PRESIDENT'S LETTER SU M M ER 2017
Welcome to MarineMax Lifestyles As many of you already know, I’m a water enthusiast. I grew up waterskiing and was fortunate enough to compete professionally. Still today, there is seldom a weekend that goes by that I’m not on skis in the water with my family – and barefoot skiing, running the slalom course, and trick skiing. The boating lifestyle has taught me many life lessons and values. Most importantly, it taught me about the importance of teamwork. Our team and family of boaters know that being part of the MarineMax family is the ultimate team sport that connects family and friends. This is why I love boating and being on the water so much, as well as my job at MarineMax. When MarineMax became a public company 19 years ago this past June, it didn’t take me long to fully appreciate how much I would come to depend on those around me in order for our team

SLX 230 The smallest SLX offering, the SLX 230 sets the tone for the level of innovation and luxury that follows. Below the waterline, the versatile Grip 6 hull showcases the work of renowned naval architects, delivering a soft, yet sporty ride. Add the available Dynamic Running Surface and improve acceleration, reduce bowrise and maintain optimal trim angles. Above, a social-friendly cockpit is highlighted by rich, supple vinyl, and a rear-facing lounge facing the spacious swim platform provides exceptional comfort whether coving or resting at anchor. Convert it to a sunpad should you want to soak up the rays in a state of total repose.
SLX-W 230 Foregoing sterndrive power for a MerCruiser 6.2L V-drive inboard, the SLX-W features wake-shaping capabilities that rival dedicated towsport boats. Nearly 2,000 pounds of integrated ballast dramatically pumps up wake size; wake-shaping plates on the transom sculpt those wakes to near perfection. Controlling ballast, wake shape, setting speed and more is easily handled at the helm via the intuitive DynamicDisplay touchscreen dash. A standard overhead watersports tower elevates the towrope; available tower-mounted racks keeps the cockpit clutter free. And unlike traditional tow boats, the SLX’s deep-V hull means you won’t go running for home when conditions turn rough.
SLX 250 At 25’ 6”, the SLX 250 makes everything a little bigger and better, increasing passenger capacity to 15 and offering power choices as high as 380 hp. Two seating options are available, one with a single passenger seat in front of the generous L-shaped, wraparound bench and the other a double-wide companion seat with convertible, pivoting backrest. The most welcome addition for families, however, is the inclusion of an enclosed head compartment within the port console. Finished with teak and stainless steel accents, the compartment features a lockable door and molded fiberglass liner for good looks and low maintenance.

SLX 280 Like all SLX models, the 28’ 6” SLX 280 showcases Sea Ray’s most innovative technologies, including Quiet Ride, a system of acoustic insulation, vibration dampening materials and design choices that reduce noise, vibration and harshness by to up to 50-percent. Quiet Ride lowers average noise levels by nearly seven decibels, inviting conversation while reducing fatigue. That reduction also allows the 280’s standard Rockford Fosgate stereo system to shine. Stream your favorite music via Bluetooth and enjoy control at both the helm and coving-friendly swim platform. Desirable options include a wet bar, power tower, and submersible swim step.
SLX 310 At 31’ 6” in LOA and 10’ 2” in beam, the SLX 310 offers increased
interior
space
and
seagoing
potential.
Standard issue are twin 250hp MerCruiser 4.5L Bravo III sterndrives; options include both diesel and gasoline drives to 700hp, and a choice of configurations with Axius, Mercury’s intuitive joystick control system that takes the stress out of docking, allows the boat to literally spin within its own length, and with the SkyHook feature, even hold position. All the extras are there, including Quiet Ride, Dynamic Running Surface, and Active Trim, along with a standard wet bar, power tower with integrated Bimini, and port head compartment with VacuFlush toilet.
SLX 310 OB Like the SLX 310, but prefer the features of outboard propulsion? The SLX 310 OB replaces the sterndrives with dual Mercury 300 Verado outboards in standard trim, and the option of 350 Verados in both black and white color schemes, while still offering the option of Sea Ray’s Dynamic Running Surface, Axius joystick piloting and Active Trim. The latter, available on all SLX models, takes the guesswork out of trimming the craft, adjusting trim to speed, conditions, and turns, while improving engine performance and lowering fuel consumption. Outboard power vastly increases storage capacity, reclaiming that real estate below the sunpad normally reserved for sterndrive engines.

