FALL GARDEN MAINTENANCE Autumn is the ideal time to clean up your gardens and lawn to make way for Fall planting and a successful spring harvest. The first step is to take inventory of your current plants and vegetables — are they close to rotting? Remove all of your foliage that is starting to rot and clean up and rake the weeds and debris surrounding them. By doing so, this can decrease the chance of weed seeds, diseases and pests that could appear during Winter.

After you’ve finished your fall maintenance, you’re ready to start planting. Many plants and vegetables such as cabbage, radish, lettuces and garlic can be grown up until the first freeze and sometimes even longer. You can help extend the harvest time by using mulch and row covers but be aware when the weather decreases drastically, cover any crops if it begins to snow. Ensuring that you take a little extra tending to your garden at the start of Fall will give you much better results when spring planting comes around.
