We are very pleased to present this new catalogue which features our extensive range of antennas, mounts and accessories for sailing boats, power boats and commercial vessels. This is our first catalogue since the Communication Aerials / V-Tronix business was acquired by Shakespeare – and the benefit of this alliance is clearly evident from our greatly expanded range of products. Not only are we continuing to offer our popular range of power boat antennas and mounts which are V-Tronix branded and specially made for us by Shakespeare – but this catalogue also features a number of excellent new Shakespeare products which have been selected for their versatility and value.

Both Shakespeare and V-Tronix have many decades of experience in designing and manufacturing antennas and electronic equipment for the marine and land-based industries. We are fully aware that our products are often used in extremely hostile environments where safety and reliability are of the utmost importance. The AAX1 and AAX5 are used to supply d.c. voltage to our Active Antenna when d.c. power is not provided by the receiver. The AAX5 also performs the function of a 5-way splitter unit, allowing the connection of radio navigation equipment, communication, Navtex and broadcast receivers to the one antenna. Unlike other meters in its class, the ART-3 tests receiver function as well as output power and VSWR (antenna efficiency). Cool Running The converters operate with a power conversion efficiency as high as 93%. This results in very little heat being generated. This allows them to be mounted in less well ventilated positions which makes installation easier.

The use of Surface Mount Technology results in 50% reduction in the size of the units, making it easier for the installer to find a conveinient location. The low mass SMT components are less prone to vibration damage, further increasing the reliability of the units.

All the units feature low off load current, less than 10mA, which is probably less than the self discharge current of the vessel’s battery. So in most cases this can be ignored, simplifying the installation by removing the need to switch the converter off.

All PowerVerters are enclosed in a rugged, marine grade, powder coated, aluminium extrusion sealed with nylon end caps. There are no ventilation holes to permit stray objects, dust or water droplets to enter the case.

A red LED indicates when there is output from the converter; this gives reassurance to the installation engineer and speeds fault finding.

World wide marine electrical systems are often “floating earth”, to prevent eletrolysis through salt water.

No external fuses to be tampered with. (Fuses will only blow if there is a component fault so there is no need to make them accessible).

All the PowerVerters fit onto a clip. It is easy to fit the clip into awkward places. The clip is fixed in three points allowing it to be mounted on uneven surfaces.

Negative Earth Electrical Systems Most vehicles in Europe use “negative earth” electrical systems for which low cost s converters are most suitable.

A Marine Radio is only as good as its Antenna Knowledgeable sailors and power boaters realise that even the most expensive radio will perform poorly with a second rate antenna that saves money up front, but jeopardises the welfare of those on board. That’s why they prefer the quality, performance and reliability of V-Tronix and Shakespeare marine antennas. From the largest seagoing ships to the smallest R.I.B.s, our antennas have performed for years and years under the worst marine conditions, always performing to their maximum design capabilities. Tips on choosing the proper Antenna Since there are many factors which influence the selection of a proper antenna for a specific application, we encourage consultation with a marine electronics engineer, wherever possible.

Sailing Boats:

Gain:

As a general rule, sailing boats have an antenna approximately 1 metre long mounted on the masthead. Some racing enthusiasts opt for a longer antenna mounted on the stern in the event demasting should occur. Either is acceptable. A decision should be made on personal preference.

This is a rating stated in decibels (dB). Generally, the higher the gain, the greater the communicating range. However, keep in mind that the higher the gain, the more compressed the beam width becomes (see illustration). A narrow beam can cause fading in rolling seas. Small, lightweight boats, which roll excessively in heavy seas normally do not use gain rating above 6dB. The more stable the platform of a vessel, the higher the gain that can effectively be used.

Power Boats Most power boats from 16’ to 35’ in length, use a standard 1.5 metre antenna, while bigger vessels have the option of larger antennas with more gain. Caution: Be sure to allow enough fold down room for clearing low bridges or other limitations. Whichever choice is made, a sturdy mount must be used to avoid damage to both boat and antenna.

When this is not possible, the following tips should be considered before making a final decision:

Height is paramount in getting the greatest range and so it is important to choose an antenna that can be installed as high as possible on the boat.
