Blue Mountain Community Foundation

Director’s Report Donors give to the Blue Mountain Community Foundation out of a deep and abiding love for their community and an optimism for the future. The idea that a gift made today can help strengthen our community today and tomorrow motivates our donors, volunteers and staff. In addition, it is what drives our grantees. This Annual Report is a look back insofar as it reports on the year that has just ended. However, it also looks forward. Below is our Strategic Plan. We will engage our community in giving. We will remain a strong and effective organization that will grow stronger. We will work more closely with our donors and grantees. This Report also showcases how the Foundation thinks about its support for a Healthy Community, from Needs to Arts. We feature the wide array of people and organizations that make the Blue Mountain area a unique place, and the grants the Foundation has made to contribute to their progress. Our hope, as you read this Report, is not simply to take stock of the past twelve months of the Foundation’s work, but to inspire hope about the future of area communities and its people, who we are privileged to serve.

Strategic Plan: July 2012-June 2015 Mission Statement To help donors invest for a healthy community.

Blue Mountain Community Foundation

Strengthening Communities:

Highlighting Grantees by Impact! Area BLUE MOUNTAIN ARTISANS GUILD - POMEROY The Blue Mountain Artisans Guild (BMAG) prides itself on bringing out the artist in everyone. Located in downtown Pomeroy, BMAG is building a community where people of all ages can attend classes and workshops to broaden their artistic abilities. BMAG is open five days a week, offers after school programs along with Saturday classes for children. Classes and workshops are given throughout the year for both children and adults. BMAG also hosts four art shows per year. Grant support from Blue Mountain Community Foundation, other local foundations, as well as individual donors, allows BMAG to provide classes to children free of charge. BLUE MOUNTAIN LAND TRUST Blue Mountain Land Trust is dedicated to protecting the lands we love—working farms and forests, watershed, habitat, and scenic views—through voluntary partnerships with private landowners for future generations. The Land Trust’s “Learning on the Land” series is designed to engage community members in exploring our region and enjoying the natural resources and landscapes that we help conserve. 2012 events included a hike in Juniper Canyon; creekside exploration outside of Dayton with learning about crawdads and stream health; and a “Star-b-que” which included star gazing with an astronomer and his telescopes. BMCF has supported Blue Mountain Land Trust through its Discretionary Grants Program. Funds have been granted for general support of the organization and its activities. LILIE RICE CENTER The Lillie Rice Center (LRC) was founded in 1966 with the goal of creating a place where people with developmental disabilities could gain skills to help them lead productive lives. Almost fifty years later, LRC continues to offer support services and employment training for persons with disabilities in Walla Walla and the surrounding areas. Along with its employment agency, Blue Mountain Industries, the Center impacts over eighty developmentally disabled individuals each year. According to one program participant, “We get taught how to work better.” Additionally LRC provides physical and occupational therapy to children from birth to age three who have been diagnosed with disabilities and offers support to their families. LRC is the recipient of grants from several funds at BMCF, as well as grants from the BMCF Discretionary Grants Program. The Foundation also manages LRC’s endowment.

Annual Report 2012 YWCA MARIPOSA PROGRAM “When you invest in a girl, you are helping the next generation.” This emphatic statement by the YWCA’s Executive Director Anne-Marie Zell Schwerin echoes why investing in girls is what the Mariposa Program is all about. The Mariposa Program goal is to provide a safe and supportive space for Latina girls. Demographically, Latina girls are at a higher risk for suicide, substance abuse and domestic violence. The Mariposa Program aims to give Latina girls the support and encouragement they need free from peer pressure. Last year the program served over ninety 5th grade girls at Sharpstein, Blue Ridge, Green Park and Edison Elementary Schools in Walla Walla. BMCF has supported the Mariposa Program for several years through its Discretionary Grants Program.

TRILOGY RECOVERY COMMUNITY Trilogy’s mission is to assist young people as they attempt to stay clean and sober. Through encouragement and support, Trilogy creates a caring atmosphere where young people can feel safe and comfortable. Trilogy seeks to offer a safe haven for youth struggling with addiction by offering youth and family support groups at their facility on Poplar, as well as at Walla Walla High School and the Juvenile Justice Center. According to Jeff, a 17-year-old support group attendee, “Trilogy is a place where I find comfort, peace, trust and respect.” Trilogy has been the recipient of two BMCF grants from the First Fruits Fund which aims to encourage collaborative and innovative approaches to building self-sufficiency for the most underserved of our community.

WALLA WALLA COMMUNITY HOSPICE The mission of Walla Walla Community Hospice is to provide compassionate care to patients in the final stages of life and support for their caregivers. Grants from BMCF support Hospice’s programs, which include adult grief support services, counseling and workplace support groups. Another exceptional program is Camp Amanda, a three-day camp for grieving children. According to one camper, “Camp Amanda makes you feel more normal. It helps relieve your fears.” WW Community Hospice is the recipient of grants from several funds administered by BMCF, including the Clarence B. Smith and the Donald C. and Ruth F. Roff Funds, as well as the Walla Walla Community Hospice Endowment Fund. BLUE MOUNTAIN HUMANE SOCIETY For the past forty-five years the Blue Mountain Humane Society has been connecting Walla Walla residents with animals in need. According to Sara Archer, Humane Society Director, “We’re here for the animals, but the animals are here for the people.” This sentiment is echoed for anyone who gets a chance to visit the Blue Mountain Humane Society and see their goal in action: helping people adopt healthy animals. Healthy communities and healthy pets go hand in hand. The Humane Society is the beneficiary of several Designated Funds managed by BMCF as well as the Blue Mountain Humane Society Endowment Fund. BMCF has also awarded grants for general operating expenses through its Discretionary Grants Program for the purchase of supplies, vaccines, surgeries and help for pets with special needs.
