Attention to detail is the main reason our boats are the best available anywhere in the world. The combination of solid teak joinery and hand laid fiberglass construction produces a boat that is light, strong, attractive and easy to maintain. Teak is the wood used for fitting out Whitehall Rowing & Sail boats due to its superior strength, longevity and beauty. Teak has a natural oil that prevents decay and enables easy refinishing. Before delivery all woodwork is treated with 3 coats of high quality exterior grade oil. A maintenance kit is included with new boat. As little as three hours a year keeps these boats looking like new. Gunnels are copper roved and riveted producing maximum strength and stiffness. Teak spacers simulate traditional frame ends and provide a secure handhold for carrying or handling the boat. Masts and booms are made of Sitka Spruce. Wood floats, looks good and feels good. It is easy to add fittings and simple to maintain. Our free standing masts drop into their sockets and simply lift out to stow within the boat. Complicated wires or stays are gone. The fiberglass hulls are built in our own shop

where we exercise strict quality control. Using the highest quality resins and fiberglass materials available we achieve excellent resin to glass ratios insuring tough, long lasting hulls. They feature impeccably molded lapstrake style planking. The hull exterior is finished with a traditional white gelcoat. White gel is really tough, many times tougher than paint, does not show minor scratches and repairs easily. The light gray interior gelcoat is the traditional color, easy on the eyes and shows dirt less than most other colors.

The hulls are comprised of hand laid four ply mat/roving laminates with double thickness on the keel. This hull lamination produces a weight that is 20 to 30 percent lighter than the wood originals. We do not promote ultra-light construction as it tends to make traditional boats feel â&#x20AC;&#x153;corkyâ&#x20AC;? and less stable, unlike the originals. The lapstrake styled planking, in addition to its beauty, provides longitudinal stiffness and prevents flexing which adds greatly to longevity.

Buoyancy chambers are cored fiberglass with generous flotation situated so that these boats will float level even if filled with water. Waterproof inspection ports in the buoyancy chambers provide dry storage for safety gear, flares, flashlights, and other items such as cameras. Metal fastenings used are either bronze, copper or stainless steel. Seats are properly fitted with an appropriate gap at the hull side. Whitehall Spirit sailing models feature a removable aft thwart for additional leg room while sailing. Sailing models are fitted with our custom made teak blocks. The daggerboard or centerboard wells and mast support systems are constructed of solid fiberglass heavily reinforced and integrally molded to the hull. Cast bronze centerboards pivot and kick up on impact. A cast bronze “whale’s tail” and stainless cable raises or lowers the centerboard. The rudder/tiller, built of solid teak, features a kick up or lock down system. A built in retainer clip keeps the rudder firmly secured while underway.

Bow and stern eyes are integral and copper sleeved, vastly superior to protruding bow eyes and extremely strong for towing purposes. Boats can be hung on davits or boathouse rafters using bow and stern eyes. Custom lift rings can also be installed when required. Model names are cast into the bronze bow caps. Bronze bowcaps and transom corners protect these areas and add traditional, old world charm.

Whitehall boats are built to be around for half a century or more and handle many times the abuse of a wooden hulled boat.

The builder’s plaque, cast in bronze, carries the official hull number. (A serial number is also cast into the transom gel.) Like a limited edition print Whitehall boats are designed and built to increase in value and become heirlooms enjoyed for generations.

The Whitehall Spirit

The lines made famous by this classic rowing boat can be traced back for hundreds of years. The most distinctive feature of a Whitehall is it’s “wineglass” shaped stern. The Whitehall Spirit 14 and 17 fully display the elegance of their heritage. They also retain their historic beam or width dimensions, enabling them to carry four to five adults safely and handle rough water with ease. The full length keel keeps these boats tracking straight while under way, very useful for distance rowing in choppy water. This hull shape has been perfected for maximum speed and minimum effort in all conditions providing the amazing seaworthiness for which Whitehalls’ are celebrated. Over a hundred years ago Whitehalls were used extensively by everyone from ship’s pilots and harbor police to water taxi operators. We built the first Whitehall Spirit models in 1985. The hulls were built from lines selected from the Mystic Seaport Maritime Museum’s extensive collection. The Whitehall Spirit 14 and 17 represent more of the “Boston” style of hull. WHITEHALL SPIRIT 17' TRADITIONAL ROWING T

