Site & Issues Marketed for the underprivileged, hence the limited budgeting (approx IDR 50 million) Limited space, first phase particularly Health related issues in most existing settlements for the underprivileged In response to covid 19 : utilizing space for different purpose, eg. school and work from home The fading of solidarity values in modern settlements

How can the design improve every aspects of the occupants’ life?

Bumi Rairaka a relatively small house prototype that can accommodate 2 families without the compromise of living quality, “small yet versatile”

9

Bumi Rai+Raka // Competition

Fine line between public and private Rather than seeing it as an individual housing unit, the design consider all of the units as one whole that interacts with each other. Encouraging interactions between units, the design aims to create a lively and highly sociable environment.

Tepas Kamitran (sundanese) Terrace

Partnership

Every “Micro Cluster” is provided with “Tepas Kamitran”, an open space that can be used as communal activity area for 4 families who live in 2 neighbouring units.

Two units equals to one “Micro Cluster”

10

Fine line between the public and private The project aims to form close social bonds between each individual in a community, from daily communal activities to some more specific activities such as business partnerships

a. the gate acts a divider between units’ terrace to create a sense of privacy b. when opened, it can unify the two terrace, creating a spacious communal bonding area c. the spacious area can also be utilized as seating area for warung’s / kitchen customers d. it an also be used as a co-working space between the 2 units

1st Phase - 50 m2

Space Efficiency and Flexibility

Zoning in phase 1 is divided into private (Bedroom) and semi-private to public zones (Living Room & Terrace). Living room can be converted into a work or a spacious open area through its flexible furnitures. In phase 1, each family has only one shared bedroom, and so it is made to be flexible to be able to switch functions from a resting into a work area. Responding to the at home demands due to the pandemic, both work and school related activities can easily be carried out at the same time. (working - living room - public) (school activites - bedroom -private)

12

Space Efficiency and Flexibility 2nd Phase - 100 m2

To ensure optimum airflow and natural lighting, every room in each floor comes with a window. The void besides the stairwell enables light and air to reach the innermost parts of the bulding. In phase 2, the 2nd floor is comprised completely of private family areas. Parents and children now have their own room. The living room on the 2nd floor can be extended to the balcony, creating a spacious semi open space. This area can also accomodate school and studying activities for the kids during the day. on the 1st floor, the once private areas of bedrooms are converted into additional working and storage area. The majority of 1st floor can now be used as working space during the day, and family as well as dining space at night.

13

Bumi Rai+Raka // Competition

Budget and time efficiency Module Dimensions Every dimensions of the buildings are decided with the materials’ module sizes in mind. Using these prefabricated modular materials, the building process is faster, cheaper, and minimizes the waste of unused materials.

Knock-down system Each structural module, starting from the foundation, sloof, column, beam, and roof portal, is precisely fabricated so that it can be directly connected with nuts and bolts.

Zoning of Wet Areas Wet areas such as bathroom and kitchen are located at the outermost part of the building, as to shorten the pipe length. By doing so, spendings for pipes can be reduced, and it can also ease management process. 14

RESIDUE

Is there any good thing that can be salvaged in these difficult times? new relationships? or perhaps, new community?

Pandemic Residue : A Cure to Loneliness Amidst the Devastating Pandemic Project Status : Morph Archproject 2021 20 Shortlisted Projects (Individual Entry) Project Type : Residential Public Space Location : K e l a p a G a d i n g , No r t h Jakarta, IDN

16

The pandemic continues to haunt, creating a sense of loneliness. People begin to spend most of their time at home, away from the normal routines and community

Pandemic Residue

is a public space that promotes 2 main principles in its design, “Flexible space”, as well as “Interlacing & Interactive Programming” It is designed in attempt to find a solution to loneliness, while trying to regenerate close social bonds that is starting to disappear, so that at least this pandemic can leave a positive residue. 17

Pandemic Residue // Competition

Activities are limited to the house and its surroundings, but in modern housing that is increasingly individualistic in nature, the feeling of loneliness becomes stronger

Site : Taman Kelapa Puan, located in a modern housing complex in North Jakarta, is an area for residents to play and exercise but its use has become limited since the pandemic

There is another issue at site, namely the lack of variety in social interactions, and so the social bonds formed are becoming stagnant (interaction only with the same circle of people), whereas it would be nice if a communal area could create bonds in the whole community group, regardless of age.

18

Interlacing & Interactive Programming Design of programs and activity areas that encourage users to interact with each other, regardless of age, but still comply with health protocols. The kinds of interaction mentioned is not limited to close physical ones, but also interactions that occur from brief or fleeting moments (passing by, greetings) and also the presence of other users who are in the same space but are separated by distance horizontally or vertically.

