ore and more people are discovering cruise vacations. Cruise lines can’t seem to build new ships fast enough to meet the demand, and many are producing larger and more elaborate ships practically every year. Meanwhile, more smallship cruise lines have been appearing on the horizon, and unique cruise options like river cruising and expedition cruising are winning more and more fans. In short, there has never been a better time to cruise. Whether you’ve never cruised before, or are a repeat cruiser, the options are overwhelming. When it comes to having the best possible cruise, there is so much to consider … itinerary, the cruise line, activities, food, stateroom category, shore excursions and more. At Maritime Travel, we don’t take that decision lightly. Our national network of travel Advisors has been arranging thousands of cruise vacations since 1949. In fact, many of them have cruised on these recommended cruise lines, and have experienced these recommended itineraries first-hand. We have mined the depths of their knowledge and experience. The Cruise Q&A

IS CRUISING AN AFFORDABLE VACATION OPTION? Given that your cruise fare includes your stateroom accommodations, onboard activities and entertainment, most meals, plus transportation from port to port, it’s one of the best vacation values around. There are cruises to suit every personality and budget, and there’s a lot to be said for knowing what your vacation will cost you up front. Typically, your only extra expenses will be drinks, specialty restaurants, shore excursions and personal services such as spa treatments. These days, frequent cruise line promotions sometimes include things like drinks (beverage packages) and specialty restaurant dining. Your Maritime Travel Advisor has the scoop on all these promotions, so you won’t miss out.

HOW LONG ARE CRUISE VACATIONS? As long or as short as you want. Our friendly and knowledgeable travel Advisors have the skinny on top cruise line itineraries that range from three-day Caribbean getaways to three-month around-the-world extravaganzas. WHAT ABOUT DIFFERENT KINDS OF CRUISES? From small-ship river cruising and barging experiences to globe-trotting expeditions aboard massive floating hotels, there are cruises to suit your every whim. And with choices ranging from boutique, luxury cruises with exotic itineraries, to classic vessels evoking the elegant traditions of a time gone by, to huge, contemporary ships with a mind-boggling array of recreational facilities, the sky’s the limit when it comes to choosing your cruise style.

WHERE CAN I GO? Wherever you want! Cruise ships visit some 500 ports worldwide and there are very few destinations on the planet that are not accessible by water. Just check the Recommended Cruise Itineraries in this brochure for a sampling of some of the exciting choices available to you. ARE ALL CRUISE SHIPS ALIKE? Far from it. The top cruise lines ply the waterways with ships ranging from intimate and elegant yacht-style vessels, to mammoth ships stretching more than three football fields in length.

