Letter from Managing Director and CEO

What a thrilling season we’ve had thus far — and a stunning way to bring it home: Where Did We Sit on the Bus? exemplifies many facets of Marin Theatre Company’s mission. Brian Quijada’s play tells a culturally illuminating, relatable, and groundbreaking story; Satya Chávez’s immense talent creates an incomparable live experience each night; and Matt Dickson’s direction helps create a shape that feels both familiar and surprising.

With all of you here, joining as our audience, the work becomes more than just art — it becomes a bond for our community. Every individual who enters this theatre space, whether to stand on the stage or run the box office or sit in the seats, becomes both contributor and witness to the human experience.

As we continue our end-of-year campaign centered around our unique love for live theatre, 100 Reasons Why We Love Live Theatre, I’m reminded of Audra McDonald’s quote about the beauty and power of this art form: “Theatre is a safe place to take risks, where we can try on new ideas and new ways of thinking.”

We want to not only be the safe space but the brave space that Satya, Matt, Brian, and more artists can utilize to take artistic risks that activate all of us in our seats — and as we leave the theatre — to try on new ideas and new ways of thinking, much like those introduced by the character Bee Quijada and the clean and complex soundscape of Satya’s musical performance.

Bee Quijada’s journey begins with a question and ends with a promise to the future — a promise to tell future generations the truth of their origin so they can carry the story forward. In much the same way, the end of a theatre’s season is actually a beginning, and a promise to the future: this season is closing so we can create a new cycle of profound stories that need to be told. We can promise you cutting-edge and incomparable work; your support can make fulfilling this promise possible, so thank you for joining us in the theatre and being a part of our community. I hope to see you all return as subscribers for our 2023–2024 season as we carry new ideas forward. After all, the final performances of this season simply mark the beginning of the next — and a promise to continue telling our stories.
