Internally, the AM manages the AE through training and development to ensure all information is shared within the team. It is the responsibility of the AM to ensure the AE understands the foundation of client servicing within Interactive Investor, the process and procedures and at the same time, is informed of active client statuses. Additionally, the AM is involved with creating and sending all communications between Interactive Investor and the client. Learning goals
Improve my English: speaking I can speak and write English well, but not perfectly. I want to enlarge my knowledge of advertising concepts. So as the internship progresses, I want to learn more of the ‘slang’ of a company and of course the inhabitants in Australia. I would like to use it for writing short or long copies. I can write documents etc. But I find it hard to write creative, like for a specific target group or something clever. So I would like to improve this. The last few months my speaking skills have improved so much. I’ve had English class since I was young and I listen to english music and TV everyday but if you’re never using it it’s sometimes hard to come up the words. In the beginning I was constantly looking for the right words but after a while when you get used to it everything gets so much easier because you use it here in your daily life: Speaking with my colleagues, at the shops, on the streets, when you’re going out and meet new people. Sometimes I didn’t even notice it anymore if I was talking English or Dutch. My writing has improved too, not so much because I had to write copies, but more of reading texts, improve those for websites and emails and emailing with my colleagues. And because of this I’ve learned heaps of new words. Not only terms they use at the office, but also common words they use in English that I was not yet aware of. Like the typical Australian word: Heaps. On the next page you can read a glossary of a few words I’ve picked up.

Learning goals
Execute concepts to working products At school we never really completed a product until the final end, so far that the product is ready for use. I’m curious about what’s all involved and how it will be received by the target group. The company is getting bigger because more and more people are becoming aware of the interactive reporting on the internet so the company gets often new clients. I can work on projects from the older clients, but also get involved with new clients. During my intership I’ve been involved with old and new clients which was a great experience, because you see the difference between how they handle the different clients. It was nice to work with older clients because they know what they want and what they expect of us. It also was very interesting to see how a company starts from scrats and let us brand them and they get really excited when they see what you can do for them. We also get feedback from the client, because we keep stats of how some products have been viewed by the targetgroup, which part has been read a lot and which they didn’t, which was the most interesting link etc. With this information we can improve the product again and take the feedback to a future project.
Contact with clients In school projects you meet the clients only a several times. On my previous internship I also had contact with clients, but only a quick phone call or e-mail to give some information. I want to be more involved with the clients, at meetings etc. I think this goal was harder to reach then expected because of the language difference. As I explained before my english speaking wasn’t that good in the beginning to talk to the clients, because I was stumbling a little bit and that wouldn’t be professional to the clients. But also because this is a business I don’t know anything about. Investor Relationship and the services they provide. So that would make it hard to talk to clients about the services and products. I did attend meetings with clients to talk about their company and what services we could provice for them.

Learn to use the interactive services they offer. They offer diffrent interactive services to the client. It will be interesting for me to explore these services and know how to use and apply them. These services contain: Online reporting solutions, online ir Services, interactive Ereports, shareholder engagement, investor relations websites, online IPO’s and M&A’s The interactive services I was working with daily were easy to learn and to apply to the reports. Which you can see in the products section. These are some examples, click on the images to see further.

How does II use interactive media and other media comparing to Dutch companies. Is the use of interactive media in an Australian company more, the same, or less than a company in Holland. Do they often make use of a specific media or all different types. Interactive Annual Reports Online annual reports are becoming more and more popular in Holland and also the trend to make the reports interactive is growing. I’ve done some research for interactive reports in Holland and the big difference I immediately saw was that there not fully interactive. Most of the reports have an Interactive PDF where they can navigate in the PDF by arrows and links in the table of content and the use of symbols as print, email, next-previous buttons, index page etc. There are some fully interactive reports which are similar to the software that II is using, the flashbook and the I-Interact software. But it seems it’s not as popular as in Australia, where when you google Interactive Annual Report you have immediately a lot more results and more fully interactive reports. Examples: ING Annual report Holland - Interactive PDF Dexia Annual report Holland - I-Interact Schiphol Annual Report Holland - Flash Other Media II uses for the rest media that are similar to the media we use in Holland like: Email Newsletters - Interactive Newsletters - Google - Sign Up - HTML Webcasts - Micro-sites - Podcasts, videos - Social Media : Content syndication, e.g. Twitter o Slideshare of presentations o YouTube, Flickr of property photos o RSS feeds of announcements

Client contact How does the company maintain the relationships with their clients, is the contact formal or informal. My predujices were already that Australian people are really friendly and always say ‘no worries’. Well, they are also like this in the business life. The contact with clients is really informal and they always start a phonecall with the question ‘How are you doing?’ and first have a conversation about how everything going in their life. I’ve noticed in my previous internship in Holland that they were informal but here it’s even more. I don’t know if it’s always like that or if that’s only in a small company. They keep in contact by e-mail, phone and even by mobile phone after office hours. So the contact is pretty close.
Daily Business: How gets a new project accepted, do they work on one project at the time, or all together. How do they work together, how are the roles. II gets more clients by the word of mouth, add, visiting and speaking on events and conferences like the AIRA (australasian investor relations association). They exchange businesscards and so the process starts by emailing/phoning if the potential client is interested in the services they offer, give them a quote and see if the clients wants to start a project with them. II works on more projects on the same time, some are constant (like the newsletters) and some are only once. The busiest periods are August, October and November because that’s the reporting season to make the annual reports. All the employees work close together because they all have a important role in the projects, one has close contact to the client, one manages the designs etc.

