ADAPTIVE REUSE Former Slaughterhouse Conversion Location: Timisoara, Romania

The main purpose of this project is to create a Cultural Center, through the restoration and expansion of the former Slaughterhouse in Timisoara, which will revive the area socially and culturally. An important role in organizing the assembly will be the existing buildings on the site, historic monuments, which will be adapted to new functions.

SITE LOCATION The site is located near the city center in a residential area. Due to its location in the heart of the residential area Olimpia, the site has the potential to become the main cultural and social center for the surrounding community. The 40.000m2 site is unobstructed on the north and south side and it benefits from clear access points. The Slaughterhouse tower stands on a symmetry axis marked by the North road and Bihor Park in the South side.

SITE CONFIGURATION

MASSING

ADJUSTING

VISIBILITY

The site has the potential to expand the slaughterhouse on the south side.

Three main volumes are extruded and aligned on both axis in order tot define the built area from the park.

The volumes are adjusted in order to avoid blocking the facade on the south side of the site.

The visibility towards the tower is created by a large glass cutout in the Art Center volume.

SCHEME The idea of the project is to organize most of the functions underground, by using courtyards and skylights to offer them natural light in order to keep the historic buildings visible without affecting their integrity. Due to the size of the building as well as the site, the project had the potential to facilitate a wide range of social and cultural functions such as: Museum, Theatre, Library, Restaurant and Art Center. The site benefits from two entries, one in the historic museum and one in the newly proposed cultural center.

THE MUSEUM The museum is located in the old slaughterhouse and beneath it. The main halls are transformed into exhibition and interactive workshops for the visitors. The idea was to highlight the old brick structure of the building and reinforce it with a steel frame. The tower is used as an interactive historic museum, where people will be informed about the history of the slaughterhouse and the architect, through a series of projections and historic maps.

By lifting the volumes from the ground floor, the space can be used for a multifunctional exhibition.

The project corresponds to a current problem regarding degraded industrial heritage buildings with architectural value. To retain its historic value, the extension of the former slaughterhouse had to be discreet, without obstructing the facade. The solution was to create a building that is partially submerged underground along green courtyards that facilitate light to enter the building. The existance of Bihor Park on the South side of the building created the opportunity to extend and flow the green space area into the building.

The facades of the new center are treated with simplicity, with a series of voids and solids that complement the slaughterhouse brick facade. The former slaughterhouse is surrounded by two large water mirrors, which reflect and highlight the facade of the building. Green areas and courtyards animate and provide diversity for the cultural center. The presence of different types of courtyards along the building gives users different experiences, from small single storey courtyards to double storey ones.

A’

THE THEATRE The theatre is accessed from the south entrance, which has a large atrium that connects all the main functions of the building. It is positioned on the main symmetry axis of the tower, and acts as a central core for the building.

In order to adapt the theatre into the scheme and composition of the site, while keeping a low profile in order to avoid obstructing the historic facade, the shape was sloped, which facilitated the height for the stage tower, as well as an outdoor amphitheatre.

GOVAN BATH HOUSE Public Bath Location: Glasgow, United Kingdom

The main idea for the project was to create an iconic building with strong and clear lines reflected by the surface of water mirrors and the River Clyde. The presence of water around and inside the building makes a clear statement of the function and purpose of the project. The project also portrays the classical principles of roman bath houses, by developing the main pool areas along a central axis, which gives the interior a clear and logical sequence of spaces of different sizes and typologies.

SITE LOCATION The location for the bath house will be in the center of Govan, in a area which has the potential of being the main public square for the community. It has a beneficial relationship with the River Clyde and architectural significant context such as the old parish churches and the newly built Riverside Museum. The main acces view towards the bath house will be from this point between Linthouse Parish Church and Bank of Scotland building. The space between these two buildings is a small square, which acts as a main key point for the project. This area also offeres a clear view towards Riverside Museum.

MAIN AXIS

ADJUSTING THE FOOTPRINT

DEFINING THE LANDSCAPE

The first axis starts from the square in front of the parish church and the second one is a pathway along the river and the riverside housing area.

The footprint is adjusted accordingly by creating the main acces at the end of the first axis, and the pathway beneath the building along the second axis.

For the landscape proposal the main ideas was to divide it into clear areas for a public plaza, parking and green spaces.

SAUNA This area offeres six different types of steam rooms, from group to individual saunas.

TEMPLE BATH The temple bath is developed on multiple levels along a large vertical space

The skylight above the main pool area, frames the tower of the temple bath, as well as encouraging people to engage in a journey to reach the top of the temple bath. The interior feel of the building is influenced by the use of concrete, stone and water. These key elements along with different types of skylights gives the building a unique atmosphere, which can relate to work examples of Tadao Ando or Alvaro Siza.

RELAXATION POOL

OUTDOOR POOL

PROMENADE

The relaxation pool benefits from exterior views towards the River Clyde

The outdoor pool spans across the entire lenght of the building, being accesible from several different points.