In the early days when Whitehalls were considered the best working or pleasure boats in any harbor, a 17 foot length was the favored size. This was because not only could it be handled easily alone, it could carry up to five people and cargo. This is the size for cruising and exploring or just getting out for a refreshing break. It is available with optional teak floors providing more of a yachtlike appearance. Floors feature built in footstops and are removable. Load up some camping gear and get out to those quiet peaceful spots that are still quite plentiful and forget about those crowded anchorages. It is light enough to launch or land on the beach, and easy to handle using a Beach Hauler boat slider track, an appropriate boat dolly or a small boat trailer.

Featuring two sliding seat stations and rowing sculls this boat moves right along. It can easily be handled by a single rower. The sliding seat units can easily be removed in minutes and replaced with the regular bench thwarts for traditional rowing. The hinged bronze outriggers hold the sculls securely in place and can hinge fully inboard, handy when landing at a dock, or during transport. Classic lines and excellent performance under oars, sculls or sails make this our most sought after model particularly as a single slide seat rowing boat and often as a sailing model. The lapstrake style hull planking is exquisitely molded and simply gazing at it is a delightful pleasure. Up close the teak woodwork represents fine craftsmanship and finish rarely seen in this day and age.

The Sailing models are fitted with a modern adaptation of the Standing Lug, a type of rig commonly found on craft of this size before the 1900’s The “salty looking” standing lug sail rig is the preferred rig for a small boat for a variety of reasons. The large sail area possible on a low mast reduces the heeling moment of the boat (tendency to tip) without sacrificing performance. This rig is fast and easy to set up. Unlike a “dipping lug” it can be tacked without lowering the yard and shifting it from one side of the mast to the other. The free standing mast requires no stays or wires and simply lifts out of its socket to stow within the boat. The sail can be dropped or reefed (made smaller) while underway. Those desiring the benefits of a low impact full body workout love rowing a Whitehall Spirit 14 fitted with a sliding seat unit, bronze outriggers and 9'6" sculls. It offers stability, comfort and safety that is not possible in a typical rowing shell. Rowing with a sliding seat uses 800 calories per hour, about double that of jogging, and you can even take along a friend or two. Leg power harnessed by using a sliding seat eases arm and back stresses significantly. Because both legs push together knee strain is also minimal. The Whitehall Spirit 14 sailing model fitted with its standing lug rig is reminiscent of the sailing Whitehalls of the last century. Whitehalls that both rowed and sailed were prized by the New York City harbor police in the mid 1800s because they needed fast harbor transportation. This boat is fun to sail alone or with one or two crew. The Whitehall Spirit 14 is fast under sail and can easily exceed its rowing speed of 5 knots as it slips lightly across the water. THE TYEE SPIRIT 14'

The Tyee Spirit 14 originates from Campbell River, a small community on the east coast of Vancouver Island. Every summer a large run of Chinook Salmon return to the river to spawn. Those fish that have matured to over 30 lbs are called “Tyee” salmon. About 1910 Ned Painter, a local boatbuilder, began turning out beautiful lapstrake cedar planked rowboats 14' in length and 4'2" in beam. These became very popular with the local sport fishermen. Painter’s boats were renowned for the way they carried a load and comfortably handled the choppy tidal waters around Campbell River. A local industry grew up around these boats featuring professional salmon guides who worked the “Tyee Hole” every season. In 1924 the world famous “Campbell River Tyee Club” was founded. To qualify as a member one must, while fishing from a rowboat handled under oars alone, land a Tyee salmon. Flotillas of rowboats still ply the river mouth, a guide at the oars and one or two sportsmen holding their rods anticipating a strike.

In 1988 professional guides Bill Herkus and Mike Barker insisted we build a Whitehall quality Tyee boat for themselves and other fishing guides.The lines were taken from an original boat owned by Bill Herkus who has guided for over forty seasons. We called this boat the “Tyee Spirit”. The Tyee Spirit has received great acceptance in both North America and Europe as a traditional rowboat, slide seat boat and sailboat. It best suits those who require a little more space and room for more gear in a classic traditional boat.

