CONCEPT The whole design concept of the building was based on the idea to connect of man in the realm of nature. The entire place creates a holistic feel by connecting the user with nature through using organic material and the integration of the site. Throughout the two levels of building. The design works help to bring the calming environment with natural light washing the exposed walls and ceilings with a spectacular play of light and shadows. The main block disappears into the earth and is half submerged to connect to the isolating quality of the earth, with the light and air movement planned from a series of sunken courts. The approach to the main area slowly opens a plethora of spaces which are programmatically planned to suit the smooth spatial transitions of the guests.

CONCEPT The concept of the project is to create a structure that fits into existing conditions and established a relationship with surroundings elements – builds and nature. The already existing main part of the structure was preserving huge canon ball tree not just physically but also phenomenally in a way that it becomes part of the experience. The second important stand taken was to wrap most of the building with a thick layer of green along with a modern interpretation of traditional jail screen. Nuuk Psychiatric Clinic

INTRODUCTION CLIMATE

Client: Greenland Health Department Location: Nuuk, Greenland Partners: DIFK Dipl.-Ing. Florian Kosche AS & ÅF Engineering AS Area: 3,300 sqm Visuals: Luxigon, White Arkitekter

Greenland has an Arctic climate with average temperatures that do not exceed 10° C (50° F) in the warmest summer months. The air quality in Greenland is among the best in the world due to the country’s geographical position to the high north. The air is generally very dry in Greenland in relation to many other countries, and because of this low humidity the low temperatures do not feel as cold as you might expect.

SELECTION CRITERIA • • •

To understand the functionality To understand the spatial distribution To study What integrated elements of the building, in particular, aid in the process while fighting the prejudice and stigma of mental health issues?

CONCEPT The White Arkitekter design team chose to emphasize the beauty of Greenland’s natural landscape and create a tranquil atmosphere with a strong connection to the hospital’s surroundings. By analyzing and recognizing the impact of architecture on the hospital’s patients, the design team has attempted to create a calm, healing environment for its visitors. The main goal is to create a space that "Strikes The

Perfect Balance Between A Calm, Healing, And Trustworthy Atmosphere“ The clinic is composed of two stacked rectilinear volumes and have a perforated yellow facade, in keeping with other hospitals in the area that are traditionally painted the same shade. The structure will also be relatively low in height, in order to blend in amongst the small-scale buildings throughout Nuuk.
