Though it is sometimes not realized, the most pressing climate risk many financial institutions will face in the next decade is not extreme weather, but the economic dislocation caused by decarbonisation (possibly aggravated by political risk of policy reversals following elections). Be it from needing different skills in the workforce, moving people to new areas of economic activity, on-shoring production to reduce emissions in shipping, using sustainable materials in construction of buildings, electrification, or accounting for emissions intensity in financial decisions, the economic landscape will soon change dramatically, creating risks and opportunities for firms. This session will explore how insurers and their reinsurers may be affected by this and how they can prepare for a greener economy.
