An attitude to adventure

Born out of the true spirit of adventure, the Mera Peak jacket from Berghaus dares to reach beyond convention and explore new territory. This highly technical performance jacket uses GORE-TEX® Performance Shell and has been designed for the experienced all year-round mountaineer who, whatever the weather or terrain, can be found on or off the beaten track.

“It’s just over four years since I committed to avoiding the security of a salary and taking on my biggest adventure dreams. It has been a busy start – around the world against the clock for a new World Record of 194 days 17 hours and then pedaling from Alaska to Tierra del Fuego whilst summiting Denali and Aconcagua en route (the highest peaks in North and South America). Living and training in Scotland, I am very grateful for the friendship and support from the TISO’s team over the years.

• Full mountain hood with an innovative foldaway system which packs down neatly when not in use. • Water resistant zip backed by a unique internal double storm flap.

EQUIPPED WITH HIGH PERFORMANCE GORE-TEX® FABRICS

The deserts have been tough, the mountains tougher but I have learnt that the greatest uncertainty on expedition isn’t wild animals or the bitter cold, but the most unpredictable of elements: people. I must stress, the vast majority of people I have ever met are good and kind, and they form the heart of most great travels. I merely mention the unpredictable element of people to highlight the incredible dance of life that we are all a part of. Each one us has our own relationships and communities, motivations and insecurities, striving to justify existence. I have as many doubts as the next man and believe life’s happiness should not be dictated by your specific situation but how you decide to react to it. Your attitude is a personal choice – with that in mind dare to dream, dream to do and do not stop until the dream is real. ‘Bit cheesy Mark’ I may hear you say! Well, such a gut reaction is endemic in our society and is the greatest barrier to real enterprise. If you have the fire in your belly, whether for a weekend adventure or to take on the world, don’t let anyone tell you otherwise – ‘nuff said!”

• 2 layer GORE-TEX Performance Shell. Designed to provide breathable comfort and durable waterproof protection. ®

BUYER’S CHOICE

04

Our Buyers have carefully picked a great range of outdoor clothing for this coming winter to enable you to make the most out of the outdoors. Look out for our Buyer’s Choices in this brochure.

The real grunt work for the year was done in Weymouth throughout the winter months. The aim was to use my strength and conditioning programme to get up to fighting weight and to take advantage of the stronger winds in the winter to get some good hiking miles into my legs to improve my stamina. Despite the best efforts of mother-nature and the snow I think we achieved this pretty well. In January and February we disappeared across the Atlantic to Florida to experience some lighter winds and to compete in three training regattas. The focus for the regattas was starting towards the ends of the line. The trip was successful in that by the third regatta I was becoming confident at starting at the ends of the line. However it was also a frustrating trip as many times my starts were poor which put me on the back foot for the rest of the race. It was a good lesson in seeing the big picture and “putting the ego aside” to make the necessary progress towards my process goals. The Hyeres World cup event was a really important regatta in my programme as I had earmarked it as a practice peak for the summer. I went into the regatta as though it was the Worlds or Euros so I could see where any weaknesses were, that I could address them before the key events in the summer. I was so pleased after disappointing performances in my process regattas in America that I started extremely well at the port end which eventually led to a Silver medal after winning the medal race. High on the confidence from Hyeres I went into the Europeans in Estonia guns blazing. I started really well at both ends of the line, which allowed me to sail a really consistent regatta never dropping out of the top 3 all week. After a very nerve wracking final day I went away with another silver medal, the first major championship medal in Olympic sailing I’ve ever won! After the Euros I relocated back to Scotland as our World Championships were being held in Largs. This Worlds felt different to ones in the past as it was on ‘home waters’ (although when I did Scottish squads in Largs as a kid, I think I viewed wind shifts, current and topography just as baffling factors really!). Unfortunately Largs didn’t deliver very cooperative weather and only 6 Easterly races were sailed from a scheduled 12. I didn’t manage to perform on the first day, which meant I was chasing for the rest of the regatta, with only 6 races I just hadn’t given myself enough time to catch up. Although it was hugely frustrating to have preformed poorly it was an invaluable lesson in that you have to hit the first day of the regatta at full strength. The final regatta of the season was the Sail for Gold regatta in Weymouth. This provided an invaluable opportunity of racing an international fleet in the Olympic venue. Our team decided to run the regatta as a dress rehearsal for the Games and therefore selected an Olympic team within the team. I was really pleased to be part of that group and see first hand how the Olympic team works. It was real eye-opener to experience the extent of detailed preparations from the more experienced sailors, something that I hope to emulate this winter. Despite feeling good in the run up I struggled again to get in tune on the first day and put myself under a lot of pressure for the remainder of the regatta. I didn’t really feel I managed to play to my strengths and finished disappointingly. Although the result wasn’t what I wanted I have come away from the regatta having learnt an enormous amount and with clear objectives for the winter. After a long season I am really looking forward to having some time to reflect over the summer regattas and make a plan and some goals for next year. Next year the selection process really heats up and therefore the priority has to be on consistency over all the world cup events and a good performance at the Pre-Olympics is absolutely key. I am so excited to take on my weaknesses and turn them into strengths – the Olympics is in 744 days, so the pressure is on! Thank you Tiso for your ongoing support.