TYEE SPIRIT 14' TRADITIONAL ROWING The Tyee Spirit with its exquisite lapstrake style planking features a fullness of beam which extends along the hull, with the transom being three inches broader than a Whitehall Spirit 14. The Tyee Spirit has an “untucked” transom rather than the “wineglass” shape of a Whitehall. The fuller hull shape adds buoyancy aft, making the boat suitable for carrying a heavier load and, if desired, a small outboard, useful in some situations. Either a single rower or two rowers in tandem can row the Tyee Spirit. The full tracking keel makes distance rowing a pleasure. The forward storage locker enables gear such as small gas tanks, tackle boxes or lifejackets to be left aboard, and kept dry and secure.

Fitted with a sliding seat unit and cast solid bronze outriggers this Tyee Spirit 14 offers all the features of the Whitehall Spirit 14 in a hull that is slightly wider and fuller that can carry an even larger load. A good rower can match the speed of the Whitehall Spirit 14. It features a single slide seat position. The slide seat unit installs or removes in minutes converting the boat back into a traditional oars-on-the-gunnel double/single position rowboat. As a result of its fuller hull shape the sailing model of the Tyee Spirit easily accommodates three or four people. The boat can be sailed with the crew either sitting on the seats or on the floor as in dinghy sailing. Sitting low provides for better all-around visibility. The efficient, easily handled lug rig sets up in less than five minutes and can be stowed inside the boat. It features a kick-up rudder and a bronze kickup centerboard is standard. WESTCOAST SLIDE SEAT

The Westcoast slide seat sculling rowboat just flies along using 9'6" sculls and easily handles rowing in nasty chop. Tracking is positive due to the full length tracking keel. The Westcoast can carry passengers while in slide seat sculling mode although some weight or another passenger forward will help to trim the hull and keep it level. If the Westcoast is a sailing model it is fitted with a kick up bronze centerboard. The slide seat unit fits over top. The slide seat unit can be removed in a couple of minutes and the standard bench seat installed converting it back to a traditional rowboat. The Westcoast is a great traditional rowboat, slideseat sculling boat, or a delightful sailing dinghy and even carries an outboard motor very well. It functions superbly as a cottage boat, trailer boat, fishing boat or yacht tender.

MINTO ROWING DINGHY The Minto is prized for its use as a dinghy, tender, or small sailing or rowing boat. In the 1950s the “original” of the Minto was found washed up on the grounds of Our Lady Minto Hospital on Saltspring Island. The boat was estimated to have been built at the turn of the century and the builder is unknown. MINTO ROWING SAILING DINGHY The sailing version of the Minto is fitted with a “salty” standing lug sail rig, the preferred rig for a small boat for a variety of reasons. The large sail area possible on a low mast reduces the heeling moment of the boat (tendency to tip) without sacrificing performance. This rig is fast and easy to set up. TRADITIONAL OARS These oars are built out of Sitka Spruce, the most favored wood for oar construction, which provides light weight and strength. The right pair of oars is governed by a few factors. A boat used for short trips in crowded waters where maneuverability is important requires easily handled non overlapping short oars. Novice rowers will find getting their moves down a lot easier with shorter non-overlapped oars. An oar acts as a lever pivoting around the oarlock. The longer the length inside the boat the longer the lever hence more power with less effort. Maximized power necessitates overlapped oars. Long distance rowing, carrying large heavy loads, and, to a degree, enjoying the stroke action once it’s learned will favor longer overlapped oars. Boat dollies are useful for transporting a boat for short distances such as to and from launch sites at a beach or lakeshore. THE HISTORY OF THE

WHITEHALL Howard Chapelle states in his book American Small Sailing Craft that “The Whitehall represents a refinement in an old type rather than a distinct and local innovation. The boat is on the same general model that was used in very fast pulling boats, the wherry, cutter, and gig from 1690 or earlier, on to the end of the nineteenth century.” All of these boats were of course constructed of wood, the only medium used at the time.“Originally the Whitehall was lap-strake, but caravel had become common in the New York boats by 1850.”