Anthrocell
Anthrocell is a starting Australian company, focusing on the research and development of novel expression systems for the production of human proteins. - Make a website to promote the work to-date in developing a new 21st Century platform for making medicines more efficacious. - Design a company logo, the businesscards and powerpointslides. First I started to research the biotechnology market to see how other companies present themselves online in this industry and use this inspiration to develop a styleguide. After the approval of the styleguide my colleague and me made a few mockups for the website, powerpoint slides and business cards. When that was all confirmed we finished it and putted the website online.
Reflection: This was a good learning experience, because this company started from scrats, they didn’t had a name, website, logo etc. So we branded the whole company. I think because they were new in the business they were very easy to please with all the designs we gave them but they didn’t really think about the time it takes to build the website. Because the original plan was to make a whole website with all the reports and research but because they were too late with delivering content it got cut back

APA Group
Client: Apa is a new client to interactive Investor. The APA Group is Australia’s leading gas transportation company APA manages and operates all its assets and also provides management and operation services to its energy investment, including gas distribution and transmission company. To keep their investors close they organized a investor site visit. Briefing: There are two targetgroups coming to this day: Investors and media and bankers. Both have different prices/dates and therefore there will be two designs. To invite the targetgroup and inform them about this day we are designing: - A eInvitation with a RSVP button - A website with an Interactive eCalendar SyncTM
Working Method:
The eInvitation includes a RSVP button and a link to the website that provides all the information about the trip. We did a brainstorm on how we wanted the website to look and what we wanted to include. We immediately came with the idea of a interactive ecalendar on the homepage for the visitor to sync the dates and important informtation with his outlook. I designed e a few mockups and after everything got approved I designed the eInvite and coded the website. When everything was done the eInvite got send out.
21
Products APA Group Reflection:
The designing part went very well because APA gave us a good briefing and their styleguide. But after the concept and the implementation stage they kept changing things. Suddenly they wanted two different websites because they didn’t want the other group to know about what the other group was going to do andpay. Also they wanted to change the content (menu, text &images) a lot of times for which I had to recode everything again. In the beginning my supervisor was really patience with them because they wanted to deliver a good job so they will recieve more projects in the future. But the problem eventually was that they were paying on a project base and it took more hours than eventually was planned. So on a certain point they had to pull the strings and discussed with APA that any further changes would be charged on a hourly base. They didn’t totally agree but finally they worked it out. For me the learning experience was that you have to make clear arrangements with the client in the beginning of a project about the hours you are going to spend and what the consequenses are when it takes longer then expected for the client and/or the company itself. Client: Belvoir St Theatre in Surry Hills, Sydney, is the home of Company B, one of Australia’s most respected theatre companies.
Briefing:
Working Method:
Every 2 weeks Belvoir and Bsharp send out an newsletter to their two targetgroups about their plays and actions. II makes the newsletter and sent this is in their emailsystem.
Collect al the material, information and images for the newsletter about the plays and put it all together in the newsletter template.
Reflection: It’s an easy thing to do but it’s nice that this is a client that is not in the industry of pipes etc. Is is interesting to read and in change of the work we do for them we get tickets to see the plays. The only problem I’ve experienced was that the email system where the template is made doesn’t always work properly and is full of bugs. An example is that when you send the newsletter out for a test suddenly some fonts are changed in the heading or a text changed to blue.

Client: Cellmid Limited (ASX:CDY) is a biotechnology company listed on the Australian Stock Exchange. Interactive Investor has been doing a couple of projects before with Cellmid, like the Interactive Annual Reports and now they want to rebrand. Briefing:
Cellmid is going to rebrand and wants the following things: - Revamp of their website - New design of the letterhead, powerpoint and newsletters - Interactive shareholderprice/ASX/news announcements and a flash header
Working Method: Cellmid wants to revamp their website and wants it more 3d, more of this time. Including a flash header on their homepage with photo’s of their company and a interactive ASX news annoucements. For this I first did some research for other websites that are in the biotechnology and have 3d style and looked up some flash headers. After that we made a few mockups to set the style and redesigned the whole website, letterhead, powerpoint and newsletter. Reflection: In this project I’ve learned more about working with Joomla. I’ve worked with this CMS application before but this time we made our own template. Also it was a good experience to make the other designs like the letterhead, newsletter and the PP slide because I’ve never done this before. All with al I’ve learned a lot of new things, especially to work with feedback from the client, they were precise but reasonable.

