Stepping out of 1916 and into 2014… four of the five founding members of the “Hoosier Group” pose above for artist Wayman Adams; T. C. Steele, Otto Stark, J. Ottis Adams, and William Forsythe, Adams’ first teachers in Indiana. The painting exemplifies Adams’ group portraits...The only missing member, Richard Gruelle, died in 1914, before the work was painted. To our Patrons, Artists and Friends, Ninety years. Imagine what it would have been like to attend the first Hoosier Salon Annual Exhibition in Chicago in 1925. Hundreds of people attended the private reception before the exhibition opened. Many Indiana guests arrived on the morning and afternoon trains. Initially reluctant, T.C. Steele was convinced to make the journey from his Brown County studio by repeated pleas from Estella King, chairman of the Daughters of Indiana arts committee. All four living Hoosier Group members – Steele, Otto Stark, J. Ottis Adams, and William Forsythe – had works displayed, along with art from Charles W. Dahlgreen, Frank V. Dudley, Frederick M. Polley, J. Will Vawter and Clifton Wheeler. Portrait artist Wayman Adams shipped four canvases from his New York City studio. Nearly 30 percent of the accepted entries were from female artists. What will history say about the Hoosier Salon 90th Annual Exhibition? We hope it will be remembered in the same reverential way for having such excellent works of art that Indiana’s First Lady Karen Pence was there to greet Indiana’s finest artists of 2014! If the Hoosier Group artists were still living, they would be astonished to see guests for the 90th Annual Exhibition arrive not by train, but by computer-controlled automobiles. They would be in awe of the photos and “selfies” we’ll take at the awards ceremony with film-less cameras and magical smart phones. We think they would be thrilled to meet today’s Indiana artists and to see that our organization remains true to its original mission of ensuring art by Indiana artists receives recognition by the outside world. Ninety years of history is a big responsibility; we plan to keep the tradition alive for many years to come. Sincerely, Emily West President Board of Directors

Donnae Dole Executive Director Hoosier Salon
About the Organization The Hoosier Salon strives to fulfill its vision for fostering visual art and its appreciation by offering a variety of programs designed to educate, inspire, and enhance the lives of the citizens of our state while promoting the creativity, talent and technique of Indiana artists. The rich heritage of the Hoosier Salon began in 1924 when the Daughters of Indiana began working on the first exhibition of the Hoosier Salon at Marshall Fields and Company Galleries in Chicago. Naming their show after the famous French “Salon” of the 19th century, these women were eager to prove that Indiana artists deserved national recognition. The high quality of art was applauded by critics and the public alike, making the first exhibition, which included works by such notables as T.C. Steele, J.Ottis Adams, Eugene Savage and William Forsyth, an unqualified success. In 1942 the Women’s Department Club of Indianapolis facilitated the move of the exhibit and the organization from Chicago to downtown Indianapolis. The annual exhibit was housed first in the Wm. H. Block Galleries (until 1977) and then in the L.S. Ayres Auditorium. The annual exhibition was then moved to the Indiana State Museum in 1990 when Ayres closed its downtown store. The exhibit stayed at the Indiana State Museum until 2011. This year marks the 90th consecutive annual exhibition and it will be our third year at the Eugene and Marilyn Glick Indiana History Center. The judging process of this year’s works of art took place the first of May at the Twin Oaks Estate. This year we will be awarding nearly $25,000 in prizes of awarded for excellence to artists. Each year a significant number of works are purchased from the show by collectors, corporations, organizations and the general public. In addition to the exhibit at the Eugene and Marilyn Glick Indiana History Center, approximately two-thirds of works of art will travel to many tour sites around the state of Indiana from September 1, 2014 to December 1, 2014. While the annual exhibition is the biggest event sponsored by the Hoosier Salon Patrons Association, the organization promotes Indiana artists in several other ways, including year-round galleries in Carmel and New Harmony. Our Wabash, IN gallery closed temporarily in early 2014. Member artists who have been juried into one annual exhibit may consign art work to the galleries. More than twenty special shows are hosted each year by the galleries featuring member artists. The Hoosier Salon also has an educational outreach program working directly with schools. In 2014 the Education Outreach Committee of the board of directors will expand and revamp its programs.
The Hoosier Salon strives to fulfill its vision for fostering visual art and its appreciation by offering a variety of programs designed to educate, inspire, and enhance the lives of the citizens of our state while promoting the creativity, talent and technique of Indiana artists.

The Judges
Frank LaLumia, Trinidad, Colorado
Art connects people across space and time. Consider the late Rembrandt Self-Portraits; Degas’ “The Absinthe Drinker”; Edvard Munch’s “The Scream.” These images have transcended the realm of art and have become iconic to the human experience. Such is the power of art. It also underscores the difficult task of the juror. Judging the craft of a painting is only part of the task. The most technically correct piece is not always the one that reaches out and grabs you. The juror’s task is finding that balance between fine craftsmanship and expressive content. As jurors, we worked hard and gave every piece our full consideration. To the artists who were rejected, I say that it’s not a final judgement. To the artists who were accepted, I say “Congratulations and nicely done.” And to the award winners, I say, “You have created something moving, in the finest tradition of the Hoosier Salon.” Congratulations to all. It has been an honor to participate as a juror in the 90th Annual Hoosier Salon. I want to thank Executive Director of the Hoosier Salon Donnae Dole, the board of directors, and the many volunteers and artists who make this beautiful show possible.
Judging is necessarily an individual exercise, seasoned by experience, knowledge and personal taste. Though objectivity is the ideal, it still comes down to personal judgement. Personally, I am looking for a certain level of technical proficiency, as well as a unique and personal vision with evidence of the artist’s dedication to his or her work. Every submission I reviewed had positive attributes and the quality of the submissions on the whole was very high.
Kathleen Newman, Chicago, Illinois
As an artist myself, I must comment that I have never before experienced such tremendous support and appreciation for the arts within a state government. The rich heritage of the Hoosier Salon provides a beautiful example of cultural development, encouragement and inspiration to your artists ~ today and tomorrow. Take a look around the gallery… Indiana, you should be very proud of your work!
Selecting work for the 90th Annual Hoosier Salon is quite an honor and I want to especially thank Donnae Dole for inviting me to participate as juror. It was a privilege to work with fellow juror, Frank LaLumia and we are both very proud to present such an outstanding exhibition for this year’s historic event. With appreciation to the Hoosier Salon committee for their attention to the many details that made the challenge of judging submissions an extremely pleasant one and, of course, thank you to the many talented artists from across the state who submitted their exquisite entries.
Though the use of digital files has greatly improved over the years, images have never been a substitute for seeing art in person. The direct experience to select an exhibition by viewing more than 500 original works, one-by-one, was an incredible luxury I have never before experienced. I applaud the Hoosier Salon for keeping this tradition intact. Within two days, we reviewed and selected the final 125 paintings and sculptures to present this very strong showing of your talented Indiana artists. A heartfelt congratulations to all the participants and award winners.