Ahoy! Here’s everything you’ve ever wondered about cruise vacations. WHAT’S AN AIR/SEA CRUISE PACKAGE? Air/sea vacation packages are an excellent value because they include, along with your cruise fare, free or reduced-cost airfare to and from the ship’s port of embarkation. These convenient money-saving options are available from most major cities in North America and include ground transport between the airport and the ship, as well as baggage handling. IS THERE A CHARGE FOR ENTERTAINMENT? On a cruise vacation, the entertainment is on the house. The shows are live, the films first-rate and there’s dancing, live entertainment and special events like Captain’s Cocktail Parties and talent shows. IS MOTION SICKNESS A PROBLEM? Rarely. Popular cruise ship itineraries ply the calmest waters on the planet. As well, stabilizers on modern ships and availability of advance weather information, have for the most part, reduced or eliminated motion discomfort. WILL I GET BORED OR FEEL CONFINED? Impossible! Being at sea gives you a feeling of total freedom that no land-based resort can offer. There’s loads of room on today’s modern cruise ships. In fact you’ll need a couple of days just to discover everything that’s on board – from the high-tech casino and broadway theatre venues to the fabulous haute cuisine eateries, to the sports courts and sports bars – never mind the pool, sauna and full-service European spa. Plus, you get the added excitement of exploring different ports of call, often a new one every day of the cruise. WHAT CAN I DO IN PORT? How much time do you have? You can explore on your own or take a guided tour (known as a shore excursion). Search ancient ruins or hunt for shopping bargains. Ride a raft over river rapids or climb a waterfall or pyramid. Follow the footsteps of history or the wake of a waterskiing boat. Sail, snorkel, or scuba dive … You get the picture. In short, cruising is the ultimate way to experience new adventures and try all the things you’ve dreamed of doing, while never having to pack or unpack! IS CRUISING FOR FAMILIES? Some 25 per cent of cruisers sail with children and a majority of cruise lines offer supervised, age-appropriate activities for toddlers, kids, ‘tweens and teens. If your children enjoy swimming, sports, games, movies and the adventure of discovering new places, then they’ll love cruising. You’ll find that they adapt to life on board with ease and that you won’t have to worry about what they’re up to every minute. I’M SINGLE. IS CRUISING FOR ME? Cruising is ideal for people travelling alone because it’s so easy to meet other people. In fact, most ships have parties for singles early in the cruise so you can get to know other guests right away. WHAT ABOUT DINING COMPANIONS – CAN I SIT WITH MY SPOUSE OR FRIENDS ONLY? Experienced cruisers are likely to say they prefer sitting at a table with several other diners – lifelong friend-ships have been formed that way. However, cruise lines are geared to accommodate each guest’s wishes and it’s possible to request a table for two or four.

IS THE FOOD REALLY AS GOOD AS I’VE HEARD? Everything you’ve heard about cruise ship dining is true. If you’ve ever wanted to experiment with a professionally prepared gourmet dish, you’re in the right place. Go ahead and order two entrees if you dare! But just because your cruise ship offers plenty of delicious food, doesn’t mean you’ll come home out of shape. You can choose vegetarian or health-conscious selections that are just as tasty as the regular menu. Best of all, you’ll never get a bill because your meals are all included! CAN I GET A SPECIAL DIET? Most ships can accommodate diet preferences or needs. You should make your request in advance, however, so be sure to let your Maritime Travel Advisor know of your needs. ARE THERE NON-SMOKING AREAS? Onboard smoking policies are changing. These can vary by cruise line. All dining rooms and designated public areas are smoke free, however restrictions for smoking on balconies and in other areas are being implemented. Check with your Maritime Travel Advisor regarding the individual cruise line’s policies. WHAT ABOUT TIPPING? Tipping is a matter of individual preference. A general rule of thumb is $3.50 to $5.00 per person per day for your cabin steward and dining room waiter and about half that for the dining room assistant. Other shipboard personnel can be tipped for special services at your discretion. Many cruise lines offer pre-paid tipping. As well, some cruise lines include tipping in the cruise fare. Some cruise lines also charge the gratuity at the end of the cruise directly to the shipboard account. Be sure to check with your travel Advisor about the options. WIFI ONBOARD Generally, cruise lines are moving toward having wireless Internet access available in all staterooms. However, this availability varies depending on the cruise line and the individual ship. Some cruise lines offer wireless internet for a fee, but in common areas only. Others provide it complimentary in all staterooms and common areas. Please check with your travel Advisor in advance. WHO SHOULD I SEE IF I HAVE QUESTIONS THAT HAVEN’T BEEN ANSWERED? Your friendly, knowledgeable Maritime Travel Advisor! In fact, you’ll find that many of our Advisors have actually been on the cruises they recommend, so they can advise you from personal experience. Bon Voyage!

Recommended Itineraries While choosing an itinerary can seem daunting, especially for firsttime cruisers, the good news is that the sheer variety of cruise experiences available means there really is an itinerary to fit every individual vacationer. Most importantly, the cruise itinerary should suit your vacation style. Do you enjoy fun in the sun, or history – or both? Would you rather spend lots of time at sea or are you energized by the idea of visiting a new port every day? Other things to consider are the length of time you want to devote to your holiday (cruises range in length from two-day, “cruise to nowhere” experiences to 100-day around-the-world odysseys) and whether you are prepared to fly or drive to the point of embarkation. With these considerations in mind, here’s an overview of some of our favorite cruise itineraries.