Mystery surrounds the origins of the Whitehall. The early history of this distinctive, elegant and extremely practical craft are unclear. In earlier times builders were often sailors or seafaring men. Taught by the sea to be conservative, they stuck with the tried and true. Successful designs for large and small craft alike evolved slowly and as certain desirable qualities were attained and perfected they rarely changed.

Some hold that the Whitehall design was introduced from England. However, the famed nautical historian Howard I. Chappelle, cites the opinion of the late W.P. Stephens that in New York City there is a Whitehall Street and this was where the Whitehall was first built. Chappelle, Stephens and others agree that the design came into existence some time in the 1820’s in New York City, having first been built by navy yard apprentices who had derived their model to some extent from the old navy gig.

Quoting from noted author and marine historian John Gardner, “The Whitehall was not a ship’s boat, but a vehicle of harbor and coastwise transportation. Intended primarily to be rowed, but capable of a good showing under sail as well, it was fast, seaworthy, and trim.

Whitehalls were in great demand in the days of sail on the waterfront of a big commercial port such as New York City and Boston in the early nineteenth century. Not only were these boats the choice of crimps and boarding house runners, but of nearly everyone else as well who required reliable and expeditious transportation from one part of the harbor to another – pilots, ship’s crews, brokers, ship chandlers, newspaper reporters, insurance agents, doctors, and many others.

Quoting from Rudder magazine, August 1943, Captain Carlton L. Smith states a somewhat contrary view, “This delver into nautical lore has never been able to ascertain whether the Whitehall boat originated at Whitehall, New York, or at Whitehall, England. It is extremely likely from the latter place. At any rate, the model of a “pure breed” Whitehall, that was so useful a rowed-on-the gunnel workboat at Boston and at The Battery at New York City and, later, at San Francisco, evolved from the “English Wherry.” 30

12 footers to five station boats topping out at 26 feet overall. The small boats were used as for-hire craft and they carried one or two passengers. Larger boats of 16 to 18 feet were used by ship’s chandlers to carry samples or to take out gear in an emergency. The largest were used by groups of thugs called press gangs, who rounded up or shanghaied beached sailors and hauled them off to crew aboard outbound ships.

The Whitehall was the recognized champion in speed and it was only natural that unofficial competition led to organized racing. Many stories are told of the intercity competition between Boston and New York and the large sums that were wagered on these challenges. Rowing became the principal American competitive sport on the Eastern seaboard from the middle to the end of the nineteenth century. It was the influence of the Whitehall as much as anything else that made it so.

Captain Smith, born in Boston in 1869, tells in the aforementioned Rudder article the story of a deep water boarding house owner by the name of Sorenson. “Captain Alfred Sorenson usually got what he went after, whether he was in quest of sailors for his boarding-house or to pluck a fellow being from a watery grave. He outran the fleet of Whitehalls once. He reached a point off the tip of Cape Cod. Came a howling winter gale. Was Alfred fazed? He was not. Rolling, or furling his sail tightly he bent on his warp. With this sea anchor he lay head to it. After Thrity-six hours of exposure, he spotted a ship and came home.” According to Captain Smith it was because these boats rowed so easily in calms and sailed so well in a breeze that they were even used by the New York Police for harbor patrols.

TRADITIONAL R OWING

Rowing in an easily pulled classic rowboat with a pair of oars or sculls is enjoyable and exceptionally beneficial for you. Rowing a boat is as good for your mind as it is for your waist and muscles. The comforting rhythm of the stroke promotes a sense of peacefulness as you explore small creeks and islands and row past quiet natural shorelines. Rowing strengthens arm, leg, back and stomach muscles, it increases stamina and cardiovascular endurance. It’s smooth, even exercise with no stress on the joints. A good steady rower in an efficient rowboat can maintain four or five knots for hours at a time. You have the option of inviting friends or family along to share the experience. As you explore you become more fit, more alive, more responsive to your surroundings and more a part of them.

