HOTEL TIROL SUMMER 2018
EDITORIAL A SUCCESSFUL START The first (winter) season at the ‘new’ Hotel Tirol has been a great success. The Gipfel SPA and new rooms have been well received, and the hosts have settled in nicely. Lukas and Michael – two from the next generation of Hotel Tirol hosts – put a few questions to their parents Manuela and Hubert Pregenzer on their impressions of the first season and their funniest moment so far... Lukas & Michael: So, Mum and Dad, have you settled in at your new hotel yet? We feel completely at home already, but how about you? Hubert & Manuela: So do we – we immediately felt comfortable here. This was mainly because we were able to put our visions and plans of the last few years into practice to make the place exactly as we’d imagined. The new hotel has brought us a lot of happiness and fun. Lukas: And what do our guests think of the new rooms and facilities? Manuela: All of the feedback we’ve had has been positive. This, of course, is extremely gratifying to us – our ultimate
goal is for our guests to really enjoy their stay. Michael: What do the guests like best? Hubert: Our Gipfel SPA with stunning infinity pool has been particularly well received – largely due to the spectacular view of the Tyrolean mountains. Manuela: The guests also really like our new themed rooms and suites, which include The Tyrolean, The Alpinist, The Skier and The Forest Wanderer. They also really appreciate the newly designed dining room with spacious buffet area and the friendly and personal service we continue to offer. Lukas: Have there been any funny moments? Hubert [chuckling]: Yes, actually. Two couples met in the infinity pool – one wearing bathing suits, the other naked. I think both must have wondered whether they were breaking the rules. Manuela: The next day the two couples bumped into each other in the pool, but this time it was the other way round. One was wearing bathing suits, the other naked. All four naturally had a good laugh about it – and a holiday friendship was formed. Michael: Did all of the new features work perfectly right from the very start? Hubert: After the major renovation work, which also involved a lot of new technology, it was full-speed ahead for the opening. Thankfully, our core employees ensured it ran as smoothly as possible. Lukas: Which part of the ‘new’ Hotel Tirol do you love the most? Hubert & Manuela: All of it! But our very favourite part is our Sky Table with its glorious view across the rooftops of Fiss.

