TEMPORARY RAFTER ANCHOR
Safe System of Work to Access Pitched Roof
Ensure you are have the appropriate access and PPE equipment and are competent to carry out a risk assessment and the pre-user inspection and that you are able to use the PPE correctly. (Refer to the PPE Inspection, How to Wear Your Harness and Rope Grab Operation Guide). Ensure you are working from a safe means of access arrangement e.g scaffold platform with guardrails and toe boards.

Whilst the roof ladder is on the ground, or in a safe position, connect the 2m galvanized sling to the 2nd/3rd rung from the top of the roof ladder as shown above. Then connect the 5m rope to the galvanized sling via a screw gate karabiner. Ensure the screw gate is tightened.
2
Carefully manual handle the ladder to the roof slope ensuring the wheels of the ridge hook are placed on the roof tiles/slates or material. Carefully push the roof ladder up the roof slope until it reaches the ridge. Now turn the roof ladder over, so the ridge hook engages with the ridge tile.

Now connect the rope grab device to the rope which is attached to the roof ladder. (See Rope Grab Operation User Guide)
6
Ensure the base hook of the Rafter Anchor is located to the underside of the roof rafter. Position the anchor plate as shown on top of the roof rafter.
4
Now begin to carefully climb the roof ladder and take up a fall restraint position at the top of the roof ladder by adjusting the rope grab as you get closer to the top of the ladder.
7
Begin to tighten the wing nut of the Rafter Anchor ensuring the boss locates in the location hole as shown.
5
When in a comfortable position lift roof tiles and position the Rafter Anchor as shown
8
With the anchor plate parallel with the roof rafter fix at least three 5 x 60mm screws into the roof rafter and ensure they are tight. Note at this point: Finally tighten down the wing nut and ensure the anchorage point is firm.

The following procedure needs to be adopted to transfer from the roof ladder anchorage point to the Rafter Anchor. Attach the 1m restraint lanyard to the 2m galvanized sling via the screw gate karabiner and tighten the screw gate.
12
Disconnect the 1m rope restraint lanyard from the front or side attachment point of the harness.
10
Attach the other end of the 1m restraint lanyard to the front or side attachment point of the harness via the karabiner and tighten the screw gate.
13
You have now transferred to the Rafter Anchorage point and can now work preferably in fall restraint, but where necessary in fall arrest.
11
Disconnect the karabiner which attaches the rope grab rope to the 2m galvanized sling and attach this to the Rafter Anchor via the karabiner and tighten the screw gate.
Simply reverse the above procedure when the work is completed and carefully replace the roof tiles.