Whitehall boats feature integral buoyancy tanks capable of keeping the boat up with crew aboard even when the hull is full of water. The buoyancy is positioned either in the ends of the boat or along the sides. This insures that if the boat is capsized it can be re-righted and will float level and thus be capable of being bailed out. Plan your trip and watch your weather particularly when rowing in an exposed area. Know what the tide is doing and stage your rowing so that you’re going with the tidal flow. as much as possible. On rivers, row upstream against the current if you are not familiar with the area to avoid rapids or overfalls and make the trip back more relaxing.

Unfortunately people attempting to row boats designed for outboard motors have developed a belief that rowing is hard work and slow going. These boats are indeed hard to row in most conditions and difficult to dangerous under oars in high winds and waves. Often their oarlock sockets are insufficiently strong or improperly located adding to the bad experience.

Rowing is much more efficient than paddling because all the energy is utilized to drive the boat forward. As the oar is pivoted on the oarlock it acts as a long, powerful lever that wastes little energy and allows great distances to be traveled with little strain. Anyone who has attempted to paddle a canoe a considerable distance against a strong wind knows how tiring paddling can be. A good rowboat keeps moving well between strokes. It also tracks along a straight course when rowed evenly. A boat from 12 to 17 feet in length is ideal, with double positions on boats 14 feet and over. Older designs from before the age of the internal combustion engine are excellent rowboats. Whitehalls are probably the best known. It is notable that the most efficient boats are often the most attractive. Double station position craft such as the Whitehall Spirit are ideal for tandem rowing. It’s great to be able to spell each other off and then really put on the speed together. In tandem rowing the person sitting in the bow position copies the stroke rate of their partner, staying carefully in time. Think of it as a slow, rhythmic dance for two.

Rowing considerable distances is easily accomplished once a rower has enough experience. Many people have rowed thousands of miles, even across oceans. In a few hours of good conditions it’s easy to cover twenty or thirty miles. When distance rowing never think about your distant goal, just take it a stroke at a time and enjoy the ride. Always leave word of your planned destination and time of return with someone responsible. Always have your personal flotation device (PFD) in the boat if not on. In most places this is a legal requirement. Keep lifejackets

on small children. Have a bailer or a small bucket aboard and a small sounding device such as an air horn or a whistle. These may also be legally required. If you wish to change places while rowing be sure the boat is stable enough. To do so safely, keep your weight low and centered in the boat as much as possible

ROWING A BOAT IS AS GOOD FOR YOUR MIND, AS IT IS FOR YOUR BODY. If there is a chance of being out after dark it’s a good plan to carry a waterproof flashlight and perhaps some flares. A portable GPS, cellphone or handheld VHF radio are useful safety gear to consider carrying on long trips. If possible keep these stowed in a compartment aboard or tied to the boat in a waterproof sealed bag. Clothing is a consideration. Wear or bring a sun hat. Sunglasses will cut reflective glare. Long sleeves or trouser legs can be rolled up for tanning or rolled down to prevent burning. Selecting your oars depends on the type of rowing you plan to do and the boat used. A well made set of spruce spoon oars is a good choice for an easily pulled, classic rowboat. The oars should be correctly fitted to the beam and length of the boat. Smaller dinghies and tenders have the oars set so their grips are about two thumbs apart on the return stroke. On larger craft more leverage is gained, giving a more powerful stroke, by overlapping the grips a few inches. Maneuvering is a little easier with non-lapped oars, particularly for a beginner. Using your oars correctly will make a big difference in every respect. When learning, simply hold the oars at the same angle for the entire stroke. Later, when you’re more experienced try dropping your wrists at the end of each stroke. This will “feather” the oars, bringing the blades parallel to the water’s surface reducing windage. Carry the blade 2 or 3 inches above the surface on the return stroke. A foot brace will allow leg power to be used and more importantly anchor your position in the boat. To maximize your stroke use your leg muscles, back, and finally pull by bending your arms. Pull with your blades just under the surface, not buried deep underwater. The pitch or angle of the blade as it enters the water at the beginning of the stroke is critical to controlling the oar. If the pitch angle is too far forward the blade will “wash out” and splash along the surface. If the pitch angle is too far back the blade will want to dive deep underwater. Continue to adjust the pitch angle and you will find it is easy to determine when you have it right.