MarineMax Lifestyles
SLX 350 Yacht Certified, the 34’ 6” SLX 350 remains true to the classic SLX layout, while mixing in a choice of extras that tailor the craft to your lifestyle. Choose from standard hardtop, or for those that prefer to let the sun shine in, opening sunroof. The available SureShade extends and retracts from the top to extend coverage aft. There are also several choices in radar arch style. Standard issue is a wet bar with solid-surface countertop, sink, and refrigerator. The enclosed head includes a VacuFlush toilet and wood storage cabinet. Opposite, spacious storage is tucked below the helm.
SLX 350 OB Featuring a trio of Mercury 300 Verados with standard joystick piloting, the 350 OB exploits the power-toweight advantage of outboards while simplifying engine access, easing maintenance concerns, and dramatically increasing storage space. The latter includes drawers below the seats, two cooler nooks, hanging lockers, even dedicated storage for a stern anchor. As on all SLX models, Quiet Ride technology, Active Trim, Dynamic Running Surface and digital throttle control are available, as is a choice of hardtop and radar arch options. Upgrade to the LED lighting package and you can set the mood come nightfall and extend the party.
SLX 400 Sea Ray dubs the SLX 400 the “Entertainer,” an apt description given this 39’ 6” model’s emphasis on socializing. Board via the expansive swim platform, before settling into an oversized sunpad with multiposition backrest. Make yourself at home in the spacious cockpit, stopping off for drinks at a well-equipped wet bar. Settle into a choice of conversation-friendly seating, including a forward-facing couch, in the bow. Retractable sunshades deploy from the hardtop. Below, a cabin sleeps four. There’s even stowage for a pair of standup paddleboards. Arguably the coolest feature, however, is the innovative swim terrace. Created by pivoting down the rear, starboard quarter of the hullside, it extends the cockpit edge right to the water.

Having grown up with boats, and grown with her husband through the Sea Ray line of boats, Stacey is comfortable taking off for a weekend with the Pink Pirates. “There’s lots of space, and I’m taking advantage of it already,” she says. She was planning a trip to Captiva with her nieces, nephews, and sister to celebrate her nephew’s high school graduation. “We’ve had bachelorette parties, birthday parties – we make up reasons to go,” Stacey says. “John is always in golf tournaments, so I take care of the wives.” Or, he will invite friends over to play poker into the wee hours – “and we’ve got to get away,” Stacey says. “So we all go boating. The guys will ask him, ‘When are we going on the boat?’ and he’ll say, ‘There’s only one captain, and she’s a she.’ They’ll tell him to hire a captain, but nobody’s driving my boat!” Like any experienced captain, she has run into some situations on the water. Once she took the Pink Pirates to Useppa Island, and on the way home she hit fog like she’d never seen in 30 years of boating. “You couldn’t see 50 yards in front of you, so I had to rely on the radar,” she says. On the way home from another trip to Key West, she navigated through a windstorm. “I had 10- or 12-foot seas cracking over the edge of my boat,” she says. After passing through the weather, only about a half hour from home, she threw a rod in one of the engines. “If that had happened in those rough seas, I don’t know what I’d have done,” Stacey says. But she has learned from those situations. “There’ve been a few things that have taught me: pay attention to the weather, and talk to people at the docks,” she says. Now, she is inspiring women in her circle of friends as a result of those trips. “I have a girlfriend who bought a boat, and she’s the captain,” Stacey says. “When she’s on our boat, she’s my first mate, and when I’m on her boat, I’m the first mate. We even have hats.”

However, just as most things that claim to be “everything to everyone,” it usually means that it is a “jack of all trades, but master of none.” That does not describe the 380 Outrage which truly masters so much of what matters to serious fishing enthusiasts, those who love to entertain family and friends as well as yacht owners seeking a versatile tender. For the offshore fishing crowd, the 380 Outrage has a tremendous amount of standard features that deliver, starting with all the power and smooth comfortable ride to get you to the fishing grounds quickly and stress-free. Other angling features include a 60-gallon transom livewell, a converting leaning post and ample strategically placed rod holders. Add the optional upper station with joystick controls and you have a pelagic predictor second to none. Entertaining a crowd is a breeze with the notched bow which features expansive seating and storage, while the cockpit includes a new aft-facing couch with optional removable table and an optional Summer Kitchen, perfect for entertaining friends and family. The comfort of the air-conditioned cabin and helm deck give solace for those seeking rest and relief. Most of all the Boston Whaler 380 Outrage defies the multi-tool analogy because of its extravagant attention to detail, rugged build and athletic prowess that will give the operator and guest a feeling of calmness and ease whatever the situation. Boston Whaler calls this sensation “Confidence to the Core.” They got that right too.

