1.0 Overview 1.6 Color: Print
CMYK color ramp is used in newsprint applications. Universal graphics should primarily use Core Blue and Core Gray ramps. However, USA TODAY sub-brand specific graphics may use Core, Accent, and the lightest and darkest value of each color.
For USA TODAY non-sub-brand specific graphics, use the alternate colors and darkest value. Grayscale is reserved for print use. Note that CMYK black (0/0/0/100) is used, in print only, for the Grayscale and Opinion ramps. Black is also used for print text.

Readability is important to our audiences, so we prioritize creating content that meets current accessibility and compliance standards. When writing text in digital applications, follow the guidelines of accessible color pairings. White backgrounds should be prioritized. Preferred background colors also include: Core Gray and Core Gray Tint.
All standards are set to align with minimum contrast standards (AA) with a 1.4.3 pass indicator for fonts below or above 18pts. Dots next to each style indicate accessibility: green is an accessible combination, red is not. To test more, use contrastchecker.com.

We bring expression into our graphics through stylization. However, the tone of the content should determine the level of stylization.
For more playful content, the stylized talk bubble and iconography can be used. When content is more serious, graphic enhancements should be minimized.

Universal graphics should primarily use Core Blue and Core Gray ramps. 1A is an example using Core, Accent, and the lightest and darkest value. Using alternate values from the ramp maximizes contrast. When necessary, the full ramp can be used as seen in 1B.
USA TODAY sub-brand specific graphics may use Core, Accent, and the lightest and darkest value of each color. Non-sub-brand specific graphics may use the alternate colors outlined in the color ramp. Ex: political and weather maps (2A and 2B).
