Marja van Kampen Some years after graduating from art college I made the important decision to become a full-time painter and realized that there was no reason for me to stay in The Netherlands. Being attracted by the colours of the South, the light and its vegetation, I rented a house in a mountain village in the South of France, where I spent Summers and Autumns during the next few years, making a substantial body of work. But it was later when I travelled to India that I found the true inspiration for my paintings. Practising meditation on a daily base, I spent time in an ashram in the South of India. There I found a peaceful place, with warm rich colours, and an exotic people and culture which filled me with motivation.

Since then I have journeyed to India every year and have returned with a wealth of collected images, photographs and curiosities, using them as a spring board to achieve a communication through painting - creating a state of wonder and joy - beyond the immediate, not bound by any one place or time.
