Furnitubes modernised the railing system with the introduction of their new generation Linx system - an astonishing, simple revolution in railing design and installation. The Linx’s unique post to panel connection enables modular panels to be fitted and adjusted on site, to a variety of radii and height levels. - see pages 114-125 for more information.

SELECTING AN APPROPRIATE RAILING SYSTEM STEP 1: Assess the Site As well as selecting a guardrail design for aesthetic reasons, it is important to consider how the chosen system will fit the proposed site. It is unlikely that any site is actually flat and that only straight runs of guardrail will be required - sites usually include hills, bends and awkward junctions around pedestrian crossings etc.

STEP 2: CHOOSE A SYSTEM If the guardrail that you select will fit your site with ‘standard’ components only, this will shorten manufacturing lead times and generally speaking will be more cost effective. Also, spare components can be held in stock for replacement purposes at immediate notice rather than made to order minimising inconvenience and vastly reducing maintenance costs. For a guardrail that requires special components, i.e. those denoted as ‘options’ in the table below, the opposite may apply.

The Linx range comprises 4 basic series, based on different post and horizontal bar sections and sizes. In each series the post can be fitted with a choice of top caps and collars that enable countless decorative combinations. The modular design also allows clients to keep a ready stock of spare panels for instant replacement should any of the railing system be damaged.

Those involved in specifying and installing guardrail are all too aware of the inflexibility of most systems. The necessity for a full site survey and the manufacture of 'special' components and 'one-offs' to suit specific site conditions is time-consuming and expensive. Furthermore, if replacement sections are required after an accident has occurred, the exact damaged components need to be identified and new 'special' components manufactured. This inevitably results in the site being left in disrepair for a long period of time.

The following images are taken from a workshop demonstration of the step-by-step assembly sequence for the Linx 100 series patented bracket connection, showing how variable angles and heights can be achieved with standard posts and panels, and therefore how standard components can be used for virtually all sites.

MARKING THE BRACKETS When the height and angle of the railing has been determined, hole centres for the fixing brackets are marked and centre punched.

DRILLING THE POST A 12mm diameter hole is drilled through the wall of the post at the marked positions.

THE RIVNUT As the name suggests, a rivnut is a combination of a rivet and a nut - essentially a rivet that has an internal thread and is shown here being fitted to the rivnut tool with an M10 mandrel.

FITTING THE RIVNUT The rivnut is fitted to the post via the previously drilled hole and tightened by means of a spanner and rivnut tool. The rivnut now forms a threaded insert onto which a bracket can be securely attached.

FITTING THE BRACKET The bracket is shaped to suit the post diameter and is fastened by a simple bolt connection to the previously fixed rivnut.

THE BRACKET The bracket now forms a solid connection on the post. The fixing shown here will be hidden when the railing panel is attached.

OFFERING UP THE RAILINGS The railing panel, or individual rail is loosely attached to the bracket by the supplied fixings until final adjustment is made.

SECURING THE RAILINGS A small degree of lateral adjustment is achieved by means of the slot in the bracket. Once in the correct position, fixings are tightened so the post and panel or rail form a combined solid structure.

THE NEXT PANEL... The bracket is positioned on the post at an angle and height to suit the position of the next post in the line of railings and the assembly sequence as described above is repeated.

RAILINGS

THE ASSEMBLY KIT All brackets and fixings are supplied as standard. The only specialist item required is the rivnut tool, available from Furnitubes at a nominal price.

The video CD also contains additional footage of the Linx 100 series during site assembly and of a number of completed installations. * Note: the post shown here is a Linx 100 ‘High Visibility’ post (with sight gap) which requires all brackets to be bolted to the post on site in order to adjust the precise rotation of the post cut-out gap section. The rotation angle of non-visirail posts (without gap) is not important, and brackets are supplied pre-fixed on one side of the post.

STAINLESS STEEL OPTIONS

The striking, clean-cut look of stainless steel makes it an ideal material for modern eye-catching designs. Stainless steel is also extremely hardwearing, corrosion resistant, 100% recyclable and does not require a protective coating. Instead it can be polished to either a satin or bright mirror finish.