Sarah’S Inside Buyer Tips Written by Sarah McKie What is the most exciting brand for Autumn/winter 2010/11? Rab have a fantastic collection for AW10 with great design and colours in both their down and waterproof range. I’m really pleased to see a British brand going from strength to strength and our range depth reflects this for AW10.

06

What new products are there for Autumn/Winter 2010/11? The most exciting new technology for AW10 is the arrival of Omni-Heat from Columbia. It is a brand new fabric that helps to regulate your body temperature by reflecting and retaining the warmth your body generates while dissipating moisture and excess heat at the same time to keep you comfortable. There is a bit of buzz about this and I’m quite excited to see how customers react. What are the prominent colours for Autumn/Winter 2010/11? AW10 is all about bold, bright colours for both men and women. The predominant colour coming through for women are shades of purple and deep reds while blue and red are always popular for men.

01

What item is on your wish list? My wish list seems to grow larger every year but I think this year I will definitely be buying one of the new Icebreaker woollen coats, probably the Paramount Hood, and a Montane North Star down jacket. I have also fallen in love with the Rab Latok Alpine waterproof jacket. Have we added any New brands to our range for this Autumn/Winter 2010/11? We will be running Mammut clothing in 3 of our key stores (Rose Street, Glasgow Outdoor Experience and Perth Outdoor Experience) which I am really excited about as it is great kit with a true technical story to it.

• When leading a steep snow apron with no rock or ice feature appropriate for placing protection, then use a (deadman anchor), a flat metal plate with a 2m wire attached. Place the plate at the correct angle, clip a karabiner to the wire end and clip your rope. • In winter a pitch leader should always secure his ice tools either to the anchor or a safe position within reach of the stance • It is important to have a ledge well prepared at the stance for the leader and second to stand on, but a sufficient size to allow the rope to be flaked onto • When leading a long and complicated route always use runners regardless of pitch leader confidence. Runners allow the second to follow easily and protects the leader from falling • When two climbers are moving together sharing the same rope, climbing protection should be considered or natural rock should be used. If not it’s always best to stop and pitch the section • When abseiling always join two ropes together using a double overhand knot (avoid using a single overhand knot) • It is worth from the very beginning learning the correct way to use climbing axes. When buying an axe, it’s important how it feels in your hand. • Remember to always carry a pair of spare winter gloves – it’s all too easy to lose one or two on a route • Always use a double rope system for multi-pitch winter routes. • For ice routes use lighter ropes / twin line system – 8.2mm 50 or 60m ice line ropes. When falling on to ice screws, the thinner ropes stretch further which eases the peak force on to the ice surrounding the ice screw. This reduces the chance of your ice screw failing.

Albaron Jacket Men Lightweight and technical 3-layer GORE-TEX® top jacket for female mountaineers, suitable for a wide range of applications.

02

I always spend my X-mas camping and it’s always far more chilled out (in all senses of the word!) than a ‘normal’ one in the house. No worries about keeping the relatives happy for a whole day or keeping the carols down for the neighbours upstairs. (I do always sneak some tinsel and battery-operated fairy lights into the tent though, got to keep some traditional touches!)

