Designers of The Village ~

Allison Ramsey Architects If you haven’t taken an evening or early morning stroll through The Village at Brookberry Farm this spring, now is a good time. As construction continued last fall and winter, the vision for The Village began to emerge. And the best is yet to come, thanks to the extraordinary design work of Allison Ramsey Architects. “I’m very excited about the progress of The Village center at Brookberry Farm now that we have the pavilion complete and landscaping,” Cooter Ramsey, AIA, of Allison Ramey Architects said. “We have recently approved some great houses along the park that will really set the tone for the village as a whole. We are super excited about seeing this phase beginning to take shape as we had envisioned.” “We at Allison Ramsey believe that we are developer-friendly in that we understand the need to add value to the land not only to enhance the bottom line but to create a great senseof-place that enhances the quality of life and the future marketability of the community,” he added. “As town architects, we understand how to temper the demand for quality design within the given economic realities.” “Our firm is equally builder-friendly. In fact many of us have at times been builders ourselves. We understand that mistakes on the drawings equal time and costs to both the builder and the client,” Ramsey said. “We have built enough to know that we can always learn from the builder on the ground, and we value the builder as an important member of the team.”

May Day

to Brookberry Farm! What a great month to be living in Winston-Salem. With spring fully upon us and summer fast approaching, we all love being outside enjoying the beauty of Brookberry Farm and surrounding areas. With all the pretty flowers being planted, fabulous green grass and trees, it’s a wonder that we all don’t just live on our porches and decks. Maybe some of you do. It is definitely not too late to do more planting or, if you haven’t even started yet, now is the time to get it in gear. Annual flowers are the most popular plants this time of year for the majority of homeowners. The varieties available now are almost endless. If you can imagine the color you want, chances are it is available in a number of flowers. With a little soil preparation and regular watering (if it is dry out), the aesthetic beauty and visual enhancement provided by planting flowers is limitless. Many Mothers probably received some gorgeous hanging baskets for Mother’s Day. When it gets hot out, water those hanging baskets almost every day to keep them looking fresh. Regular liquid fertilizer helps hanging baskets to keep looking their best. In addition, many homeowners find that using an easy-to-use and spread granular food for flowers planted in the ground and containers goes a long way to keep then happy and providing us with color all season long. A very popular food item that gets planted this month is a longtime favorite of Winston-Salem gardeners: the tomato. With hundreds of varieties, it may seem hard to choose the right one. Bottom line, there is not a bad tomato if it came from your garden. Plant some tomatoes now, and you will be glad you did. Just make sure your spot has at least six hours of direct sunlight. There are many more vegetable plants that work well for gardens here for the summer growing months. It is starting to get on the late side for starting your vegetables by seed, so now is a good time to go to the local garden center and get small plants. This is an excellent opportunity to not only grow your own food but a great way to introduce your children, grandchildren and neighborhood kids to gardening. We need to start the future “farmers” and gardeners now!
