Dear friends of the Mandira, We Bow to Your Wellbeing Although health is now a trend, it is not a fleeting fad. What began a few decades ago with the gradual proliferation of gyms, has now become a firm facet of contemporary society, encompassing all aspects of health. During the corona pandemic, staying fit and healthy has become a worldwide priority. Ayurveda has considered health a holistic system for over 5,000 years. By boosting the body‘s own barriers and systems and promoting selfhealing we can protect ourselves against viruses, bacteria, external stresses and – last but not least – the telltale signs of ageing. Prevention is at the forefront of medical care. Holistic Ayurveda builds on this philosophy by combining the ancient teachings with the latest scientific findings and complementary medical methods. We have succeeded in developing a holistic concept that is tailored to the needs of our time and will help us find solutions for the challenges of the future. At the Ayurveda Resort Mandira, we have created a place where you can explore new avenues while also enjoying a relaxing break away from it all. Holistic Ayurveda Solutions and wellbeing go hand in hand. Let‘s embark on your journey together – we look forward to your visit! Christina Mauracher & Andreas Drexler and the Holistic Ayurveda team

effects will last. A 21-day programme allows behavioural changes to be firmly established. What effect is attributed to Panchakarma? It can be similar to a retreat, where you go deep inside yourself and listen to your inner voice. Panchakarma helps to give your body, mind and senses the space to detox and regenerate. Just like a home needs spring cleaning and a car needs servicing, people also need a yearly reset. Doing this also lays the foundation for a strong immune system and increased resilience. What is ghee’s role? During the first few days of the programme, you drink warm medicinal ghee (clarified butter). Ghee can penetrate deep into the tissues, where it liquefies toxins and diverts them to the organs of the excretory system. What is detoxing? Detoxing is a term that refers to holistic measures to help the body excrete accumulated toxins and harmful metabolic waste. Holistic Ayurveda treatments – massages, exfoliations, herbal compresses, flowing oil treatments, etc. – are performed with heat and oils that also help to flush out unwanted material from the body. Why is a herbal tonic sometimes used instead of ghee? The Mandira also offers milder forms of detoxification through our range of Holistic Ayurveda Detox programmes. These treatments replace ghee with a herbal tonic made of bitter herbs from the Alps. The tonic mainly targets the gastrointestinal tract. Can I exercise during Panchakarma? To optimise detoxification and ensure longlasting effects, you should significantly reduce or avoid active sport, socialising, media consumption and working during the treatment programme. Current research also shows that environmental
What does ‘Panchakarma’ mean? Panchakarma is an essential part of the Ayurvedic science of preserving and promoting health and is frequently applied as a preventive measure. It translates as ‘five actions’ (Pancha = five; Karma = action), in reference to the treatments involved in holistic detoxification. What difference does it make whether a programme lasts 7, 10, 14 or 21 days? The longer the programme, the more thorough the detoxification process and the longer its

factors such as exposure to strong sunlight, wind, wet weather and heat can undermine the effects of the programme. Your body and mind should rest and be protected from strain – the programme will demand quite a bit of physical and mental energy. What is the purpose of the heated oils? The forehead treatment with flowing oil is proven to counteract mental unease and calm the Vata Dosha. Oils prepared with special herbs are applied in various ways depending on an individual’s physical constitutional type and specific imbalances. The oils and treatment techniques also help to rid the body of toxins and metabolic waste. How important is it to prepare for treatment and process after it? Gentle transitions are important to give the body time to let go before the start and to recover once the treatment programme has finished. When the demanding cleansing process is complete, the body and mind require some time to regain their strength and stabilise. Too abrupt a transition would prove overwhelming. What side effects should I expect? Detoxification is a rigorous process that really stretches you, both physically and mentally. Everyone’s constitution is different, so the effects vary from person to person. Potential symptoms include severe headaches, tiredness, body aches and pains, nausea, skin irritation, and constipation or diarrhoea. They may also include emotional conditions such as sadness and anxiety.
However, these symptoms should be short-lived and normally disappear after the day of purging. Do Panchakarma programmes have a lasting impact? Yes. Because this is about deep cleansing and targeting stress, the resulting regeneration should last a long time. Many people experience a new vitality and zest for life and find a more harmonious lifestyle that offers quality of life on all levels: blockages dissolve, balance is restored, and performance, strength and resilience increase. Panchakarma can also help to prevent illness, boost the immune system and be highly effective in dealing with chronic complaints.