for a neophyte boater like me to back into the slip,” said O’Rourke. He also prefers the simplicity and reliability of the outboard motors. A budding fisherman, O’Rourke is excited to have a serious offshore fishing boat. “We weren’t too successful in our first trip out, but we’re working on it,” he quipped. Beyond the physical features, what O’Rourke, who is also a helicopter pilot, likes best is the same thing that drew him to flying – navigation, planning and adventure. Although a slow adopter, Maike is glad they have the boat too, and enjoys the simple pleasure of going out for breakfast in the mornings. One of the couple’s favorite activities is entertaining on cocktail cruises. The boat’s forward-berth dining table, convenient cockpit prep station, huge storage and YETI cooler make it easy to store everything needed for the party. One particularly memorable outing was an evening cruise to the classic beach bar, Stan’s Idle Hour in Goodland, FL. The group spent a cool Florida evening on the boat deck listening to live music and people watching the unique crowd of locals and tourists. An unexpected pleasure the boating lifestyle brings is watching the dolphins that follow them on their excursions. “They’ll come right up to the side of the boat, turn over and look at you,” said O’Rourke. “My wife totally digs it.” In the end, Jim isn’t sure how much big water cruising he and Maike will do. Talking with fellow boaters on the Boca Grande Getaway! gave him the confidence to consider a trip to Key West or perhaps the Bahamas. He’s also looking to do more fishing. The couple is definitely considering future MarineMax Getaways!

Ocean Reef in Key Largo to Chelsea Piers in Manhattan. Smith’s relationships with maritime attorneys and other professionals, plus his knowledge of hull materials and the world’s leading shipyards complement these. “I’ll take you from Louisiana to Lürssen. You pick,” he says. Yacht companies often talk about customers being part of their family. It may sound like marketing-speak, but it rings true due to the close relationship many owners have with their brokers and builders. So, why not take the opportunity to keep you in the family longer? Both Saxon and Smith understand the importance of this—and have already experienced it first-hand within MarineMax. Saxon says five of the 12 owners who listed their yachts with the company’s charter fleet are previous customers who had left, for no other reason than the resources not being present, and have now returned to the company. As for Smith, he corrected misinformation one broker and client had heard from other sources about what it would take to put together a bid package. The bottom line in both situations: access and information. “These guys are all smart. You just have to educate them,” Smith says. Whether it’s enlisting Saxon’s help to create the employment contracts for crew, establishing a solid charter marketing program, or asking Smith the differences among the American and European customyacht builders, you can feel confident you’re going to get that education. And it’s coming from the friendly confines of the family where you already belong.

# M Y A D VA N T A G E MATTHEW GOWEN SHARES HIS BOATING EXPERIENCE WITH MARINEMAX
"I wanted to quickly send you a note to compliment Jacob Coyle and the MarineMax experience. I grew up in Northern Florida with a love for boats and the water; spending a ton of time on my friends' and our families’ boats – but never having owned one myself. Since I was a teenager, I had always dreamed of one day living on the water and owning a boat myself. Three years ago, that dream started to become a reality and I started researching almost every boating option under the sun. Jacob actually started chatting with me about some of my options maybe two or three years ago, before I was really ready to make any decisions. Upon being ready to make that purchase early this year, Jacob sat and happily answered about 1,000 questions from me. I looked at other boats but the service, reputation, and haggleless/pressure-less experience at MarineMax made a huge difference in decision making. It is a relief knowing that, as a first time boater, every potential issue, problem, question, and maintenance/service need will be taken care of quickly and professionally – and if I have any questions or concerns, I have a resource that will help without pressure. I take delivery of my Sea Pro 208 Bay tomorrow and could not be more excited."

MarineMax Lifestyles
Matt has since taken delivery of his new Sea Pro 208 Bay boat. In a recent interview, we asked him about the delivery, why MarineMax, and how his family is enjoying their new boat. Q: Why MarineMax? A: MarineMax’s reputation for follow-through, the service team that will come to my dock, the educational seminars, like Women on Water ®, the Go Boating kit, and exclusive Getaways! ® were major factors. Q: Anything else you might want to share? A: Jacob Coyle was an immense help when navigating options. He steered me away from options that I thought I wanted but didn’t need and explained why I needed other options, like a raw water wash-down system. I can't imagine boating without it. Q: Jacob, how do you feel about Matt’s response? A: I appreciate and am humbled by what Matt said. Behind the sale is the entire MarineMax team: the store manager, the sales manager, our business managers, service team members, our delivery captain, and our marketing team. It is totally a group effort. Read more at marinemax.com/myadvantage
