find the perfect eyebrow shape. Meet that need and help people accentuate their beauty. We have some tips for you that will support you in creating the style that will make your clients look their best. Eyebrows are sisters not twins Contrary to common belief, it is not necessary that eyebrows look exactly the same. Most faces aren’t completely symmetrical. Therefore eyebrows don’t have to be identical. They are just supposed to resemble each other strongly. Rectangular: In this case, it is important to shorten the face form. If you pluck the eyebrow flat but elongated, the face appears broader and shortened.

Triangle: A short and soft eyebrow form shifts the focus away from the pointy chin. If you pluck the eyebrow into a high arch, you can conceal the distinctive part.

BLEACH BROWS BLONDE BROW

BREATHTAKING BLONDE! BLONDE BROW

BLONDE BROW

The effect Blonde Brow is a unique product, specifically designed to create a variety of bright hues and to enhance any blonde style in a breathtaking way.

The product RefectoCil Blonde Brow is especially suited for the sensitive facial skin and can therefore be used on the brows without concern. It causes less reddishness than normal bleaching products and ensures natural results. Additional information that probably goes without saying but is worth mentioning anyway: do not use common hair bleaching products on eyebrows. The eye-area is more sensitive and needs especially suited products.

Not only during the fashion weeks but basically on every runway during the past months, bleached brows are absolutely in style. The very bright, almost white eyebrows let the face lose its contours and therefore create anunconventional look. To make it an every-day style and still make a fashion statement, just let the bleaching work-in for a shorter period of time. This way, the brow doesn’t lose all of its contour.

The purpose of trainings Trainings offer numerous opportunities. For one, you can spread your message, support new product launches and reach new customers. Besides it is a great possibility to bond with already existing customers and create trust in the product by answering questions and by solving problems participants might experience. Thanks to the personal conversation – either face to face or headset to headset - you can create an environment of support, connect to the users and give them a feeling of appreciation. This way, you can establish a relationship and become their number one partner, clearly set apart from competitors.

Key factors for a good training

To make your training a success, we have an exemplary run of the event for you, plus some additional tips below:

Procedure

• Lead the participants in with a 20 minute introduction of the RefectoCil world and the beauty and importance of eyes. • Inform them about the 4 module concept of RefectoCil which you find explained below. • Start a live demonstration while simultaneously explaining all the steps. • Next, let them work in pairs and practice what they have learned. • At the end, finish with a short summary and ask for feedback.

O R G A N I Z AT I O N O F T R A I N I N G S

Additional tips for a successful training 1. KEEP IT SHORT. A maximum of 2.5 hours is advisable. Most likely, participants will maintain their concentration powers during that time. 2. KEEP IT PERSONAL. Limit the number of participants to a maximum of 20 per group. That way you’ll be able to respond to questions individually. 3. KEEP IT PRACTICAL. “Hands-on!” should be the motto of your training. The practical part should take up most of the time for two reasons: a. That way the attention span won’t fade out b. Participants have to practice to gain confidence

c. Module 3 – Bleach the brow (breathtaking blonde) d. Module 4 – Sense & Sensibility (plant based eyelash & eyebrow tinting) 6. KEEP IT OPEN FOR DISCUSSION. The training shouldn’t be a frontal lecture but perceived as an opportunity to initiate a dialogue. Ask and answer questions, hear opinions and connect with your audience.

Material for a successful training • • •

4. KEEP IT VIVID. Functions and theory explained during a live demonstration will help understanding the process. 5. KEEP IT CONCISE. Try to split up the topics. Too much information packed into one session will prevent the desired effect. Our advice on this topic is to create 4 modules. For example: a. Module 1 – The eye-opener (Eyelash Perm) b. Module 2 – Classic & Unconventional Styles (eyelash & eyebrow tinting)

Use a presentation for the training session. Use folders and goodies. Use a training certificate: After the training, hand out a certificate to everyone present. It will leave the participants feeling appreciated and motivated to attend future trainings.

Choose your kind of training There are three effective ways to tutor hairstylists and cosmeticians. Either you teach in the salon, create an event or you perform a webinar. Below you find further information to the three different methods, that will help you choose the one that meets your needs best. SALON TRAINING: Training in the salon is personal and proofed to be very effective since you can reach every person working there at once. Include a live demonstration, printed materials and practical tasks for the participants.

EVENT If you want to reach out to hair stylists and cosmeticians working in different places, but still tutor in person, create an event. It will not only serve as training but also as a great marketing tool since you draw attention to you and the product. All you need to do is, check a room, snacks and drinks and you are good to go. Other than that the training can be followed through according to the same scheme as in the salon.

O R G A N I Z AT I O N O F T R A I N I N G S

WEBINAR Having trouble getting everyone to the same place at the same time? Then a webinar is a great way of working together even over great distances. It is a very good method for introducing new information to people who already know the basics. For first timers a webinar is not the best training method for one simple reason: There can be no practical part and no direct feedback from your side. Therefore teaching people tinting eyelashes and eyebrows or applying the eyelash perm for the first time can become a difficult task. We would advise you to do the first training in person and then follow-up with webinars to refresh or teach about new trends and possibilities. There are a few things you need to check before performing online: • You need to be registered at a platform, for example edudip. • It will cost you a low monthly fee • Webcam • best used with a tripod • Good internet connection • Notebook • Headset for the presenter to prevent reverb • Duration: maximum of 1.5 hours since a practical part is not possible • Send out marketing materials beforehand and afterwards a training certificate for everyone who participated.

TIPS FOR THE PRESENTER: If you are doing an online training for the first time, it can feel weird not to get feedback directly from the group. To prevent the training from becoming a full frontal lecture, patch in participants with a microphone or activate the online chat. This way interaction with the group is possible. Ask questions to involve them. To avoid awkward silences while you are waiting for an answer from the group, tell people you will continue with your program until you get feedback. It is also crucial to read answers or questions from the chat out loud so that everyone feels included.

Whether you choose webinars, events or salon trainings, it will help bonding with your customers and establish partnerships.