Why has the practice become so popular in recent years? In this interview with our Yoga teacher Philipp Schleicher, we get to the bottom of the Yoga boom.
Why have we taken to Yoga with such enthusiasm? Philipp: Its historical origins definitely play a part. Yoga developed from the sages who meditated for hours, even days, and maintained their physical fitness in order to do so. 3,000 years later, we live in a society in which most people work sitting down. But the human body is like a leopard, in that it’s more suited to climbing trees, so a sedentary lifestyle causes all manner of problems. People feel uncomfortable in their skin but don’t know why.
PHILIPP SCHLEICHER: Our bodies are like leopards. They need to move, climb trees, run. If this urge is blocked, the leopard falls ill.
How does Yoga promote self-inquiry? Obviously, one of the things that makes Yoga so attractive is that it’s a great form of exercise that has benefits for everyone, even if they are not interested in the other aspects of Yoga. But I also believe that people are more and more drawn to discovering their true self, improving their selfperception. And Yoga can really help with that. Do we in the west actually understand what Yoga is? Yes and no. Many Europeans see Yoga as a path to achieve and maintain fitness. Yoga can indeed result in a toned, flexible body that makes you feel good. This is part of Yoga, but only a small part. What is the philosophy behind Yoga? Yoga is a state of mind, an extremely alert, meditative way of being in the world. It is an attitude to life, a philosophy of being present. Yoga can become part of every action we take: a way of perceiving and experiencing life. I think it’s important to emphasise that we can start practising Yoga for any reason. For many people, the physical aspect is their first priority.
YOGA FOR
BODY AND SPIRI T
» As we learn to create pockets of stillness within our everyday lives, we can become calmer and more self-assured. » This increases our mental resilience – though, obviously, we don’t suddenly become immune to moods, fears or uncertainties. » As a stronger psyche develops, it allows us to face life’s intricacies with greater determination and stability.
29
T H E AY URVE DIC L IF E
But over time, with regular practice, they learn that Yoga is about so much more than that. How does Yoga support our minds? Breathing techniques are extremely important in Yoga. They help to alleviate the effects of stress, which can culminate in burnout if left unchecked. By regularly turning our attention to our breath, we can apply Yoga techniques to our everyday lives, and these help to control day-to-day worries, deal with stressful moments and stop our thoughts from spiralling. Yogis and people who meditate can use their breathing to cope with stressful situations. Even if you’ve only been practising for a short time, you’ll soon notice a positive effect on your psyche. What do breathing exercises do? Breathing deeply and evenly before a Yoga session is a great way to prepare for the exercises to come. Once you’ve settled into typical Yoga breathing, without even realising you’ll use it as you practise. Deep breathing is also integral to the relaxation at the end of a Yoga session. It boosts our concentration – and not just when we’re practising our Asanas. Which styles of Yoga would you recommend for someone looking to change their lifestyle? No specific style of Yoga is likely to change everything. It’s about the experience, about trying things out, surrendering yourself, getting to know yourself and your body in a new way. No Yoga teacher or guru can provide this experience – it’s down to us, and us alone. The different techniques and styles are just a part of our journey, and my journey will differ from yours.

Our minds are freer to focus on our goals, dreams and projects. We may approach others with a smile. Yoga can ease mental and physical tensions. Yoga In the last twenty years or so, psychologists and neuroscientists have shown that mental activity, experiences and state of mind are much more closely intertwined with physical processes than previously thought. When we fall ill, we should pay far more attention to the part played by the ‘spirit’. Stress research indicates that psychological strain can cause imbalances and change our outlook on life. If this stressful state continues, it can trigger serious illnesses.

How do we integrate Ayurvedic nutrition into our lifestyle – and why is it so difficult to change our eating patterns? The first step is to get to grips with basic Ayurvedic principles and implement them at every level of our lives, including nutrition, ensuring that everything we do works with our constitutional type. When you live in line with Ayurveda principles, health and happiness can be achieved through lifestyle and nutrition. It’s up to us to make the right decisions. Our intuition tells us what is good for us and what is not, and it is up to us whether we choose to ignore or heed our inner voice. To change our eating habits, we first need to arrive at this insight before embarking on a thorough study of nutrition. What do Ayurvedic practitioners make of the emotional aspect of eating? We again refer to Ojas, the primal life force. By aligning our diet along Ayurvedic principles, we can attain the best possible Ojas. The results are enhanced zest for life, improved sex drive, and deep emotional and psychological contentment. A balanced intake of the six tastes brings about positive feelings, while an unbalanced intake has a negative effect on body and mind.

