Many residents are advocating for the reopening of Alto Tunnel (www.openaltotunnel.org), which would create a flat, safe, ADA-accessible route for pedestrians and cyclists. The rehabilitated train tunnel would connect Mill Valley to Corte Madera, completing the North-South Greenway. A 2010 study indicated that compared to other routes that connect these areas, Alto Tunnel is the only path that will create a mode shift resulting in traffic reduction. A petition to reopen is available to sign online, and Friends of the Alto Tunnel are hopeful that the Board of Supervisors will soon authorize an environmental assessment to address concerns of those who live near the tunnel as well as the environmental impacts and benefits of the tunnel.
