Did You Know? More people are born in September than any other month.
Congratulations to our 2018 Sterling Cup winners! Congratulations to the team at Chancellor Channel on winning the Sterling Cup this year! They returned an economic FCR of 1.104 which is a fantastic result, continuing a trend of lowering FCRs over the last five years. The great work on these fish was started at Dalrymple Hatchery and continued at the Upper Retreat Nursery site. The winning staff from Chancellor are currently in Scotland to observe and learn techniques to bring back to their farming practices.
Dougie Hunter, Production Director said, “Congratulations to the teams at Chancellor Channel, Upper Retreat, and Dalrymple who have worked hard to produce such a good result. Feeding efficiency is at the core of our approach to farming and, having produced one of our best ever bFCRs, the results from the Chancellor team show what can be done when you focus on the details. I hope they enjoyed their visit to Marine Harvest Scotland farms and I look forward to them sharing what they have learned with their colleagues here in BC.”

New filleting machine and software

A new piece of equipment has recently arrived at the Surrey Secondary Processing Plant: the MS2730 Salmon Filleter. The new arrival brings several features that allow increased efficiency. The speed with which it can process the salmon coming from the Port Hardy Processing Plant will go up to over 17 pieces a minute, with the target of increasing it to 20 pieces a minute. It is not just an increase in speed which makes this new addition stand out! The release of a new software package (Innova) will mean that Jason Swanson, SSP Processing Manager, will have the ability to view progress and make on-the-spot adjustments to ensure the best cuts are being made. There are three areas where alterations can be made, each adjusted 2
independently of each other, covering the main fillet, belly trimming, and back trimming. Currently these changes are implemented manually so moving to an automatic process will be of great benefit for the crew. In addition, there is a built-in alarm system which can indicate if a fish is too short, if there is a side-cover open, if an emergency stop button has been pressed and much more. A dashboard (pictured below) is Mr. Swanson’s key to ensuring continued throughput throughout their processing day and the SSP staff can monitor the daily processing progress. MarineHarvest.ca
Jason Swanson commented, “The MS2730 and the new Innova update should be a huge step forward for us. It will allow us to display to our production staff their productivity in real time, and in turn take ownership of the targets we have given them. My team should be proud of where they are now in terms of their development, and I am fully confident that this tool will help them reach their full potential. With the data generated, we will be able to zero in on downtime periods and make better decisions on increasing our overall throughput. This Innova update has not been released officially for the Marel seafood product line, so we are working closely with Marel team to work the wrinkles out and support them in their product development. Pictured are Tojo James (team leader), Michael Donaldson (electrician) and Continued on page 3

Friends and Family Tours
The feed camera systems always impress
Over the course of July and August, Mike Dobbs (Production Manager for the Broughton) and his team in the Broughton region have been giving Marine Harvest employees a chance to share what they do with their friends and families. A series of site tours
The care and attention paid during lice counts was also an eye opener for many
have been run nearly every weekend over the last few months, providing an opportunity to see a site and get an insight into farm life, as well as witness demonstrations of the technologies and practices used. The feedback from those who have attended has been very
positive, with everyone impressed by the attention to detail and care taken by staff as well as the level of technological advancement. Many thanks to Mike and his team for taking the time to share their passion!

Michael has been working at the plant since the final stages of the build and was heavily involved in the commissioning of the equipment. Dougie Hunter – master of the trick shot
Kristi Super and Dean Dobrinsky put their heads together and came up with a plan that gave some of the many keen golfers in Marine Harvest cause to smile. The 9-hole evening golf competition held at Storeys Creek got the attention of nearly 40 MH employees who leapt at the chance enjoy a bit of friendly competition with their colleagues. A two ball better ball format and some careful balancing of the teams made for some close competition and everyone had a great time, with many hoping that the event could become an annual fixture. Thanks to Paul Pattison who was placed in charge of recording the event for posterity and managed to take pictures of most of the groups. To those who were missed, we apologise and can only blame you for playing too quickly for Paul to keep up. Golfers take on Howie Meeker Challenge Marine Harvest was once again a proud sponsor of the Howie Meeker Golf Challenge, raising funds to enable athletes to attend the Special Olympics. Two teams from MH entered the challenge along with the company’s overall sponsorship of the event, one which is close to the hearts of many employees. The event culminated in a fundraising dinner where attendees
were able to hear the experiences of some of the athletes supported by the charity which came together in a heartwarming speech from Howie Meeker himself. The dinner allowed recognition of the golfers’ experiences on the course, with Brett Stricker and Dougie Hunter receiving prizes (Brett for being a part of the overall winning team and Dougie for hitting his drive closest MarineHarvest.ca
to the middle of the fairway). The dinner itself was also an opportunity to win prizes and raise funds. Special mention must also go to Isaac Desprez who donated over half of his winnings in the 50:50 back to the charity. Marine Harvest’s association with this special event and its deserving cause goes on and the hard work of all involved must be recognised!

The Marine Harvest float
Marine Harvest was proud to enter a float into this year’s OrcaFest parade. This year the theme was Around the World and the team behind the float used this as an opportunity to show the global reach of Marine Harvest depicting the locations of all of our operations across the globe.
This was the first year that Marine Harvest has entered the float and it was agreed that this had been a great experience and should definitely be repeated. A big thank you to Pam McDermott and Kathy Baker who organised the float and also to all volunteers who manned it.
Toyota Prius’ cowered as engines roared at the Saratoga Speedway on August 18th. Marine Harvest sponsored the night’s events including Crash to Pass Boat Races, Road Runners, and Hornet Cars. Julio Osario was one of many MH employees who attended the event, commenting that “kids of all ages enjoyed themselves”.
Triumph in Scrap Metal Challenge For the second year in a row, Marine Harvest Canada won the Business Challenge in the Campbell River Hospital Foundation Scrap Metal challenge, donating $2,223 worth of scrap. The Challenge is an annual competition with the aim of raising money while helping clean up scrap metal for a good cause. Since the challenge has begun, over $97,000 has been raised for the purchase of medical equipment for the Campbell River Hospital.

This year, the money raised from this event will be going towards a ‘Hematology Slide Review System’ for the Lab at Campbell River Hospital. This piece of equipment performs automated digital microscopy morphology analysis and has software applications designed for remote access, competency testing, and education. One of the best parts of this system is that it allows the hospital lab the ability to connect with, and support, other sites through digital technology.