Vata E THE R & A IR
nimble, quick, light, cold, subtle, rough, dry, not viscous Vata is the life force itself and the most powerful of the bioenergies. Vata is located in the bladder, the large intestine, the legs, the head, the chest, the throat, the stomach, the navel, the heart and the circulatory system. When Vata is out of balance, disorders are quick to follow. It controls the processes of movement, emotions, nourishment (eating, drinking and breathing), retention and elimination, preservation of bodily tissues as well as sensual and mental activity.
Pitta FIRE & WATE R
hot, spicy, sour, penetrating, light, mildly oily, piercing/sharp Pitta is mostly determined by the Element of Fire. Pitta is located in the lower third of the stomach, the duodenum, the navel, the blood, the eye, the skin, the liver, the heart, the head and the spleen. Pitta regulates the metabolism and controls the digestive system, body temperature, skin pigmentation and the intellect. A person’s emotional expression and presence are also regulated by Pitta.

WINE WISDOM
A healthy lifestyle is today considered integral to a balanced, well-lived life. Indeed, people who pay attention to their diet experience improved general wellbeing and immune systems. Although we wouldn’t normally associate alcohol with nutritional recommendations, wine has been the exception since time immemorial. And rightly so!

The grapevine is one of the oldest cultivated plants. The Vedic (from veda = knowledge, divine revelation) civilisations, which drew their knowledge from ancient Sanskrit writings, were masters of viniculture and winemaking. Draksha (grape) is cultivated in India to make the Ayurvedic tonic Drakshava.
WI N E: A N AYU RV ED I C TON I C The Ayurvedic name for grape is Draksha Phalottama – which means that the grape is ‘the best and most healing of all fruits’. Ancient Ayurvedic texts describe Draksha as a natural coolant and remedy for various health problems. Grapes are said to cool and soothe Pitta’s Subdoshas: Sadhaka Pitta, Pachaka Pitta and Ranjaka Pitta.

More and more vineyards along the South Styrian Wine Route are being cultivated by environmentally friendly, organic winemakers who meet the challenge of protecting the planet by providing us with regional, organic and natural products. The Ayurveda Resort Mandira’s purchasing policy is strongly skewed towards organic produce and most of our wines are organically or sustainably made.
G
As well as being balsam for the soul, the gentle Styrian hill country with its mild, Mediterranean climate also offers excellent conditions for topquality wine cultivation. Following the general trend towards greater sustainability, Styria’s organic winemakers never use artificial fertilisers and pesticides, preferring to work in harmony with nature.

Noise, stress, frantic activity, bright lights ... assailed by a constant stream of stimuli, we face an almost unlimited choice of options and temptations – be it at the shops, in education or in any other aspect of our lives. Our fast-paced, hectic and complex world presents us with an unmanageable mountain of opportunities, expectations and burdens. There are times when we simply cannot see the forest for trees, lose sight of our path and fall by the wayside. To avoid getting lost on the path of life we need selfknowledge. Only with self-awareness can we build stability and resilience.
KNOW YOU RS E LF! Losing focus in life often means a parallel loss of energy. However, we don’t have to generate new energy, we can simply transform what is already there: energy follows our attention. With a vision in mind, a dream or objective, we can easily stay ‘on the ball’. An excess of Vata can often block our access to energy. There are a variety of reasons for this: » Negative belief systems » Misunderstandings » Fear … All these inhibit our energy, rob us of vision and lead to gridlock. The sooner we track down and dissolve these barriers, the sooner can the flow of our energy be restored. We regain the courage to dream and to follow our dreams. T HE PATH TOWARDS LIFE’S LI G H T The ESQ method helps us to recognise inner blockages, to become aware of where we stand and – most importantly – of the ways in which we obstruct ourselves. The beliefs, fears and conflicts that block us are made apparent with the help of self-reflection methods and kinesiological muscle tests. Awareness is the first step towards transformation. The process is reinforced with a range of exercises and coaching which enable new beliefs and visions to manifest themselves.

HOLI STIC AYUR VEDA
Ayurvedic therapies and treatment programmes deal with your spiritual and emotional health as well as physical wellbeing. The psychological aspect is essential in our western world, where we are seeing a huge surge of psychosomatic and mental illnesses that often have their roots in childhood. Depending on the results of your initial consultation and diagnostic tests, ESQ is used to support your anti-stress, burnout prevention, detox or Panchakarma treatment programme. Only holistic cleansing is able to resolve blockages and clear the way for new beginnings.