01

Last year I decided that my culinary challenge of the year was going to be cooking a ‘traditional’ X-mas dinner while away, instead of the normal ‘pasta n sauce’! Although as the date grew closer the temperature dropped ever further and the snow got deeper. Hmm, was I being a bit over-ambitious maybe? Nah! Primus Omni fuel stove £135 Vango Cook kit £17

03 Firstly; Location, location! Tent pitched not far from Bridge of Orchy with clear blue skies and two feet of snow around it, heavenly. With some careful ingredient selection and a little planning the meal was a grand success. The concept of cooking a full turkey on a camping stove was quite daunting for a first attempt, so we had compromised and prepared stuffed turkey breasts wrapped in bacon to be simmered in individual foil parcels. “That was SIMMER, not boil dry!” said my boyfriend as I tried to sneakily create a sauna in our tent to get some extra heat. In my defence it was really quite chilly, I had already frozen one bottle solid by leaving it sitting at the edge of the tent. Mental note; keep everything off the ground! A real mini X-mas pudding with (mostly un-frozen) brandy butter was devoured in a matter of seconds (‘it would have got cold’ we claimed as we tried to excuse our speed-eating afterwards). Mulled wine was a bit more of an adventure as the pan tried to take a nosedive off the stove at a crucial moment! ‘No, no! I’ve got it… Argh, it’s hot! Oops…(hold breath)…that’s it.’ Phew, only spilled a half cup. Can’t have it all go smoothly can you? In retrospect this was a most ridiculous treat and involved a bit of extra work, but sitting looking up at the stars on a perfect X-mas evening celebrating a successful ‘traditional’ (well, almost…) X-mas Dinner, why would you want to be anywhere else?

Where it originates and what it stands for? Rab® comes from Rab Carrington, an iconic climber, mountaineer and entrepreneur who founded the company over 30 years ago in Sheffield. Rab started to make his own down filled sleeping bags and clothing in the 70’s because he couldn’t find what he needed at the time. He set up Rab® the company in 1981 to design and manufacture the world’s finest down clothing and sleeping bags. From its earliest days, Rab created a reputation for producing garments that are truly for ‘the most extreme conditions in the world’ and for searching out the finest technical fabrics to use in its designs. Rab® clothing stands among the most technical and innovative on the market, designed to meet the exacting demands of the Scottish mountains that remain the inspiration and testing ground for many of its products. The Rab® brand continues to be run by a very dedicated team of outdoors people (many climbers and mountaineers themselves) and all products are tested in extreme environments by our team of mountain athletes. What do you consider to be the must have all round piece from Rab? That’s about the hardest question you can ask me and to pick just one is virtually impossible! The Infinity Jacket (new for this winter) is an awesome piece of kit. It is filled with top quality down and uses Pertex Quantum® GL for the shell which balances extreme lightness with high tensile strength. It is very warm for its weight and packs down small. Another fantastic piece of kit is the Microlight Alpine. Great colours, a fantastic fit... again using top quality down and a Pertex® shell, so again it’s lightweight and packable. I have to include a Primaloft® piece of gear and love my Generator Vest... I am also attached to my Polartec® Shadow Hoody. I’ve cheated haven’t I... I must admit there are still many other pieces that I would recommend and I think Tiso has most of them! Vapour-rise has to be on everyone’s kit list as does an eVent® shell... ok, I’ll stop now! What can we expect to see from Rab in the next few years? Expect to see fantastic new styles and stunning colours as well as technological innovations (in true Rab style) that I can’t tell you about in any detail just yet. The way that we communicate with our customers will become more interesting and interactive making use of new media on all levels... and that’s just the start so watch this space!

Adrian’s Favourites

1. A new brand to Tiso, Climbing Technology offers some great value winter mountaineering equipment. This brand based in Italy has however been around for a long time making gear for other manufactures, so it does come with a wealth of experience in this field. The new Alpin tour axe is a great winter walkers/ mountaineer’s axe at a very reasonable price – only £59. The axe has a really thick head that makes it easier to arrest your fall should you slip and has a slightly curved shaft that improves its handling on steep snow. 2. The perfect partner for the Alpine Tour Axe is the Climbing Technology Nuptse semi auto 12 point crampon. At £85 this crampon is affordable and is around £40 less than the nearest equivalent from other brands. This is a great semi-step in crampon for winter walking/ mountaineering. 3. A good quality rucscac is always key for winter adventures. This winter I am recommending The Mammut Trion Guide 35 which is a really good robust winter walking/mountaineering rucsac for those arduous winter forays . The bag can be stripped down for serious ascents when every gram counts or left as standard with all the usual features of a mountaineering pack. The bag is priced at £125, colour: smoke.