Best time to go! Some cruise destinations are better visited at certain times of year. This is not just because of the local climates and conditions, but also because of the availability of cruise ships in those regions. In short, it is important to know the optimal times to visit your desired destination. Often, the more ships cruising a particular itinerary, the better the pricing tends to be. There is also the issue of stateroom availability. Consult your Maritime Travel Advisor. Look for this symbol as a general guide for when to cruise where:

What kind of cruiser are you? While most anyone would enjoy any of the fabulous itineraries and destinations listed here, there are some itineraries better suited to first-time cruisers, others better suited to novice cruisers, and some that are ideal for seasoned cruise fans. WESTERN CARIBBEAN Discover miles of sugar-sand beaches, world-class diving and ancient Year Round Mayan ruins on a fabulous cruise to Mexico and the Caribbean islands. Western Caribbean itineraries typically range from four- to seven-night voyages from South Florida and San Juan. Highlights may include Grand Cayman, Grand Turk and Jamaica, as well as destinations along Mexico’s renowned Yucatan Peninsula. Key West, on Florida’s southernmost tip, is another increasingly popular stop.

My recent Western Caribbean cruise has enhanced my list of favorite destinations. The Itinerary was fantastic, each port of call offered fun, new experiences that were nothing short of amazing! In Cozumel I enjoyed a fascinating Island tour, and in Grand Cayman I took a visit to the turtle sanctuary, where I held baby sea turtles, and enjoyed a refreshing swim in the turtle lagoon alongside beautiful green sea turtles.” — Chrissy Rozon, Manager, Maritime Travel, Cornwall, ON

SOUTHERN CARIBBEAN With their rain forests, volcanoes, and elements of both West Indian and French heritages, the islands visited on a Southern Caribbean cruise are nothing short of exotic. Southern Caribbean itineraries typically range from eight- to 11-day voyages from San Juan, Puerto Rico and South Florida. Highlights include the tiny island nations of St. Lucia, Curacao, Dominica and Barbados.

“The islands on a Southern Caribbean cruise are just far enough south to guarantee beautiful warm, sunny days – just what the doctor ordered for a winter getaway. When I last did this itinerary with my husband our ports of call included St. Thomas, St. Maarten, Antigua, St. Lucia and Barbados – each distinctively different in its own way. I think the one thing I enjoy most about cruising is that you get to see many different destinations on one trip. In fact, I’ve already been back to most of the ports on this itinerary!” — Sheila Little, Maritime Travel Advisor, Belleville, ON

EASTERN CARIBBEAN For the sheer beauty of the beaches, the islands of the Eastern Caribbean and The Bahamas are unequalled. Almost every cruise line visits this region, with four- to seven-night voyages from South Florida stopping in at such ports as St. Thomas, St. Maarten, San Juan and Tortola, as well as The Bahamas. Winter is high season for Eastern Caribbean cruises.

Year Round

“Now I remember why cruising is my go-to vacation style. The beaches you encounter on an Eastern Caribbean itinerary are out of this world! The color of the water in Nassau is straight out of the movies – incredible – and all the other islands we visited are just so pretty – from St. Maarten to St.Thomas. It’s lovely to spend some time at sea as well to simply enjoy the beauty of the Caribbean from your balcony or the pool deck.” — Joanne McPhee, Maritime Travel Advisor, Truro, NS

SOUTH AMERICA For seasoned travellers in search of rugged natural beauty, intriguing cultures and hip, cosmopolitan cities, ports in Chile, Brazil, Argentina and points South offer up a cornucopia of adventures. Twelve- to 17-night voyages to the great cities of South America and Cape Horn are offered by many major cruise lines, including Holland America, Princess Cruises and Royal Caribbean. The highlights of this region are the Chilean Fjords, the Andes Mountains and the diverse history and culture throughout.