Holistic Ayurveda L IFE C H R I S T I NA MAU R AC HER I S THE M A S TERM I ND BEHI ND H O LI S T I C AY U R V EDA, CEO OF THE AYURV EDA RES O RT MAND I R A AND A M OTHER O F TWO. Our day has begun. With two small children, » morning meditation is out of the question –
Unsurprisingly, she experiences high levels of stress. But she draws strength both from her family’s love and, of course, Holistic Ayurveda. Here Christina talks us through a typical day and explains how it works.
there’s a constant refrain of ‘Mum come here, Mum I need you …’ Despite the bedlam, I need to incorporate a little Ayurveda into my morning routine. I drink boiled water first thing, taking sips between making porridge and putting on socks. I also clean my tongue to get biofeedback on the state of my health. I get ready and make sure the kids are presentable too. My husband only has himself to deal with … and yet, the four of us are usually ready at the same time.
G O O D MORNING! It’s been a good night – my little one only woke three times, so I’ve had a reasonable amount of sleep. We don’t need alarm clocks in this house. Every morning, at 6am on the dot, I hear the same thing: ‘Mum get up, geeettt uuuppp, now!’
54
Then it’s time for breakfast, for me the most » important meal of the day. I definitely subscribe
At first I felt bad because I didn’t have time for all that once the children came along. I was supposed to be living according to Ayurvedic principles! But it isn’t that simple when you have two small children and run your own business. At that time, sleep seemed more important, so I discussed my concerns with my mentor. He told me very clearly that there’s a time for everything. In certain phases of our lives, we have to adjust our routines and resources. It’s totally fine to focus all your attention on your children instead of meditating. The time will come when you can integrate your previous routines back into your everyday life – or create whole new routines. You just have to make sure you don’t lose sight of your own needs … This is why I have introduced a new evening routine into the current phase of my life: I treat myself to a bath (my way of meditating), have a proper conversation with my husband, and sometimes I fall asleep with one of the kids at 8 pm …
to ‘breakfasting like a king’. There’s a reason why so many cultures agree with this idea! I need something to get my teeth into, so I have a wholegrain bread roll. And maybe even some cheese. How do I align that with Ayurveda? Simple: I toast the bread to incorporate the element of fire. I add a little horseradish to the cheese so that the sharpness alleviates mucus production. Then it’s time for work, which is always varied and invariably challenging. Although it’s rarely easy to juggle work and family life, I’m extremely lucky in that my work is my passion. Obviously I too have bad days, but I couldn‘t do without my work, just as I couldn’t do without my children. I have a vision and a mission – and these give me the purpose and strength to look ahead, even when times are tough. Resilience is hugely important, and these are some of the things that never fail to give me a boost: » Knowing that my work has meaning » Holding my colleagues and guests in high regard » A positive environment » Remaining flexible and open to new ideas » Constant learning – both in my social and professional lives
»

Stay true to yourself! Namasté, Christina Mauracher
»
My husband is another crucial source of support. I know that I can always rely on him, even in times of stress. But what’s most important is knowing that I can rely on myself – the outside world can only provide a certain amount of strength and energy. The greatest source of all lies within us. The following routines and tips help me to continuously nourish my inner power source: I know my constitution. So I know, for example, that warm food and regular meals are important for me. I always have a good breakfast, eat at midday and take my time over my food. Family time starts at 4.30 pm. Yoga, exercise, meditation … I remember the days when I practised Yoga every morning, and then meditated and exercised in the afternoons.

The true value of sleep is something we tend to overlook – until there’s a problem such as having a hard time falling or staying asleep. The result is that horrible lethargy that accompanies us throughout the following day. Sleep is hugely important in Holistic Ayurveda. After a night of restful sleep, we feel balanced, calm and energetic, and our metabolism works better too. If we live by the principles of Ayurveda, everything we do is guided by nature – by our biorhythm: we’re active during the day, and when the sun goes down, we rest.
10PM M EL ATONIN IS R ELEASE D IN TO THE BLO O DS TRE AM
10PM–2AM DEEP S LEEP: The beginning of a complex process. Blood absorbs the nutrients from digested food and transports them to the liver. From there, a control function takes over and carries them on to the heart. The heart then uses the circulatory system to distribute the nutrients to tissues which metabolise them and convert them into energy when needed.

Sleep FAQs
ANSWE RE D BY CHRIS TIN A M AUR ACHER How do you get a regular sleep habit? The easiest way is to follow Ayurvedic principles, i.e. by allowing your daily routine to be governed by nature. How do we rid ourselves of unhelpful behaviours? The first thing is to become aware of them. Only then can you actively intervene and change behaviours with the help of relaxation, Yoga, meditation and by doing the kind of things that are good for you: going for a walk, reading a book, etc.
How much sleep do we need? Everyone is different, so it can vary quite significantly. The need for sleep depends on a host of factors including genes, age, routine and health. How will I know if I’m getting good sleep? It‘s not about how much. If you wake up feeling restored and refreshed and don’t feel tired during the day, you’re sleeping well. Is it a problem if I wake up a few times a night? Yes. Chronically disturbed sleep patterns affect health, performance at work and your social life.