The river promenade passes along the bath house, creating a connection with the nearby buildings.

STUDY MODEL Since the bath house was a project where I wanted to create a particular feel to it by using a balance between light and dark spaces, the study model was an opportinity to better understand how light affects the key areas of the bath house The skylights that protrude the building are positioned in way it highlights different elements and areas of the building.

The narrow skylights are placed above the main circulation paths, lighting them and creating a sense of direction for the interior space. The temple bath volume is surrounded on all sides by skylights, which flood the entrances with natural light. The tower of the temple bath provides a lookout point on all 4 sides, which provides a frame for different nearby buildings such as Govan Old Parish Church or the Riverside Museum.

A HOSPICE IN GOVAN Palliative Care Hospice Location: Glasgow, United Kingdom

Simplicity and dignity are the main focus points in this project. The building needs to be straightforward and easy to understand by its users. Hospices need to provide a clear and logical layout in order to function well, by reducing circulation and creating clear visibility throughout the building. Human dignity is a key factor for hospices as it needs to fulfill the requirements for each patient.

SITE LOCATION The site is located in Glasgow, along the River Clyde in Govan district. It was formerly a shipbuilding yard site from 1850 to 1960,when the industrialization of Govan started to develop. The position along the river bank offeres a place for a high value development, that can benefit the community. The entire docks site is currently undeveloped wasteland that has significant architectural context such as Zaha Hadid’s Riverside Musem and Glasgow Science Centre. It would be an ideal location for a hospice as the site offeres amazing views along the river, intimacy from Govan Centre.

SITE PROPOSAL The site has a long and narrow configuration, being surrounded by a residential area, an industrial hall and River Clyde.

CONNECTION The pathway along River Clyde can be extended along the outline of the site, creating a connection between the residential area and the docks site.

MAIN AXIS There are two focus points in the site: one is at the end of the River Clyde pathway and the other is the visual axis from Govan Subway Station.

MASSING The main building is positioned along the river bank , a chapel is positioned on the North side of the site, and a lookout point on the South.

ENCLOSING All three buildings are connected by a stone wall that encloses the entire composition and creates a route for pedestrians to follow.

FORM

RHYTHM

FUNCTION

The form of the building responds to the actual and historical context of Govan. The pitched roofs of the old Water Row was adapted in a modernistic approach by Zaha Hadid in the Riverside Museum.

To integrate the hospice into the surrounding context, a similar approach was taken by developing a series of pitched roofs of different sizes and orientation, creating rhythm and unity.

The shape of the spaces are directly influenced by their particular function. Regarding their function, use and intimacy, the spaces are adjusted to respond accordingly.

THE PATIENT BEDROOM Bedroom units are the most important part of a hospice and they need to provide patients comfort, utility, privacy and flexibility. The layout provides views to Clyde River, aswell as an exterior green courtyard where the patient can retreat and get in touch with nature. Each patient can adjust the level of privacy he needs by controling the screening system at the entry of the bedroom. This way he can choose whether to visualy engage with the other patients or not.

SOCIAL HOUSING Residential Area Development Location: Iasi, Romania

The social housing project was an opportunity to propose a new residential area in an underdeveloped part of the city. The composition of the project was focused on the idea of creating two twin residential buildings and a tower, which will form an interior green courtyard for the residents. The particularity of the project was to adapt the shape of the buildings to the sites configuration.

SITE LOCATION The location for the social housing project is at the outskirts of the city in an area which has the potential to regenerate the existing underdeveloped area. Due to the sites location in the city suburbs, surrounded by natural landscape, the project will need to adapt to its surroundings by using the sites slope and integrating the green areas within the project. The site benefits from direct road access on one of it sides, as well as great views towards the city.

COURTYARD

TERRACED

CONNECTIONS

GREEN AREAS

The main idea for the project composition was to create a courtyard that would offer a more private space for the complex.

The building will gradually rise and reach the top point with the residential tower. The main acces for the complex will be from the main street level.

The volume is reshaped to benefit from connections to its surroundings, while the central courtyard is elevated from the street level in order to create privacy.

The final result offers a good solution to the sites typology and surroundings by using the slope and the site shape to create a green social housing complex.

TYPICAL FLOOR PLAN E-1

TYPICAL FLOOR PLAN E-2

COMPOSITION The social housing complex consists of two mid-rise and one high-rise residential building. The main idea of this project was to create a courtyard that would be the social center for the complex. The courtyard has been lifted from the street level, thus providing intimacy and safety. On the street level the project offers commercial spaces, public alimentation, office spaces and a public plaza. Under the courtyard is accommodated the underground parking for the residential buildings.

The composition of the project is based on the sites shape, creating two twin angular buildings that encloses the courtyard, and one triangular tower that benefits from the amazing views down the hill. The complex responds to its surroundings,to the site’s shape and diferentiates the public, semi-public, and private areas.