St. Thomas, US Virgin Islands

Needless to say, the highlight of a 10- to 14-night Panama cruise is the canal itself, along with the history, culture and natural splendour of Central America. Panama Canal cruises offer stops in both Central American and Caribbean ports and you can choose either a one-way sailing between Florida and the West Coast to do a full Panama Canal transit, or a roundtrip cruise for a partial crossing. More than 90 years after its completion, this link between two great oceans is as vital and vibrant as ever.

Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

MEXICAN RIVIERA

“I’ve cruised the Mexican Riviera many times. It’s a great getaway from Canada’s west coast, as it is just a short flight to Los Angeles and you can be on the ship and enjoying your vacation by noon. There are lots of sunny ports — Los Cabos, Puerto Vallarta, Mazatlan and more—and plenty of fun-filled excursions to enjoy, like deep sea fishing, golf and hiking.” — Jason Dirks, Maritime Travel Advisor, Calgary North, AB

“You can strike several destinations off your bucket list in style when you choose an itinerary that takes you through the Panama Canal! The canal itself is an awesome feat of modern engineering, of course, but you also get to experience other amazing destinations along the way like Chile and other islands and countries along the western coast of South America.” — Karen Copp, Maritime Travel Advisor, Kelowna, BC

As the fourth most popular cruise destination in the world, the Mexican Riviera is rapidly building a reputation as an alternative to the Caribbean. Cruises ranging from three to eight days take travellers to ports such as Acapulco, Monterrey and Cabo San Lucas. A year-round destination with balmy temperatures, the Mexican Riviera stretches for hundreds of miles along the Pacific Ocean. The majority of Mexican Riviera cruises depart from Los Angeles, although there are some sailings from San Diego and San Francisco.

MEDITERRANEAN

April –

October Believe it or not, a Mediterranean cruise can be one of the most affordable ways to explore the Old World – great news, since there’s so much to explore in Europe, whether you’re a first-timer or a repeat visitor. A typical 12-day Eastern Mediterranean itinerary includes stops in Greece, eastern Italy, Turkey and Croatia, offering a mix of history, culture, superb cuisine and fun in the sun. The eight major Hawaiian islands are all volcanic and each has its own distinct climate and attractions, an aspect that makes cruising here all the more appealing. TRANSATLANTIC

April –

December A transatlantic cruise is any sailing that crosses the Atlantic Ocean—often when cruise lines are re-positioning a ship from one region to another during the change of cruise seasons. For example, many ships sail the Caribbean in the winter months, then reposition to Europe for the summer (and vice versa). These repositioning cruises can offer amazing value, with itineraries including interesting ports of call such as the Azores, Barbados or Bermuda. It’s also possible to re-live the glory days of the traditional ocean liner aboard Cunard Line, which offers both eastbound and westbound transatlantic crossings year-round between Southampton and New York City.

“You can relive the glory days of ocean-liner crossings on a traditional transatlantic cruise, or opt for a sailing that takes you to lesser-known ports—all at a leisurely pace with lots of time at sea and often for less than you might expect. Transatlantic cruises incorporate lots of days at sea, offering a more relaxing vacation without back-to-back port stops. Best of all, you don’t have to deal with jet lag you get from flying across the Atlantic all at once!” — Laura Macdonald, Manager, Maritime Travel, Summerside, PE