Frequencies IT‘S ALL ABOUT
AND VIBRATIONS
E XHAU STED? BU RNT OUT? ANXIOU S OR D EP RESSED?
Our energy potential is based on the vibration of our cellular frequencies. Our every cell, organ, microorganism and substance is a resonant body that generates vibrations at specific frequencies, thereby creating a vital field. The body’s cells pass on impulses via these frequencies and communicate with one another via their vital fields.
DIAGNOSIS In just 12 minutes, we measure 200 million data points to identify stressors and their locations in the body. This makes it possible to eliminate interference fields and take preventive measures before the onset of an illness. THERAPY Vital field therapy harmonises and supports intracellular communication by regulating frequencies. » Stimulates cellular metabolism and detoxification » Regenerates and revitalises cell function » Stimulates self-healing » Inhibits inflammatory processes » Regenerates the digestive tract » Boosts the immune system » Supports pain therapy » Assists stress management
Stressors such as toxins, pesticides, electrosmog, poor nutrition, lack of sleep and stress – of course – damage our cells, impairing their energetic vibration. When the cells’ frequencies are disturbed, they cannot communicate smoothly. Frequency medicine allows us to provide gentle, non-invasive and non-chemical vital field analysis and regulation. Based on scientific research in quantum physics and frequency medicine, Vital Field technology by Global Diagnostics is revolutionary.

Join us on a liberating path towards holistic health with the help of the ancient arts of meditation and mindfulness. When is the right time to meditate? Whenever you feel like stepping away from routines, problems and worries. When you need to let go and be in the here and now. What do you feel while meditating? The practice involves becoming fully aware of your body and all of its tensions, followed by total relaxation.
T

What if we found a way to reconnect with ourselves and became self-aware with every fibre of our bodies and minds? With the right techniques at the right time, we can quieten the endless ruminations and anxieties that stop us living in the here and now.
… in the Middle Ages, the word ‘meditation’ – from Latin meditatum – meant to think deeply about spiritual or philosophical issues? Today the meaning is often reduced to its relaxing effects, although the objective of many forms of meditation is to energise the mind. … more than 300 meditation techniques originate from Hinduism, Buddhism and Taoism?
TH E EFFEC TS » You perceive your own body more intensely and in its entirety. » Personal imbalances and blockages are easier to identify. » As self-awareness improves, you may see your own body with greater compassion and understanding. » You feel calmer overall. Stress and insecurities diminish and so you are more likely to perceive a challenge as an opportunity.
… meditating can make people more resilient to stress and less sensitive to pain? ... meditation can help delay brain ageing and worries about forgetfulness and dementia? ... meditation is a cognitive process that can bring about a more compassionate, contented and peaceful view of the self and fellow human beings?

In keeping with nature’s rhythms, at the Ayurveda Resort Mandira we meditate on the cycle of the year. Each of the four seasons is enriching in its own way. » Spring awakens the inner garden: a time to sow the seeds for a new beginning. Anger and rage can be redirected, becoming driving forces instead. » Summer is the time for the inner fire: allowing our potential to blossom. We can rejoice in the season’s energy and zest for life. » Autumn is a time for letting go. What are the thought patterns and behaviours that need to be discarded for best benefit? The result is thankfulness. » Winter is the season of tranquillity and reflection: to go deep within to experience the inner light and locate the essence of our being and its quiet, inexhaustible power.

Sounds great: movement strengthens, releases tension, and boosts energy – but not all movement works for everyone: they have to find the right form for them. The first step towards exercise joy is working out what meets your specific needs and fits in with your life and routine.
Somatics
At the Ayurveda Resort Mandira, we have developed a varied activity programme to stimulate body and mind in line with your individual needs. Variety is key – the ideal solution blends gentle exercises and challenging training to rebalance your body.
Somatic education was originally developed by Dr Thomas Hanna, a student of Moshé Feldenkrais. According to its philosophy, natural, healthy movement is always smooth and pain-free. When this is not the case, there are always reasons: our bodies’ muscle reflexes are reactions to daily stresses and our posture reflects physical and psychological issues and injuries. Over time, these reflexes become exclusively experienced as pain (sensory motor amnesia), and this can result in chronic muscle tension and related internal problems. Straightforward somatic exercises involve simple, smooth and gentle movements that resolve this tension and pain, improving long-term quality of life.