In addition to its versatility for coping with site variations, the Linx system has also been adapted with a number of unique stainless steel cap designs. Furnitubes worked with Haringey Council to achieve a double-ringed variation of the Linx 200. The stainless steel cap complements the architectural Art Deco features of the nearby London Underground station.

Durability and reliability combined with functional good looks are essential qualities for all guardrail systems. Furnitubes’ composite barriers are manufactured from steel and cast iron, offering a combination of strength, reliable protection and durability to help ensure pedestrian safety wherever they are specified. Composite bollards have also been created to support rail applications. Further details appear in the Bollards section.

RAILINGS

The Stretford guardrail is a popular choice among specifiers due to its flexibility. The panels are able to follow the line of a gentle curve in a segmented arrangement, as can be seen in the picture on this page. This could preclude the need for a costly site survey and the production of specially radiused panels. The Stretford is available with a wide range of top and base castings and in two different post diameters.

Sometimes it is necessary for railings to be removable to allow them to be taken away during special occasions or for access to manhole services below. Furnitubes F1 socket is suitable for this task. The FI 50 socket is designed to accept a 50mm square post profile, which makes it ideal for use with the OKR and HKR railing systems, while the FI 75 and FI 115 are suited for our larger railing systems.

Furnitubes manufacture one of the widest and most comprehensive range of cast iron post & rail systems on the market today. Often selected for its aesthetic qualities, cast iron gives a timeless elegance to towns and heritage areas. Cast iron is corrosion resistant and therefore ideal for seafronts, piers, marinas and canals where a low maintenance system is required. Public safety is paramount and careful positioning of post & rail directs pedestrians away from danger especially at roadside, waterside or other high-risk areas.

RAILINGS

The Reigate post has been designed specifically to accommodate a variety of rail systems. Full, 3/4 or 1/2 guardrail, 3-rail, 2-rail and trip-rail. This diversity allows a variety of options for multiple applications within the same general area.

Furnitubes cast iron railings are recommended with bent corners. This allows any angle to be achieved instead of the standard 90 degrees. This arrangement also allows for easy replacement if damaged as the post is more likely to remain intact.

Furnitubes’ design team were sensitive to conservation when asked to extend the existing railings along Eastbourne seafront. The post & rail pictured here is an exact replica of the unusual cast aluminium original.

While the main function of guardrail is to protect the public from the highway, many systems can be adapted to either incorporate access gates (see page 142) or tailored for wall-top installation, as shown here.

SPECIAL SITES

The Linx Railing was adapted to replace the existing railings at Brighton Marina. Trafford capped posts were supplied with a bolt-down plate to fix to the existing foundations. The Romney Guardrail installed at St Georges Wharf, Vauxhall, has been adapted to incorporate timber handrails to create an attractive contrast between natural timber and painted steel.

CAST IRON BOLLARDS AS RAILING POSTS Furnitubes’ design team have researched new uses for traditional cast iron bollards, and the flexibility of our standard products means that it is possible to adapt items in a way which most readily suits the requirements of our clients. Right, a standard Holborn bollard has been adapted to accept two rail posts. This versatility permits a uniform appearance with other items of street furniture and with existing bollards. Standard cast iron bollards can be adapted to act as barriers, railings, fencing and gate posts.

Railings can also be designed to work in conjunction with many of Furnitubes’ products. Here a Linx 100 panel fits seamlessly into a Bell Traffic Bollard. The Bell protects the post from damage and the post provides increased visibility and safety.

Many of these items are exclusive to Furnitubes International, such as the Belsize whose design was taken from an original Victorian bollard at Belsize Park in Hampstead. Furnitubes’ pattern makers skillfully produced a faithful copy which was then cast and adapted to take a circular section rail. & HOLBORN gates For secured access, Furnitubes also offer a heavy duty gate, utilising reinforced Telford bollards in S.G iron for excellent strength characteristics. Both the Holborn and Telford gates comprise of a hinge bollard, a locking bollard, plus an optional additional bollard to secure the gate when in the open position. Bollards require a foundation depth of 800mm. The gate is available with a clearance width of either 2900mm, 3420mm or 4500mm. ‘Emergency Access - Keep Clear’ reflective sign plates are also available.