RIVER CRUISING

EX

P E R I E N CE D

CU

LT U R A L

April – October

Paris, Vienna, Luxembourg – because so many European cities and towns were constructed along waterways, they were literally made to be accessible by river. Unlike traditional cruise ships (too large), flat-bottomed river cruise ships are uniquely designed to access every nook and cranny along the mighty rivers of Europe, such as the Rhine, the Danube or the Rhone, or even China’s Yangtzee River, Vietnam, Cambodia, India and more. River cruising means sailing directly to the heart of every destination and docking in the middle of town. In short, it means spending less time getting there – and more time being there. Most river ships accommodate between 150 and 300 guests. “I recently did a Prague to Budapest river cruise bookended by stopovers in both Prague and Amsterdam and I had a wonderful time. The level of personalized service and the quality of the dining is unparalleled, in my opinion. I loved the tailored shore excursions, which started the moment we sailed into the heart of each port of call along the river. This is the way to see Europe.” — Debbie Buck, Manager, Maritime Travel, Penticton, BC

October Intimate hotel-style barges accommodating no more than 18 guests are a unique and luxurious way to explore the canal systems of Europe. While France is perhaps the best-known region for these leisurely paced trips, you can also find canal trips in England, Scotland and beyond. These exclusive, floating inns are fully staffed and crewed and feature superb onboard cuisine highlighting fresh, local ingredients. Self-drive barge holidays, a more economical option, are also available in selected destinations.

“If you want to experience Europe from a completely unique perspective, then you have to try barging. The food is fabulous (you even have your own chef), the scenery is spectacular and the pace is so leisurely that you really get to experience the different places you visit. And if you want to captain the ship yourself – and do your own cooking – then self-drive canal boats like Locaboat are a fun alternative.” — Mel Stewart, Manager, Maritime Travel, Burnside, NS

EXPEDITION CRUISING

FI

Year

Round As the name implies, expedition cruising combines exploration and adventure, without sacrificing the creature comforts associated with traditional cruising. What sets expedition cruising apart from traditional cruising, however, is the time spent in port. On a traditional cruise ship, the experience is divided between shore excursions and onboard activities. Expedition cruises, however, are all about exploration and education. These ships are small, with shallow drafts, which enables them to inch closer to those less visited, out-of-the-way ports or scenic wonders, like the continent of Antarctica or the rugged Outports of Newfoundland. A seven-night expedition sailing – complete with shore excursions via Zodiac – is truly a unique experience.

“I can’t think of a more exciting way to explore interesting destinations like Belize and Central America, or even South America and Antarctica than on an expedition cruise. Expedition cruising is the ultimate adventure for both families and friends. It’s a wonderful combination of education and adventure.” — Toreen Flesher, Maritime Travel Advisor, Abbotsford, BC

They are great to work with and the barges only accommodate between six and 20 people, so it’s small group touring at its best!” — Shelley Millett, Manager, Maritime Travel, Park Lane, Halifax, NS

EXPEDITION CRUISES ADVENTURE CANADA EXPEDITIONS

Adventure Canada charters expedition ships on a seasonal basis. Ocean Endeavour has been the preferred vessel for summer Arctic expeditions since 2014. Expedition sailings to the Canadian Arctic are very focused on wildlife, nature and local culture. Life onboard is relaxed and friendly and the emphasis is on learning with lectures on interesting topics. Expect one Inside or two shore excursions by Zodiac each day.

“With a small ship (capacity: 192), this family-run cruise line delivers big adventures to remote wilderness areas in the heart of the Arctic, the Northwest Passage and Greenland. Clients love the informal onboard programming, which encourages lively interaction between expedition specialists and like-minded fellow passengers excited to share their experiences. This is expedition cruising at its best!” — Charlene Walker, Manager, Maritime Travel, Digby, NS

Tip

Adventure Canada offers close encounters with wildlife, along with unique exposure to Inuit culture and Canada’s maritime communities.

HURTIGRUTEN

Maritime Travel Perk: Up to $100 USD shore-excursion credit per person!

In lieu of casinos and organized activities, Mother Nature provides the entertainment aboard the Hurtigruten (Norwegian for “fast route”) fleet. The line is composed of 15 ships, most of which are committed year-round to Norwegian coastal itineraries. Life onboard is decidedly casual – a Hurtigruten cruise typically includes a mix of traditional cruisers along with passengers traveling point-to-point, some of whom may be ferrying their cars. Interaction with fellow travellers, the spectacular scenery and excellent enrichment programming are the main draws.