Bring the boat up to an even speed gradually and keep it steady. Sometimes pulling too hard will actually slow the boat by trying to force it to climb up on it’s own bow wave. Row smoothly and evenly applying comfortable power rather than high tempo.

Because you face aft (backward) in a rowboat, you observe the places you’ve been instead of constantly watching where you’re going, a refreshing viewpoint! A glance ahead every few strokes is enough to stay fully aware of your surroundings at rowing speeds in open water. Looking ahead is easiest at the end of the “pull” phase of the stroke. Treat it as a gentle stretch exercise turning your head first one way, then the other way next time. For added visibility and ease of handling in crowded conditions most boats can be rowed backwards or astern.

The oarlock and seat arrangement in certain boats enable the rower to shift position and row facing forward. The Whitehall Spirit 14 rows quite well this way. The most common problem for novice rowers is overdoing it. Pulling on the oars just feels so great as the boat surges ahead with every stroke, that people don’t notice their muscles, unaccustomed to this new activity, have been strained. Take it easy, row gently and firmly, glance ahead every third or fourth pull to see what’s coming up. Relax, enjoy the fresh air, the sounds of the water and one of the oldest pleasurable water experiences known.

THE HISTORY AND BENEFITS OF SLIDING SEAT ROWING

The Yale/Harvard rowing race of 1870 marked a turning point in rowing technology. The Yale oarsmen appeared wearing greased leather pants! Upon boarding their craft they locked their feet in place and slid back and forth on smooth wooden planks, incorporating leg power into their rowing stroke and increasing the arc of the oars. They won handsomely. The following year the sliding (rolling) seat was introduced and is still used exclusively by all racing sculling craft.The first Whitehall to utilize the sliding seat is not documented. But the Mystic Seaport Museum in its collections of small boats has a beautiful 16'9" model built in Boston in 1879 with a sliding seat for the oarsman on a set of runners extending over the centerboard case. Sliding seat rowing differs from traditional oars-onthe-gunnel rowing in many ways. The length of the oars (called “sculls” on a sliding seat unit) are longer, and the distance between the oarlocks (called pins) and height of the seat have become standard measurements. The distance between the pins is extended past the beam of the boat with hinged extensions called outriggers. Whitehall Rowing and Sail’s models are identical in slide seat and pin to pin dimensions to a racing shell. These outriggers are made of tough cast silicon bronze and hinge inboard and out of the way when not in use. A sliding seat enables the power of both legs to be utilized. The power of both legs greatly increases the force of the stroke and quickly brings the boat up to speed while the back and arms are used for the follow through.

Here is a brief description of a complete stroke. The scull enters the water at the “catch” and the legs smoothly begin to straighten, the arms are straight, the back forward. When the legs are halfway extended the back begins to straighten. Finally just as the legs fully extend the arms pull the last of the stroke, and lift the blades clear of the water, called the “release”. The rower uses his fingers to roll the “grip” and the blade is flattened or “feathered”, arms straightened and the return slide is commenced. The shaft of a sculling oar is “D” shaped. During the pull the flat side lies against the oarlock post and feathers flat as the grip is rolled for the return stroke. By adjusting the angle of the oarlock post the blade entry angle, called the “pitch”, can be adjusted slightly. This fine tunes the stroke for the depth of the blade. The benefits of slide seat rowing are many but the greatest is in the area of health and exercise. Almost all of the body’s muscles are utilized but without the high impact on specific joints encountered in activities such as tennis or jogging. Excessive knee strain is eliminated because both legs are used simultaneously. The calorie burn is also double that of jogging with a fraction of the stress. draft or money order. Smaller items are shipped through the mail or by courier. Unless specified we normally use UPS. Products shipped outside of Canada are exempt all Canadian taxes. Boats and accessories picked up directly from the factory are subject to provincial taxes (7% PST) and federal taxes (6% GST) Federal taxes may be claimed back by non-residents.

Boats for shipment offshore or in special circumstances are carefully packed and loaded into sturdy plywood crates. Crated boats are shipped by common freight carrier and are fully insured. Cross continent shipping takes about ten days. Worldwide orders are shipped by air cargo (within days) or by ship. (allow four to six weeks) Completed quotes on specific models include shipping costs via specified carrier.
