Furniture Shopping IN HIGH POINT Many of you know nearby High Point as the Home Furnishings Capital of the World™. However, most of the great furniture showrooms are only open to those attending the furniture market during the twice-a-year events. During the rest of the year, the general public cannot go in the showrooms. Here’s an insider’s tip for you: the best way to shop in High Point is through the Design Access program. Design Access gives you an exclusive opportunity to shop at more than 50 home furnishings showrooms that are not open to the public. As a bonus, you’ll be accompanied by an interior designer who will shop with you to offer wise design advice and direction. You also may make furnishings purchases through your designer. Take a day trip to shop for furniture in our fellow Piedmont Triad city. Go to highpoint.org/furnish-your-world to begin your home furnishings shopping journey!
February and March provide a perfect time to begin your spring garden indoors. There are plenty of reasons to sow your own seeds, including the ability to grow unusual and heirloom varieties that are rarely available at local nurseries. Ready to dig in? Read the seed packet instructions, which typically recommend planting seeds in cell-lined containers four to eight weeks before final frost. Be sure to keep the seed packets for future instructions. Most seedlings like the same temperature we do—between 65°F and 72°F. When your plants reach an inch tall, thin them to one per container cell by snipping the seedlings at the soil line (not pulling them out). It may feel like tough love, but this step is crucial. As winter draws to a close, acclimate your plants to the elements bit by bit. A week or so before the last frost, place the tray of seedlings outside for a few hours in the afternoon, bringing them back indoors overnight. Repeat this process — slowly increasing the amount of time the plants stay out—until all danger of frost has passed. Once it's finally time to settle your tiny plants in the garden, refer to the packet for guidance on their sun and shade preferences as well as how deep and how far apart to plant them. To remove each seedling from its cell, gently nudge the bottom. Be careful not to bury the stem while planting. Then water and let nature take its course.