Upper level The decking is designed to fit in with the existing trees, making sure to preserve as many trees as possible

Ground level The field spans from North to South to avoid glare. Outdoor fitness area and playground surrounding it are oriented towards the field. Ramps are incorporated at every height differences to facilitate the elderly and disabled. 1. Entrance / Exit 2. Stairs to upper level 3. Ramp to upper level 4. Public toilet 5. Service and storage

Together, but seperate things

doing

The feeling of familiarity towards other people that can be achieved, not only by direct contact or coversation, but also by feeling their constant presence as each person do their own separate thing in the same space, set apart by distace and boundaries.

22

23

Pandemic Residue // Competition

Flexible Space A flexible seating module system for the upper level that can respond to the ever changing conditions due to the uncertainty of the pandemic, to ensure that this communal area can be used at every stages of the pandemic, or even normal conditions, adjusting the modules with the latest health protocols. 1.5 by 1.5 meter modules on the upper level can be adjusted to be : • work / study area (solitary pod), • individual exercising area, • a continuous sitting area The use hinges with removable locks allows the module to be flexible according to the demands

24

"Making use of the current pandemic, by seeing it as a chance to create a highly social community. It is hoped that by the time the pandemic recedes, it will have created bonds between individuals, that looks back to the pandemic as a time they spent relying on each other, making it a memorable pandemic residue."

Site & Issue • Existing elements tend to be monotonously warm toned • Multiple columns located in the middle of the room • Entrances (A) not directly linked to the front desk (B), but instead located across the elevator (C) • Floor to ceiling openings (D) with views that aren’t quite enjoyable (car park & lot walls) 39

Making Our Own View

Responding to the issue of abundant openings without an attractive view, the main design concept tries to create its own view inside, while still utilizing natural lighting from the existing curtain walls, so that it can redirect guests’ attention to the view inside in the form of vegetation arrangements

Accentuating High Ceilings Maximizing the potential of high ceilings, with several vertical elements that gradually guide visitors’ eyes to travel upwards. Done by using vines along wooden sticks as trellis that rise from potted plants on the ground floor up to the top, greeted by ceiling installation of rattan lantern.

Seating Area (4&5) to regulate circulation,

directing incoming guests from the entrance (2) to the front desk (6). The existing entrances are kept the same, and circulation that connects the lobby with the Ocha Bella restaurant (14) is provided. The existing location for Front desk remains the same as to keep the connection with the front office (9) to ensure service effiiency.

Str uctural Column Integration

Flexible Seating Arrangements

Combining it with vegetation elements so that the column feels more integrated into the room’s program, even if its located right in the middle. In addition, it also emphasizes the circulation path.

Responding to the diversity of users in the city center, the area can be used as group, and individual seatings, depending on the users’ sitting orientation

42

maintaining some of the existing color and material, namely white, cream, and wood accented materials, but with the addition of other color accents

Splash Of Greens

The green from vegetations can have a calming effect, and will also freshen up the space. This is important because the color palette tends to be warm toned, so the green color can neutralize the space, giving it a pop of color, and give a fresh impression to the hotel lobby area.

Dark, and Contrasting Color Accents

The use of color accents that are more striking against the white of the room for the front desk area and also the elevator area to attract and direct guests

D irection al Lighting

The use of brighter light in the front desk area, using long strips of led lights so that guests, especially from the entrance, can immediately see the location of the front desk. The ceiling installation rattan lanterns are equipped with a softer lighting using LED bulbs, to capture the attention of guests without being too overwhelming.

Amphiteater Overlooking The Scenic Valley

There are several existing building masses that are integrated into the design, namely the restaurant as well as the pool and decking. All of these masses are connected by an amphitheater that is designed to face the scenic valley by utilizing the existing contours.

Serene Dining Experience Enveloped by Nature One of the main features in this design is the outdoor dining area that sits on top of a decking that is placed above the retention pond. Apart from being an atmosphere-forming element in the design, this retention pond also functions as a rainwater harvesting area that gradually channels the water into the main retention pond located in the lower valley. In the easternmost apart of the pond, a joglo is placed along with an extension stage that can be used as a performance area. 52

Starting from the ground floor with open facade, inviting pedestrians to enter, and being greeted by an open kitchen (1) and also outdoor sitting areas (2 & 3) that have a shorter occupancy. The open facade shows pedestrian traffic from the inside, thus creating a "moving" or dynamic atmosphere. Meanwhile as a supporting function, lies public restroom (4) and service area (5) on the ground floor. The sequence is followed by a ramp (6) to get to the top floor. Here, visitors are greeted by foliage greeneries that gets denser as they go up the ramp, building a calm atmosphere. Until finally stopping at the indoor sitting area (7), shrouded in a facade of foliage. Here, visitors welcomed by a sense of stillness, away from outside distractions.
