July-August 2017

July 8 Brookberry Farm once again hosted the 15th annual Kids for Kids Triathlon on Saturday, July 8. Hundreds of kids, family members and volunteers came to Brookberry Farm for the Triathlon, which benefits a number of children’s charities. Since its inception, the Kids for Kids Triathlon has raised more than $105,000 (including earnings for this year). A USA Triathlon (USAT) sanctioned event, the Kids for Kids Triathlon featured two age groups. Kids ages 7 to 10 years competed by swimming 100 yards, biking 3.1 miles and running .6 miles. For the older kids, ages 11 to 14, the competition was doubled – swimming 200 yards, biking 6.2 miles and running 1.2 miles. Brookberry Farm congratulates all those who placed in this year’s competition. Thank you to all the kids who participated this year and helped raise much-needed funds for children’s charities.

It’s hard to think “late summer,” but it will be here in just a few weeks. Prime bloom time in most North Carolina perennial flower gardens runs from late May through early July—a glorious time but a short 5 or 6 weeks. By late July, most perennial gardens are past their prime and look pretty dull for the rest of the season. Fortunately, there are many perennials that bloom in late summer, including coneflower, asters, mums, Russian sage, cimicifuga, sedum, rudbeckia, and phlox. Annuals, however, are the real key to summer-long color. Unlike many perennials, most annuals thrive in summer’s heat and once they get started, will keep blooming right into early fall. With a little planning you can create annual-perennial partnerships that will keep your flower gardens looking terrific for a full 5 or 6 months. One important tip to keep your annuals looking good until fall: Don’t forget to water on a regular basis. With summer heat, some annuals need water almost every day – particularly those that are in pots sitting on beautiful outdoor patios at Brookberry Farm!
