MARIPOSA PRIMEROS LECTORES SERIES

Reading comprehension improves drastically when students are able to experience and engage with culturally relevant books.

The Mariposa Primeros Lectores Series is an innovative, Dominican-centered approach specifically designed for new readers. Content that represents their own personally meaningful backgrounds promotes learning and achievement by centering their knowledge and everyday experiences in the classroom. After many years of searching for books where Dominican and Haitian children could see their language and culture represented, the Mariposa team got to work and created our own! The Mariposa Primeros Lectores series were written and designed by our team and illustrated by Mariposa program graduate, Detiny M. Using familiar words and images make them fun and easy to read as students see and read about the things they see in their daily lives.

The first edition of the book series includes 10 titles and a matching memory card set that is set to be distributed to local schools in our community and across the region in early 2022.

After two years, we were thrilled to reopen Cabarete Coffee Company in December 2021. Social ventures are an important part of the work we do at Mariposa. In addition to providing direct service to girls and their families, these income generating initiatives help make the organization more sustainable. Cabarete Coffee Company is a small coffee shop that serves as a training ground for our graduates interested in hospitality careers and an important gathering place for visitors to come in and learn more about the work that we do.

Our guests sip on organic coffee, enjoy good, locally grown food and learn about the importance of educating, employing and empowering girls. Cabarete Coffee is also where we are able to sell our handmade Upcycled products, t-shirts, books and other merchandise to help further our mission.

All of our clients can eat happily knowing that 100% of the profits of Cabarete Coffee go back directly into Mariposa programming. We hope that you will come visit us in Cabarete!

CABARETE: Responsible Tourism and Investment Guide is an annual publication put together by the Mariposa staff. The magazine is our largest local fundraiser in the Dominican Republic. Mariposa invites businesses to purchase advertising space and 100% of the sales go directly to support educational programs for girls. Distributed throughout hotels, restaurants and shops throughout Cabarete, the magazine is great exposure for local businesses that support our mission and a fantastic way for visitors to learn more about what we do.