Briefing: Origin wants a sustainabilty report with a hybrid in the style of their previous reports. - Flash intro with the flash boxes next to it - Search function Working Method:
We looked at the previous hybrids of the report and from the raw file we adjust it to make in the newest one with the new images that were delivered.
Reflection: Although it was really easy because it’s exactly the same as the previous report, it was a firm client and very precise, which is good but on a certain moment it got a bit too far. She wanted the words starting with capitals, the next minute not, she changed the headings of the menu a couple of times and the images that got used in the flash. But in the end it’s what the client wants and they were happy with the end result.

Working Method: First we studied the report, to see how that looked like and to see how we could applied that to the design. After a few mockups we got some feedback from the client and we applies that to the design. Reflection: It was a bit hard to make it in the same style as the report becaue that is really colorfull, the client wanted that to apply it in the menu but it looked a bit like a colorbox. We also had some problems with the delivered materials, as the images and graphs because they were not in a good quality. So I think I’ve learned that you have to inform your clients about the use of images, that they need to be in a good quality.

Client: The Awards provide an opportunity for organisations to benchmark their reports against the ARA criteria. The Awards are open to all organisations that produce an annual report. The General Awards are a measure of the standard achieved – they are not a competition. The Report of the Year and Special Awards are competitive. Briefing: ARA assigned us a couple of companies who signed up to enter the Annual Report Awards. Our assignment is to analyse these reports by using the criteria that is provided by ARA. Working Method: You examine the report by using a document with a couple of questions for each different area, examples of those questions could be; Is the Report easily found and accessed via the corporate website? Is the navigation intuitive and easy to use?Can readers extract (copy and paste) information for their own use? For each area you give them points, with this way you can measure which reports are strong and which are weak on what point. Reflection: This was very usefull and interesting to do, because with this you also check out the competitors of II that provides Interactive Reporting. Most of the reports weren’t that good and so I’ve find out that II has a very powerfull way to display the reports on a interactive way.

Interactive Investor Self promotion
Interactive Investor also need so promote theirself, they do that by using ads, sending out invitations for the theatre to clients and ofcourse the most important thing; the website. I’ve been working on these tree things and the ad and the invitation were fun to do because it’s something different than webdesign. The revamp of the website is more diffucult though because they are really attached to the old design and it’s hard to change it then. We made already more than 10 mockups for a new website but nothing really seems to fit. My supervisor is thinking about to hand it out to a design agency but they have a new fresh look on it. Evaluation
In the beginning of my internship I didn’t know what to expect, ofcourse I had an idea but in practice it will always be different. Here you can read an evaluation of my internship on the base of different areas. The beginning: I find it always hard to come somewhere and just do my thing immediately, I am someone who first wants to analyse everything; see how everbody works, who has which roles, what does the company include, how do there previous projects look like etc. So I found it a bit hard to start on my first assignment and to give my opinion about certain things. Also because my English wasn’t that good in the beginning it was hard to express myself. But after a while when I bounded more with my colleagues I felt more comfortable to do my thing. Teamwork: The colleagues with who I had to work closely were Shirley and Ingrid, two girls that are the same age as I am. I had to work very close with Ingrid, who is the multimedia person in the company. I felt more comfortable to work on projects when I started to work together with her because she explained everything very good to me and learned me a lot about the applications as photoshop and illustrator and she was always prepared to help me with anything. My supervisor Shirley learned me more about the company and the market that they are in and the services they provide. I think the three of us formed a perfect team! We had a lot of fun but also worked hard when needed. I also learned more about the Chinese and Indonesian culture and I’ve learned them more about Holland and tried to teach them some Dutch. It was just really nice to work with them.
39 Learning Proces As time progressed I learned to manage my work and my time better. I’ve learned to work faster and not to stick too long on one concept but to think further. Also I’ve learned to complete my work more precise, to align everything, get rid of small mistakes etc. Ingrid has teached me the most, on design level. She always gave me good feedback on my designs and taught me to work faster with the different design programs. Shirley taught me more about handling the clients, just by watching her. It’s really amazing how patiently and friendly she stays when she is talking to a client who is giving her a hard time. Mentoring: I was the first intern at the company so me and my supervisor didn’t really know what to expect but it went very well. Shirley is really good at managing people and she really guided me well. She always explained projects very good to me and always had time to help me. When I was working on a project she always asked me if everything was going oke and every now and then she asked If I still was enjoying the internship, if there was anything else I wanted to do or learned about. Difficulties: The hardest part was sometimes the language, like I said before in the beginning I really had to search for the words, and still. So I thought it was a pitty that I couldn’t had contact with the clients myself. Further I don’t think there were any big difficulties, only some little problems in projects but my colleagues always helped me when I couldn’t figure it out.
40
Conclusion
My Retrospect If I look back on this periode, I am glad about what I’ve achieved.. The learning moments are actually too mouch to mention. I have really enjoyed my stay here. We always had a good time at the office and got along with everybody, we had fun but worked really hard too. I think this was possible because it’s a small office and you don’t see this kind of situations in a big office. So i’m glad i’ve worked here and experiened this kind of athmosphere. In terms of the future I think I could use a lot that I’ve learned in this internship, for example what I’ve learned about working methods, handling clients, setting up a quotes etc. I really think I’ve extand my skills and use this in the future by another company.
