Minneapolis, MN

New Construction/Mix-Use Mix-Use LHB Corp., a large architecture firm in Minnesota, contacted HArtman-Cox Architects —a previous firm I was part of— to be in charge of the schematic design and Design Development of an office building, which is part of a new commercial development taking place in Minneaopolis. I was involved in this project from beginning to end of out scope of work. I developed numerous renderings and was involved in creating the Sketchup model. I was the one in charge of coordinating closely with LHB Corp.’s BIM manager in the elaboration of the Revit model and file sharing necessary for the project.

IMF Bretton Woods Tennis Pavilion Germantown, MD

New Construction/Renovation Recreation The fundamental aspect of this project was to create a Tennis Clubhouse with very compact but pleasant amenities —including an exercise area— to serve the Bretton Woods and IMF community. To achieve this, we have made a comprehensive plan that was site-specific, compact, efficient and economical. From the beginning we saw on the site the main source of inspiration, gathering important information about the most prominent aspects of it, its topography, vantage points, and views and the sense for what makes this place special. I was involved from first meeting with the owner (IMF) and the contractor (Therrien Waddell). We were called to create a great space with a tight budget. I was the only person involved in 3d presentation drawings and the final contract documents with Revit Architecture, and thus the BIM person in charge of coordinating the model with structural and MEP engineers.

Oakwood School Annandale VA

Renovation/ Planning Pre K-8 Educational An on-going multi-year project to renovate, alter and provide a major addition to the Oakwood School in Annandale Virginia. The Oakwood School is a coed day school that serves grades Pre K through 8. The School provides a multisensory educational program where students with learning differences achieve their unique academic and social potential in a nurturing community environment. The school is located in a residential neighborhood and one of the existing buildings was a church. The church structure had previously been adapted as a school and currently serves as part of the school. As part of the scope of work, the design team—in which I was part of— proposed a Master Plan that included the renovations of many of the existing buildings and a new addition to house a gymnasium, classrooms, offices and a large multipurpose room. For the last 3 years I was able to be part of the design team. We came-up with a phasing system that would allow fund-raising and also school activities continue normally without the construction being an impediment. As the person with most knowledge on BIM technologies, I created, did quality control and coordinated with consutants throughout all the phases of the project, which is still in progress.

Gonzaga Jesuit Rectory Washington DC

Interior Renovation Residential The renovation of the historic Jesuit Rectory at Gonzaga College High School gave some experience on residentail in a different sense than usual, not multi or single-family, but in understanding a community of clergymen. The 5 story brick structure is an elegant example of well-crafted Victorian architecture brickwork with elegant interior rooms. The renovation turned the lower level into a Counseling and Spirituality Center and the upper floors were reconfigured to provide more amenable facilities for the residents, including ADA compliant bathrooms and new finishes throughout. Main features of the renovation include a New Chapel for the resident priests, new dining facilities and a completely renovated kitchen. Site work includes creating new entrances to the lower floors, new light wells and proper waterproofing for the building. I worked hand in hand with the project architect who mentored me throughout the whole project, from code analysis, to understanding waterproofing in historical buildings.





Sidgmore Pool Pavilion

Potomac, MD

Renovation Residential This enclosed pool pavilion is a simple modern glass and steel structure that compliments an elegant and traditional, English-style home. The existing residence, with its lovely steep slate roofs, stone walls and white aesthetic creates the perfect setting for this new modern addition. Veils of glass allow for astonishing views of the pond and the trees on the property while also providing indoor access to the existing pool house west of the pavilion. This great project was a colaboration between the design firm O’Neill Development, well-known for their residential artistry. I came in later in the development of this project, replacing one of the designers who was in an accident. I was able to join in, quickly know the project and adjust to the pace and the elements that are involved in the design and construction of a large single-family residence.

Montgomery County Humane Society

Civic/ Public The new Montgomery County Humane Society headquarters is located in the historic Aspen Hill Memorial Park in Montgomery County, MD. Two historic properties, listed with the Maryland Historic Trust, are intended to be rehabilitated and new buildings to house other programmatic elements for MCHS are arranged around an open landscaped courtyard. The new headquarters will serve MCHS to fulfill its mission to provide adoption, pet education and a community services clinic at the site. It will also be open for a number of community events and will provide an inviting park setting accessible to the public. The historic pet cemetery will be fully restored with new interpretive paths and columbarium added to enhance the historic cemetery and landscape grounds.

The study required assembling a team and working with a number of specialty consultants, including a traffic engineer, a land-use attorney, civil engineer and an archeology consultant. Multiple presentations to community groups, the county’s Historic Preservation Commission and the MNCPPC Board created a successful project that just received unanimous approval by MNCPPC.


Montgomery County Humane Society Campus Masterplan



William Penn House Washington, DC

Interior Renovation Hospitality The Friends Committee on National Legislation in Washington DC wanted to reconfigure the historic house to provide more amenable residential facilities for the transient residents that will be hosted at the facility. The four-story brick row house was originally designed by W.S. Plager and built in 1916 and is now part of a contributing set of buildings that mark the Capitol Hill Historic District. The renovation provided an ADA accessible first floor, including an ADA compliant bathroom and bedroom. The second floor was renovated to be used for gathering and social activities and the upper floors were furnished with new bathrooms, sleeping quarters and finishes throughout. I worked on the selection of finishes, including paint color for walls that resemble historic color, but with a touch of modernity. Rear yard work includes a new vegetative garden wall, new patio flooring and a deck under the existing rear porch structure, in which I was a big part on the development of the construction documents.

El Puerto de La Libertad in El Salvador is one of the best destinations in Central America for surfing, having great swells of waves and beautiful beaches. But there is a consistent tone within the visitors and residents’ comments about the city: they don’t feel as safe as they want to. The issue of insecurity and gang violence steadily increased after the Civil War in El Salvador ended in 1992. So, there have been different nation and city plans to mitigate the problem since then, but none has really aimed to inclusivity, most of them have been focused on fighting it with violence. My thesis seeks answers within architecture to help alleviate gang violence in the city of Puerto, through the design and development of a city master plan that connects different facilities centered in the farming, harvesting and use of bamboo for construction, furniture making and crafting. This will allow a boost in the town’s economy and the reconstruction of the social fabric. Finally joining the beauty of the blue of the ocean and the sky, with the the local materials and the hands of the members of the community for the design —and potentially building— of the Surfing Youth Center.

Bamboo skewers were used as a modeling material. Insulation foam resulted to be a perfect base to hold the skewers. Harvested bamboo from Bethesda was used to reproduce a full scale mock-up of the railing that would be in the project.

TUBE RIDING PATHWAY This pathway is a journey, from the welcoming area into the main areas of the school, preparatory to being introduced to the rising wave instruction room, where they see the ocean as the background. This pathway was inspired on the “tube” is formed by the water as the wave rises and prepares to whip its tail. This tube is what most surfers seek to ride where they’re completely embrace by the water and they caress the water as they surf through.

winery WINE MAKING BUILDING AND VINEYARD

Wine making is one of the biggest attractions in the State of California. Utah had a few wineries working in the last 10 years, but they were shut down. That is how it was decided to locate this new winery in the heart of the capital of winemaking in North America, Napa Valley. The first vines were introduced in the valley in the mid-late 19th century and from then, it produces some of the finest wines around the world. As the last Studio class for my Bachelor’s, I teamed up with Meng Li to produce the preliminar design of this hypothetical winery.
