IN THE DRINK – A FAMILY AFFAIR THE ENTIRE PETROSINO FAMILY GETS COMFORTABLE WITH THE BOATING LIFESTYLE. WRITTEN BY SUE RODMAN

S
haron and Neil Petrosino weren’t looking to be boat owners, even though they had both grown up around boats. Then they
moved from New Jersey to the west coast of Florida. After their daughter Annie and son Nick brought up the idea, the couple began to notice the local marinas filled with different types of watercrafts. Eventually they wandered into their local Naples MarineMax store, just to look, and met Bob McIntosh. “We talked to Bob over several months and he really helped us decipher the lifestyle we were looking for,” said Sharon. “He truly listened to our priorities, and got to know us, including the kids. It wasn’t until he understood our family and our goals that he talked about the different types of boats that would fit our situation.” In the end, the Petrosinos settled on a Boston Whaler 230 Vantage, christened In the Drink. Since they had two teenagers who would be driving the boat on their own, safety was a key factor in their decision and the fact that the Boston Whaler is the ‘Unsinkable Legend’ appealed to them. They took full advantage of MarineMax’s unlimited boat training. “We knew our son Nick would be driving the boat quite a bit, often without us,” Sharon began. “We wanted to make sure he was very comfortable driving in the Naples Bay and surrounding area which can be choppy and have a lot of large boat traffic. The MarineMax captain took him out by himself and showed him exactly what to do. It gave us all the confidence we needed.” It wasn’t just Nick that benefited from MarineMax training. When the Petrosinos first brought the boat home, they had difficulty getting the boat on and off their lift, they called Bob for help. “The family lived on a tight canal that would be difficult for an experienced captain to navigate, so we sent our delivery captain to show them some tips and simply help them through repetition until everyone was comfortable,” said McIntosh. Bob was also the go-to when Hurricane Irma was about to slam the west coast of Florida. “That was the first hurricane that I experienced and I was nervous that our marinemax.com

I called Bob and he reassured me that the canal would protect it and he told me to take the cover off In the Drink so it would not be lifted in the air by the strong winds and all should be fine,” said Sharon. “From my professional background, I understand the value of good customer service. The shift to larger platforms and heavier, higher-powered outboards (even the occasional sterndrive) required larger tube diameters and a third, center pontoon to provide adequate buoyancy and safely carry the load. Charities have also long taken home a win at Barrel Boss. The last two year’s that charity recipient has been The Other 23, a nonprofit with a truly unique focus — introducing both current military and veterans to the incredible benefits of wake and ocean surfing and the camaraderie that comes with being included in the surfing community. “Surfing literally has a therapeutic effect on the body,” explains The Other 23’s Mike Ward. “Basically it’s a bilateral stimulation of the brain which increases synapse growth. There are very few things that encourage synapse growth in the adult brain and surfing is one of those. If you have PTSD, if you have a traumatic brain injury, coming out here and surfing literally helps your brain organize the mess that’s going on up there so you can focus on the wave you’re riding.” The Other 23 — named in reference to the organization’s focus not just on one hour of surfing but rather “the other 23” hours of the day where participants are able to bond, tell stories, build trust and build a support system of other individuals who are ready to help make positive change happen — began in Austin. The charity is now the recipient of all entry fees generated at the event. “Barrel Boss is a huge opportunity for us,” continues Ward. “We started out talking to MarineMax Sail & Ski because of their Adaptive division, because working with vets you get a lot of adaptive veterans out here who are athletes. They’re missing limbs or have had hip reconstructions, whatever it is that turns them into an adaptive athlete. Barrel Boss has been amazing about creating an Adaptive division so we can have these guys come out and compete against other adaptive riders.” “This is a local competition with local riders and supports local companies,” adds The Other 23 founder Adam Caballero. “That’s a big draw for us as far as wanting to be involved. Really just taking care of our own, taking care of the community, taking care of Austin, Texas and being very proud of that.”

