HYMN All creatures of our God and King, Lift up your voice and with us sing, Alleluia! Alleluia! Thou burning sun with golden beam, Thou silver moon with softer gleam! O praise Him! O praise Him! Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! Thou rushing wind that art so strong, Ye clouds that sail in heaven along, O praise Him! Alleluia! Thou rising moon, in praise rejoice, Ye lights of evening, find a voice! O praise Him! O praise Him! Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! Thou flowing water, pure and clear, Make music for thy Lord to hear, Alleluia! Alleluia! Thou fire so masterful and bright, That givest man both warmth and light. O praise Him! O praise Him! Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! Let all things their Creator bless, And worship Him in humbleness, Alleluia! Alleluia! Praise, praise the Father, praise the Son, And praise the Spirit, Three in One! O praise Him! O praise Him! Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! St Francis of Assissi (1182-1226) Tr William Draper (1855-1933) Tune: Lasst uns Erfreuen

WELCOME AND OPENING PRAYER The Revd Katherine Hedderly, Vicar of All Hallows by the Tower We meet here today to give thanks to God for the lives of those lost at sea, and to remember with affection all those who have no known grave but the sea whose memory we cherish. As we pray for their families and friends and all who still grieve their death, we pledge ourselves to work for greater safety in all seafaring and to support all who work to save and preserve human life.

We thank God for the work of the Maritime Foundation, and for all who have given so generously of their time and effort in founding the Memorial Book kept within this church. We remember those aboard the many naval and merchant ships tragically lost at sea in both World Wars, some of whose names are recorded in the Memorial Book. Especially this year we remember the 23 crew members who lost their lives when the tanker Maasgusar caught fire and sank in the Pacific, off the coast of Japan, in 1989, and Timothy House, a diver who was lost in the North Sea in 1973, who would have been 70 this year. We also remember that deaths at sea continue to occur almost daily, particularly amongst refugees trying to escape fear and persecution and migrants seeking a better life. We remember them all. Ever-living God, we remember today all those whom you have gathered into the peace of your presence. We hold before you those who have lost their lives at sea, and for whom there is no known grave; those whose memory we cherish, and those whose names we will never know. Enfold them in the arms of your mercy, in the blessed rest of everlasting peace, and in the glorious company of the saints in light. Amen. Please sit 2

READING Mark 4.35-41 read by Commander John Ludgate RD*, DL, RNR All stand HYMN Love divine, all loves excelling, joy of heaven, to earth come down, fix in us thy humble dwelling, all thy faithful mercies crown. Jesus, thou art all compassion, pure, unbounded love thou art; visit us with thy salvation, enter every trembling heart. Come, almighty to deliver, let us all thy life receive; suddenly return, and never, never more thy temples leave. Thee we would be always blessing, serve thee as thy hosts above, pray, and praise thee without ceasing, glory in thy perfect love. Finish then thy new creation; pure and spotless let us be; let us see thy great salvation perfectly restored in thee: changed from glory into glory, till in heaven we take our place, till we cast our crowns before thee, lost in wonder, love, and praise. Charles Wesley (1707-88) Tune: Blaenwern

HYMN Lord of all hopefulness, Lord of all joy, Whose trust, ever child-like, no cares can destroy, Be there at our waking, and give us, we pray, Your bliss in our hearts, Lord, at the break of the day. Lord of all eagerness, Lord of all faith, Whose strong hands were skilled at the plane and the lathe, Be there at our labours, and give us, we pray, Your strength in our hearts, Lord, at the noon of the day. Lord of all kindliness, Lord of all grace, Your hands swift to welcome, your arms to embrace, Be there at our homing, and give us, we pray, Your love in our hearts, Lord, at the eve of the day. Lord of all gentleness, Lord of all calm, Whose voice is contentment, whose presence is balm, Be there at our sleeping, and give us, we pray, Your peace in our hearts, Lord, at the end of the day. Jan Struther (1901-53) Tune: Slane

ACT OF COMMEMORATION A procession forms and moves to the front of the Nave where a sheaf of flowers is laid by the Memorial Book We give thanks for all those whose names are recorded in this Memorial Book. We keep their memory alive in our hearts and minds, and pledge to work for a more peaceful world. Amen. The British Trent bell will be rung in memory of all those lost at sea. The procession returns to the pews. 5

During the following hymn there will be a collection taken for the work of The Maritime Foundation HYMN Eternal Father, strong to save, Whose arm doth bind the restless wave, Who bidd’st the mighty ocean deep Its own appointed limits keep; O hear us when we cry to thee For those in peril on the sea. O Saviour, whose almighty word The winds and waves submissive heard, Who walkedst on the foaming deep, And calm amid its rage didst sleep: O hear us when we cry to thee For those in peril on the sea. O sacred Spirit, who didst brood Upon the chaos dark and rude, Who bad’st its angry tumult cease, And gavest light and life and peace O hear us when we cry to thee For those in peril on the sea. O Trinity of love and power, Our brethren shield in danger’s hour; From rock and tempest, fire and foe, Protect them whereso’er they go: And ever let there rise to thee Glad hymns of praise from land and sea. William Whiting (1825-1878) Tune: Melita

“For those in peril on the Sea” Over the centuries in both peace and war many men, women and children have died at sea. Most have no known grave or permanent memorial of their passing. The Memorial Book provides, without regard to creed or nationality, a memorial to loved ones who have died at sea so tragically and, where possible, records the circumstances. If you have a relative or friend who died in such circumstances, however long ago, and you would like to enter his or her name in the Memorial Book, please ask for an entry form. If there are any difficulties in completing the form, our historian will be pleased to help. A Remembrance Service is held each year for the families to commemorate those whose names have been entered in the Memorial Book. Details of the Service are announced in the press, and invitations are sent to the families and friends of those whose names have been entered in the Memorial Book. The Memorial Book is kept in the Mariners’ Chapel of All Hallows by the Tower Church on Tower Hill near the Pool of London. This is the central church of Toc H and has long been connected with the sea. A charge of £50 is made for placing each name in the Memorial Book. A handdrawn facsimile extract of the entry, suitable for mounting and framing, is also provided. Any surplus arising after costs have been met will be used by the Maritime Foundation for education and training purposes to reduce accidents and loss of life at sea. LOSTATSEA.ORG.UK As part of the development of the Memorial Book, the Maritime Foundation has undertaken the digitisation of all the entries in the book to enable future generations to access and discover some of the history behind each individual recorded there. Whilst the information entered in the Memorial Book is the basis for each online entry, the website can also include a longer description as well as images, documents and charts relating to the particular circumstances of loss and any historical context. We will be inviting as many of those families as possible who have relatives or friends already entered to contribute any information they feel should be recorded. It is important to keep the memory of those lost at sea alive and accessible, particularly to future generations. As the Lost At Sea website expands, it will be of interest not only to the families and friends, but also to historians, archivists and educationalists. Funds from the Lost At Sea Appeal have been used to launch the website and make a short film which can be viewed online, but further funding will be needed for future development, adding additional information and maintaining the website. To access the records online, please visit www.lostatsea.org.uk ~

YEARS AHEAD But years ahead, years ahead, Who shall honour our sailor-dead? For the wild North Sea, the bleak North Sea, Threshes and seethes so endlessly. Gathering foam and changing crest Heave and hurry, and knows no rest: How can they mark our sailor-dead In the years ahead? Guy N Pocock 9
