LOCAL TREASURES
Tanglewood Park
Many Brookberry Farm residents visit Tanglewood Park during the annual Festival of Lights, but there’s plenty reason to plan a return visit this spring, including any combination of the Tanglewood Park Arboretum and Rose Garden, the public pool, horse stables, and Mallard Lake for fishing and paddleboat renting. Tanglewood also has two golf courses, the Championship Course and the Reynolds Course. William Neal Reynolds, brother of R. J. Reynolds, purchased the property in 1921. Mr. Will, as he was called, raised and raced Standardbred harness horses and established Tanglewood Farm as a home to some of the country's finest
pacers. Mr. Will also expanded the 1859 Manor House from 18 to 28 rooms and included a special room dedicated to his horse trophies. Mr. Will's wife, Kate, a horticultural enthusiast, began the extensive native and ornamental plantings, including an 800-bush Rose Garden on the Manor House lawn. The Reynolds couple had no children, and, as a gesture enabling others to benefit from the beauty, elegance, history, and recreation their country estate had to offer, in 1951, they willed the Tanglewood property to the citizens of Forsyth County to share as a public recreational park.

FERNS!
Chrissy Kincheloe

Editor Even if your Brookberry Farm garden space is limited, try to find a place in the shade for ferns. They ask for very little care and repay you with ease of growth and breathtaking beauty. Most can be easily divided after two or three years in your garden, increasing your garden beauty without costing you a dime. Best of all, they add texture like no other perennial — graceful and airy, despite their hardiness and willingness to grow. Among the most popular and widely-grown in American gardens, ferns have come by their reputation honestly. It’s hard to imagine anything easier to grow. In the wild, ferns thrive in the dappled shade of the woodlands, finding their feet in rotted leaves and other rich soil ingredients. Very few can tolerate dry soils, and all prefer a good pampering their first two years — lots of water and humus! Keep garden debris away from the base of your ferns if possible. Rot can be a problem when the crown of the fern sits in stagnant water. Be sure to water the roots and not the fronds. If your fern is evergreen, it’s a good idea to thin the old fronds in spring as the new ones appear. At the same time, apply a new layer of mulch for the new growing year.
