CAST IRON

Cast iron litter bins are among the most ornate items of street furniture available. Strong enough to withstand daily use, they are ideal for strengthening corporate identity and reinforcing an area’s heritage. The Covent Garden range has been supplied nationwide and is the most popular style for high street locations. Based on the original post box design, the bins are available as circular, square and octagonal units, with varying capacities. The side opening bins are fitted with slam lock doors which are operated by a simple key.

Cast Iron Litter Bins

All Furnitubes’ free standing litter bins have bases which are pre-drilled to allow ground fixing. Cast litter bins are painted and highlighted as standard. Alternatively, they can be supplied in a primed condition for painting on-site, minimising the risk of damage to the paint during delivery and installation.

‘Litter’ panels and Rings on Furnitubes cast iron bins can be highlighted to complement existing items of street furniture. Highlighting is done manually to ensure the utmost quality. For more information see page 339.

PLAQUES FOR LITTER BINS

In addition to highlighting, Furnitubes are able to produce aluminium plaques to our customers’ individual designs, as shown right. A photo-etching process is used to produce a raised twodimensional replica of flat artwork to create the pattern from which the plaque is cast, as shown left.

BOSTON, JUBILEE & PORTMAN

The Portman, Jubilee and Boston litter bins are ideal for modern areas, such as rail stations, shopping centres and industrial estates, that require harmonising designs that are long lasting and robust. The Boston all-steel litter bin offers high capacity and strength for modern environments. The nylon plastic coated frame is ideal for resisting small knocks and scratches, making it superior to standard painted bins.

Timber slatted bins are an economical choice due to their simple construction. Widely specified for use in schools, parks, playgrounds, etc, the pleasing design means that the litter baskets complement both rural and urban environments. Furnitubes uses only the highest quality timber in the construction of the range and each bin is supplied with a galvanised sheet metal liner. For a small charge, a security chain can be attached to the liner to prevent theft and vandalism; the chain loops inside the basket and is concealed by the timber slats.

Concrete litter bins are solid and durable, combining the benefits of low maintenance and replacement costs.

Drainage holes are provided through the base of each unit and these can be used for permanent ground fixing if required. Additional holes can be added upon request. All pre-cast concrete litter bins are supplied complete with a plasticised wire basket of robust construction and features a sheet metal base to prevent the loss of litter through the wire mesh. DOG WASTE Dog waste is one of the main complaints of those who use both public footpaths and recreational areas such as parks and children’s playgrounds. Dog waste is not only an ugly menace but a serious health hazard and it is sensible to promote, wherever possible, the use of dog bins.

The Boxer and Pedigree are robust, appealing and practical cast iron dog waste bins designed to complement heritage areas. These bins have a generous capacity. The Pedigree bin also has a hook onto which the dog’s lead may be hung while the bin is being opened and closed.

Frequently Asked Questions: 2007 Smoking Ban Introduction to the ban Summer 2007 saw a total ban on smoking in all enclosed public spaces in the UK. The aim of the ban is to create smoke-free places and to protect workers and the public from the harmful effects of passive or secondary smoke. It is now against the law to smoke in virtually all ‘enclosed’ and ‘substantially enclosed’ public places and work places.

Cigarette Ash Waste Bins

Which places must be smoke-free? The ban affects most public premises, including restaurants, pubs, bars, shops, cinemas, shopping centres, leisure centres, offices, factories and other enclosed work places and public transport. No-smoking signs must be displayed in all smoke-free premises and vehicles. Staff smoking rooms and indoor smoking areas are no longer allowed, so anyone who wants to smoke has to go outside. Managers of smoke-free premises and vehicles have legal responsibilities to prevent people from smoking. Do I have to create a smoking area? Providing a smoking area is not a legal requirement, however, employers should consider the effects of not doing so, for example, infringement of Health & Safety regulations or creating littering problems. Local Environmental Health officers can be contacted for further advice regarding compliance with smoking regulations. What are the penalties for breaking the Smoking Ban? Those who do not take ‘reasonable’ actions to prevent smoking on their premises are liable to a £2500 fixed penalty fine, failing to display no smoking signs will result in a £200 fine, and those individuals who are caught smoking will receive a £50 fine.

Can shelters have windows and doors? Windows and doors do not provide an effective means of ventilation and should not be considered. The only way this can be achieved is to have areas of the shelter open to the outside air.

How can I provide a smoking area for employees? Installing a smoking shelter is the ideal way to provide outside cover for smokers. Smoking shelters must adhere to specific regulation to ensure it does not constitute an enclosed or substantially enclosed space. 50% of the wall area must be open to the air. Also, the shelter must not have any objects such as a hedge or barrier closer than 1.5m from the structure or have an open side against another wall, as this will obstruct the flow of fresh air into the shelter.

Economic use of durable materials and minimal installation requirements make the Recycling Centre Corrals an effective method of housing waste containers and recycling bins. Hinged locking bars may be secured by padlocks to minimise the possibility of vandalism and assist refuse collectors and cleaners in keeping the facility orderly.

Littler bins can easily be used to conceal a bomb or explosive device, posing a serious threat to buildings and to the safety of staff and the public. Even worse, the bin becomes part of the attack and maximises the intensity of the bomb by spraying shrapnel and fragments over great distances. A terrorist attack utilising standard litter bins and remotely activated or time delayed explosive devices can be easily coordinated to strike multiple places simultaneously or in stages without exposing the terrorist to harm, who will most likely be located at a safe location.

Special Commissions

When Maidstone Borough Council decided to redevelop their town centre Furnitubes were the obvious choice to design and develop a complete range of innovative street furniture. With no specific visual starting points, Furnitubes’ designers provided a series of conceptual designs to help establish their clients needs. The result is a stunning range of complementary street furniture including a multi purpose litter bin divided to receive ordinary litter and cans for recycling. The lid also has the unique feature of a cast bronze cigarette stubber, encouraging smokers to dispose of their stubs in the litter bin rather than on the street. Furnitubes have an agreement with Maidstone Borough Council to be able to offer this exclusive range outside the county of Kent. The complete range of street furniture designed for the Maidstone Project can be seen in the Seating section on page 160.

Furnitubes design team were commissioned to design a litter bin together with seating and railings to create a strong identity for the redevelopment of London Underground’s Southgate Station. Constructed from steel tube to withstand the most rigorous of environments and finished in the distinctive blue of the London Underground Piccadilly Line, the litter bin is both functional and appealing. ▲ SOUTHGATE Bin

Furnitubes worked alongside designers commissioned by Brighton Council to develop an original bin for one of Britain’s most prestigious seaside towns. The final design has a wave cast around the litter bin echoing the seascape.