Tip

Norwegian city and town visits are close-up and personal; cargo handling at every port is a fun activity to observe.

“I just returned from an expedition cruise of Norway and Iceland with Hurtigruten and I had an amazing time! The scenery along Norway’s majestic coastline was out of this world and the shore excursions were so interesting. At the head of Oslo Fjord, we visited the country capital with its panoramic views and fascinating history. Then it was on to Kirkenes, close to Russia and Finland borders and known for its amazing views of the Aurora Borealis or Northern Lights. And that was just for starters! This itinerary is all about Alpine mountain peaks, Arctic fjords and tiny fishing villages.” — May Yuan, Maritime Travel Advisor, Toronto Financial District, ON

ONE OCEAN EXPEDITIONS

Committed to environmental and social responsibility, One Ocean Expeditions offers personalized marine experiences to the Antarctic Peninsula, South Georgia, the Falkland Islands, Svalbard, Greenland, the Canadian Arctic, Chile, South and Central America, Scotland, Iceland and the Faroe Islands. Large ships with fewer passengers offer excellent staff-to-passenger ratios.

“I’ve booked clients on an expedition cruise with One Ocean and they were absolutely thrilled with the experience. They had nothing but positive things to say about this line and its commitment to the health of the ocean and sustainable travel. They loved the included amenities like the photography advice and workshops and the onboard educational presentations. The service was wonderful, as was the onboard camaraderie.” — Anne Marie Kelly, Maritime Travel Advisor, Sunnyside Mall, Bedford, NS

QUARK EXPEDITIONS

Maritime Travel Perk: $250 USD per person to spend onboard! Envisioned as floating basecamps for exploring the most remote regions of the Arctic and Antarctica, the seven ships (five small expedition vessels and two icebreakers) of Quark Expeditions provide a casual and informal onboard ambiance, with a range of creature comforts (from basic to luxurious) depending on the ship you choose. This is a very destination-focused expedition line featuring lots of Zodiac excursions and talks by naturalists and other specialists.

“As a Certified Adventure Specialist, for me there’s nothing more fulfilling than to head out into the unknown in search of the final frontiers of our planet. And that’s exactly what Quark—the polar travel specialist — is all about. The Arctic holds that special allure and getting to know it on a bucket list expedition cruise is the ultimate adventure to my mind.” — Heather Dodge, Manager, Maritime Travel @ Hudson’s Bay, Mic Mac Mall, Dartmouth, NS

Maritime Travel perks listed are offered on select departure dates only, and are based on the category of stateroom booked. They were correct at time of printing, but are subject to change. Check with your Advisor for details.

A honeymoon cruise and a wedding, too! Say ‘I do’ to romantic cruising

NOT TOO LONG AGO, the idea of combining a honeymoon cruise with a shipboard wedding was the stuff of fantasy TV shows. Not any more. The demand for cruise ship and destination weddings has exploded. People are looking to get married in a beautiful location without all the hassles that come with planning a party for 300 of their closest acquaintances.

Most of the larger cruise lines now offer a full slate of services – including a wedding coordinator – to help you plan your shipboard or shoreside ceremony. Someone else will handle all the details, from the ceremony and reception right down to the spa appointments and tuxedo rental. Tying the knot at sea can also be great value. Wedding packages start at less than $1000, the cost of the food is included with the cruise, and you can have a cocktail reception before your meal. Then, off you sail into the sunset with your entire wedding party in tow! Married couples can also get in on the action with onboard renewal-ofvows ceremonies – a romantic option for celebrating a special anniversary. But no matter what kind of ceremony you have in mind, we recommend that you consult your Maritime Travel personal cruise consultant before planning your wedding at sea. Our cruise specialists will help you find the itinerary and wedding package that’s best for you and answer any questions you have about the ship.