Bruce Hay, Shop Manager, Ratho Black Diamond Vipers – From Clueless to Leashless When I was asked to write a piece on mountaineering equipment I couldn’t decide between my Black Diamond Vipers and a seemingly boring size 9 Rockcentric. The hex might seem a strange choice but I bought three of them last winter, two left behind in Glencoe rescuing semi-conscious climbing partners. I decided on the axes – there’s only so much you can write about hexes. Vipers were my first pair of curved technical ice axes. Before them I’d been of the traditional school; straight axes and classic gullies. More thump, smash, heave than hit, stick, move. I’ve got to admit, I was pretty nervous buying them. Did I really need such glamorous, anodised ice tools? How on earth do you hammer in pegs with them? Do I have the substance to match their style? So the axes were bought and the leashes removed – I was going leashless. Well, sort of, a lanyard would prevent me throwing them away altogether. Conditions last winter were amazing; Beinn Udlaidh, Creag Meagaidh, The Ben, The Coe and even the reluctant Eas Anie came in. I managed my fair share with blue-sky days in Coire Daimh and on The Wand, ticking off classic grade VIs. I even managed a couple of Vs. Did the axes help? Without doubt! Perhaps not quite hit, stick, move but leashless was a revelation, so much easier to place gear and get into a rhythm. I can’t imagine being 20 feet above an ice screw holding onto Vertiges. The axes are not so glam now, scuffed and scraped from bashing gear and mixed pitches but they are still brilliant. These were definitely my purchase of the season! Here’s a snapshot of what some of our staff get up to out there when they are not busy working... they tell us about how a piece of kit helped them through their most memorable winter adventure...

my winter adventure

Calum White, Shop Manager, Inverness Conquering Denali A few years ago I was lucky enough to reach the summit of the highest mountain in North America, Denali, “The High One”, or Mount McKinley as many people still prefer to know it by. Rising to an altitude of 20,320ft and lying just south of the Arctic Circle it forms the highest point of the Alaska Range, and is arguably the coldest mountain on earth. In no small part the role my boots played was critical to my success, a pair of Scarpa Phantom 8000 boots, they protected and insulated my feet from the low temperatures experienced. Keeping ones feet both warm and dry their performance allowed me to concentrate on other aspects of the task in hand. They didn’t freeze or harden as a leather pair would do and they were also light, an important factor if you’re going to be wearing them day after day for between two or three weeks! The importance of looking after the extremities of the body in such a harsh environment cannot be understated and the chance of getting frostbite is a very serious possibility. Each night as we prepared to get ready to go to sleep, we would go through the same routine of checking our feet for signs of bruising or numbness, drying them and then spending several minutes rubbing them with our hands to try and get some circulation back into them. One member of our party, on the day of our summit attempt, was taken back down to a lower camp after finally admitting that he couldn’t feel his toes, he was eventually flown off the mountain and hospitalised.

Standing on the summit it didn’t take long for us to realise just how the cold can get a grip without you realising it, having taken off my thick insulated climbing mitts and now just wearing thin glove liners to allow me to take some photographs, I got frost nip in two of my fingertips. Frost nip is the first stage of frostbite, further exposure to cold would cause potentially lasting damage to skin and tissue. My feet however came through the trip unscathed, testament to my boots seeing me up the mountain and safely down again. Featured product: Scarpa | Phantom 8000 | £599 We’ve got a good range of expedition boots that come in all price points and sizes. Ask instore for more details or shop online at tiso.com