far apart that you can turn the 484 on a dime. If you have any history or can turn on your computer and go to Facebook, you can probably handle the instrumentation on any MarineMax powercat,” says Ralph, who adds that he uses the autopilot a lot. “If you’re only going six knots, you tend to not go in a straight line, so you overcompensate with the steering. When you put the autopilot on, it makes it so easy.” Regarding the boat’s other amenities, Ralph admits that there’s a lot more on the 484 than on his, so there’s a learning curve, but all of the information and procedures are completely covered in the presentation and at the dock before you leave the marina. “A couple of the guys on the boat participated in the presentation with me, which is a safety feature to have others there,” says Ralph, and adds that his first charter was just him and his wife. “We chartered a 36-foot boat about fifteen years ago. When we’d pull up to a mooring ball, my wife would handle the boat and I’d handle the mooring.” Ralph does have one piece of advice for would-be charterers. “Because this is a luxury yacht that you are chartering, you have to remember, this is still a boat. And with that said, expect little things to possibly break or go bad. But, MarineMax has always been very speedy in sending someone out to fix whatever was not functioning properly.” Ralph adds that it was one of the couples’ first charter, and they were ecstatic with the experience. Prior to the trip, they didn’t understand why the Chaneys liked to charter. “When we returned the boat, he said ‘Now I get it.’”

The Aquila 70 is designed with a large f lybridge that can be fully enclosed or open with an isinglass enclosure for inclement weather. The f lybridge is laid out as a highly social area with comfortable seating and lavish appointments. The area is air-conditioned and heated for comfort. With the extra-wide beam, the aft deck is an ideal al-fresco social area with stairs leading to the water, built into the two hulls which act as natural seating. Moving into the salon and galley, the large side windows provide a panoramic vista while bringing in natural light. Entertaining a crowd is easy with the full-featured galley and wideopen salon. “The idea is to bring the outside in. When people boat, they want to see their environment, and with two levels of side windows there is a view from virtually every space,” Raas further stated. Below, the Aquila 70 can be configured with up to 6 staterooms with separate crew berths or arranged with 3 opulent staterooms with a captain’s cabin and separated pantry and laundry room. With the current joystick control systems, even dual straight shaft propulsion can be maneuvered precisely. “We are proud of what we have achieved as a leader in power catamarans and the new Aquila 70 sets the standard for aesthetics, technology and performance. Essentially they’re heating them, making sure that while the parts are in the mold they won’t change shape.” And that makes for tighter construction and a quiet, sturdy ride. The 680 Fly can do 30 knots with the hammer down and twin 1,200 hp MANs thrumming in her belly, and can also cruise at a zippy 25 knots. Of her speed numbers, Burke opines with a satisfied laugh, “She’s a beast.” The yacht also has a Seakeeper 16 that can pin her in place in rocky seas—a boon for anyone who is prone to mal de mer. And as if all these features and state-of-the-art construction techniques weren’t enough, the 680 Fly is also backed by the MarineMax team, which offers a full array of support all across the country, for just about anything: maintenance, operating aid, even a safe place to dock in a pinch. MarineMax also works closely with Galeon to ensure that the boats are built just as customers prefer them. “There are a lot of synergies,” says Burke. “We work closely together. They put in a lot of features that are good for the U.S. market and that’s directly because of the feedback they get from us. And in return they support us. They’re good at being on time

sport performance and fit the 45D with ingenious features that has set this boat apart from anything in its class. One of the most unique features of the 45 Divergence is the door-within-a-door fold out bulwarks on both port and starboard sides of the vessel. The door acts as a water-tight boarding gate, and when fully extended, it expands the cockpit to just over 19 feet and becomes a balcony of sorts. It’s the ideal spot to relax and unwind and makes for easy access to the water. Ocean Alexander has obtained the U.S. patent on this breakthrough design.
