Here’s something interesting your financial adviser probably won’t share with you: the majority of mutual fund managers do worse than their benchmark (such as the S&P 500 index). If you’re like most people, you probably have a good amount of money in these mutual funds that turned out not as wonderful as advertised. However, for those of you who don’t have the time or motivation of managing your own investments, we still encourage to find a good money manager. The problem and the solution is actually quite simple. The problem is many financial advisors, trade advisors, and money managers just aren’t good investors and traders. That goes for mutual fund managers, hedge fund managers, managed futures managers, etc. The solution? Educate yourself about the markets and investment strategies (but not as extensively as if you were trading by yourself). Only then can you tell the skilled money managers and advisors from the smooth talking salesman. In the end, it is your money. You owe it to yourself to interview and hire the best talent to manage your money (and fire those that don’t do their job). Good advisors and money managers are true professionals in their field and would do a much better job than you could. Investment advisors allow you the freedom to manage your own money and make your own decisions.