Ciaran MacKechnie, Accounts Department, Head Office, Edinburgh Winter Wonderland

I am a bit of a novice when it comes to spending days in the hills, so I didn’t really know what to expect when a friend at Tiso invited me on a winter trip to Sutherland at the end of November 2008. We left Edinburgh early and eventually slid into an icy parking space outside an isolated inn after midday. Distracted by the stunning snowy moorland sparkling in the sun all around us, I tried to focus on getting the gear packed. There were supposed to be four of us going, but two had to drop out. So we only took half the beer for two of us. But I was assured that we would need all the whisky, coal and logs. Not the lightest stuff to add to a full rucksack. I could just about get my pack onto my back and still walk, so we naturally popped into the pub for a wee beer before the heavily laden 10km trudge through the snow to our first night’s stop. The spectacular snowscape was no longer keeping me fully preoccupied, as the uncomfortable weight of my overloaded pack began to cloud my consciousness. Despite the freezing cold, I was now really sweating. My amazing new Montane Extreme Smock was taking the perspiration away quickly, which was vital when we finally stopped for a breather. I stayed warm enough despite the sudden drop in temperature as we stopped moving and simultaneously lost the faint heat of the setting winter sun. The struggle to carry all that fuel was well worth it later when sitting by a roaring fire in a bothy eating home-made beef stew with a drink or two. I slept through the minus 12°C night in only a minus 10 sleeping bag. The next day we were treated to an extraordinary view from our first summit as the cloud momentarily cleared and the vast peat bogs below were briefly revealed. The second summit a few hours later was utterly different. Howling wind and a descending blizzard suddenly reduced the visibility to a hand’s reach. We rushed off the hill by head-torch into the glen where the snow fell gently in soft thick flakes as we headed for shelter and warmth. We didn’t see anyone for the whole 3 days and the peace was incredible. Some deer and a few birds (unidentifiable in the winter dusk) were the only creatures we saw. Even the burns and rivers were nearly silent under ice and snow. The value of knowing what you are doing and having some really good equipment made an impression on me. But what really inspired me was the beauty of the space. Winter wonderland! Featured product: Montane | Extreme Smock | £99

Graeme Beveridge, Sales Assistant, Buchanan St, Glasgow Rucsac to the Rescue! As a relatively new and enthusiastic hill walker, the thought of winter walking was always a daunting but an exciting prospect. One of the biggest tests was learning about all the new kit I’d have to use, and learning to carry it, along with all the extra clothing and provisions needed due to the colder conditions. I wanted to cut down weight where I could so I packed my gear into the Berghaus Arête 45 rucksack. It has a very simple design, is very lightweight and is also big enough for a day in the hills carrying the extra winter kit. My first winter walk took me to An Caisteal and Beinn a Chroin near Crianlarich. We set off in the evening to find a suitable camp, and awoke to calm but snowy conditions. I was surprised how easy tackling steep slopes in snow was, it almost seemed easier than walking up a dry uneven hillside at times, just focusing on planting my crampon spikes into step after step of virgin snow. It was a invigorating experience, giving me a true sense of wild winter walking. It was, of course, physically tough and I was aware a slip could be nasty, but it stimulated a yearning to explore the Scottish hills in winter again and again and all my worries of inexperience disappearing into pure enjoyment. I was aware that the daylight would be short so I made sure I carried my Petzl E-lite head torch. Weighing practically nothing and stored in its own waterproof container it could have been easily forgotten about in my bag. However the torch would have proved essential had my day for any reason gone on longer than expected! Featured product: Berghaus | 45 Arete rucsac | £65

Tom Bell, Sales Assistant, Aberdeen Lesson(s) Learned On a Bouldering trip to Brin Rock in late March 2009, the piece of kit that really worked for me was the Mountain Hardwear Lamina 20 sleeping bag. On packing for this trip I had left it to my brother to bring along a suitable tent, however he selected a £20 tent purchased 10 yrs previously. On our first evening, at Loch Duntelchaig, I was not relishing the prospect of climbing into our “tent”. The temperature dropped to -5°C and the fire we had been unsuccessfully trying to get going all evening died.

Thankfully once I’d climbed into my bag I was warm, and comfortable enough to fall asleep. I realised the big advantage of synthetic bags, when I woke in a puddle of water at 3am (our tent having been partially blown apart by the storm outside, and letting in water.) Although I was not comfortable, I was warm. Next day I was not up for Bouldering in the snow with the other guys, so instead I had a kip in the car. Climbing into my sleeping bag and cranking the heating up I was able to catch up on some sleep. I woke up, the bag was drying nicely, and I was refreshed enough to head back to Aberdeen. Lessons learned: 1) Don’t assume your brother has any common sense. 2) Check all the packed kit yourself. 3) The lamina 20 is a great piece of kit, even for poorly planned winter trips.
