[ senior thesis ]

LIVING, DINING & NURSES STATION

Over 80% do not seek treatment, these numbers increase by 20% yearly

goal: To create an ultimate healing environment for those who are suffering from depression and other mental disorders. This facility not only focuses on the design of the interior space, but also brings nature’s healing powers into the facility through biophilic design, horticulture therapy and therapeutic gardens. This will encourage patients, staff and family members to become more involved with nature around them while they are there. Most importantly, the patient’s recovery process will be faster and will transform their lives into the happiness they once felt.

1/10 Americans will suffer from depression during their lifetime 1 in 10 women will develop depression after having a baby Women are twice as likely to develop depression than men

concept word: sophrosyne [n] A healthy state of mind, characterized by self- control, moderation, and a deep understanding of one’s true self, and resulting in true happiness.

design connection:

>>

design concept: metamorphosis [n] The process of transformation from an immature form to an adult form in two or more distinct stages.

The word sophrosyne describes what the facility hopes to achieve with each patient. In order to do this, they may have to go through a major transformation of themselves to gain their happiness and freedom once again; just like a butterfly goes through the process of metamorphosis. A butterfly garden is the central focus of one of the three the courtyards, which will provide inspiration for patients during their stay. The design is based on the natural colors and materials found in nature’s beauty.

patient bedroom Having a large window with views of nature provide a comfortable and relaxing atmosphere for patients. Attached furniture and system alarms create safety for the nurses to monitor patients.

waiting room The use of natural wood, materials and nature inspired elements - plant wall, waterfall and flowers create a soothing environment that welcomes visitors and family.

<<

nurses station Having an open living and dining area with a nurses station is essential for optimal views of patient activity. A central nurses station is important for distributing medicine and monitoring patients.

dining area Having healthy dining options for patients teaches them how to live a healthy lifestyle. The ceiling terrace filled with plants creates an outside dining experience through the use of biophilic design.

Allowing patients to relax in the yoga and meditation room provides them with a natural therapy technique. Having nature present creates a faster healing process.

The design of this office was based on a ‘kaleidoscopic’ concept. The client wanted a more open work environment as well as a space that was unpredictable, yet adaptable, and a space that was able to change and transform to fit their particular needs. A kaleidoscope is constantly changing and transforming into unique colorful geometric patterns that are unpredictable, yet visually pleasing. Combining these characteristics as well as using vertical lines and radial configuration of the kaleidoscope, a final design was achieved.