HOTEL TIROL SUMMER 2018
We are proud of our ‘new’ Hotel Tirol and delighted to be celebrating our 60-year anniversary this year with you. We have put together some fantastic packages!
ANNIVERSARY WEEKS 60 YEARS OF HOTEL TIROL 30.06 – 14.07.2018
TIROL The story of the Hotel Tirol in Fiss started 60 years ago when Dora Pregenzer (mother to current host Hubert) offered up a small attic room to holiday guests along with meals. Today, six decades later, the Hotel Tirol is a lifestyle hotel with Alpine-themed rooms and Gipfel SPA – a great reflection of our Alpine surroundings and Alpine art. Therefore, it’s only fitting that we celebrate our 60th year with an excellent anniversary package and events for our guests. Even the former German Chancellor Kurt Georg Kiesinger appreciated the virtues of the guesthouse, despite it only being small at the time. In 1958 he came for lunch and his entry in the guestbook is still there today. Just a few years later the guesthouse required refurbishment and conversion into a hotel, so a number of extensions and renovations followed. With the construction of the first underground garage in Fiss in 1986, the hotel set a milestone. The conversion of the guesthouse into a hotel was completed with the addition of the fourth floor. In 1988 foundations were laid for the high-end spa area with the construction of the first sauna, steam room and quiet zone.
Purchasing the neighbouring building finally made it possible to build the first themed rooms – the predecessors to the new Alpine-themed rooms, The Alpinist, The Forest Wanderer, The Tyrolean and The Skier, last year. The hotel has been continually renovated with investments made in its quality and infrastructure. A major step was the construction of our PleasureLounge, which is more than just a beautiful restaurant, it also offers a fabulous meeting place for celebrations or literary and musical events. In 2017 no stone was left unturned as a huge renovation took place – from the underground garage to the fourth floor: the renovation included 22 new rooms, including 14 Alpine-themed rooms, the Gipfel SPA on the fourth floor including extra special rooftop infinity pool and the redesign of the dining room.
• 7 nights • Hotel Tirol luxury board • Use of the Gipfel SPA, rooftop infinity pool & Family Spa • Breakfast with your hosts: ‘The best Tyrolean fare from past to present’ We love... - Coffee - Bread and toppings - Eggs Benedict - Pancakes - Grandma’s jams • Happy birthday – a Tyrolean gala • An evening of culinary delights: sample the tastes of Tyrol – think fried pastries like Brodakrapfen, Schmalznudeln, Blattl and Kiachl! Tyrolean musicians provide the accompanying entertainment. • Cheese tasting • Kitchen party with music • Cocktails in the Sky – after-dinner party with cocktail menu • Jazz brunch • SUPER. SUMMER. THE ALPINE-THEMED ROOMS and artist Monika Maslowska
THE SKIER
‘Everything can be illustrated. Every illustration tells a story.’
Winter in the Tyrolean mountains is inseparably connected to fun on the slopes. And our Skier is clearly really enjoying the Alpine runs and magnificent white snowflakes. For a truly Tyrolean stay!
Monika Maslowska
We asked Innsbruck artist Monika Maslowska to tell the story of the Hotel Tirol and the values we represent through her whimsical illustrations. Without further ado, the multi-award-winning graphic artist and illustrator born in Warsaw in 1977 drafted the four typical representatives of the Alpine region in our hotel: The Tyrolean, The Alpinist, The Forest Wanderer and The Skier. Both filigree and expressive in her style, the artist embodied the characteristic traits and features of Tyrol and its inhabitants. The 14 Alpine-themed rooms – furnished with Alpine materials such as pine, loden, linen and stone – create a home-from-home environment.

THE TYROLEAN Unmistakeable, truly Tyrolean from tip to toe, through and through! Wearing a stylish dirndl with smart hat and accompanied by her accordion, she exudes Tyrolean joie de vivre and comfort – the ideal representative for our hotel. Our ambience combines Tyrolean tradition with the wit and lifestyle of today.
THE TYROLEAN MOUNTAINS At Hotel Tirol & our new themed rooms
THE FOREST WANDERER Like the Alpinist, the Forest Wanderer has a special connection to the local fauna and flora. Bare-footed and lightly ambling through the forest, she gives a feeling of inner peace, freedom and independence – exactly as you should feel on holiday.
THE ALPINIST A personification of the inspiring Tyrolean mountains and their wealth of possibilities, the sporty and adventurous Alpinist represents the sustainable bond between human beings and nature in the Alpine environment.

We rely entirely on natural products and local ingredients to give you a thoroughly indulgent experience. TRUE TYROLEAN DINING ‘Here, at the Hotel Tirol, we know what tastes good and are proud of the regional products we use from our farmers and producers. We make everything we can ourselves – from baking our own bread to collecting honey from our own bees and venison from Hubert’s own hunt! All other ingredients are sourced primarily from regional producers and suppliers after they undergo rigorous checks. The basic products we keep in our Tyrolean kitchen include natural cheeses from the Lechtal Valley, potatoes from the Pitztal Valley, Fisser Imperial Gerste barley, local eggs, meat and vegetables sourced from around Innsbruck. We hope you enjoy the food and many happy moments in one of our restaurants!’ SKY TABLE Exquisite timber table with a view – heavenly conviviality for the eyes and palate Carved from a mighty tree, our large, rustic wooden table on the fourth floor of the hotel invites you to take a seat. With space for eight to ten people, guests are treated to a truly spectacular view of Fiss and the Tyrolean mountains whilst enjoying delicious specialities from our kitchen. We’d be delighted to reserve the Sky Table for friends and family at your private event.

LET’S TALK LARGE Wine – insider tips from Hubert Pregenzer The Tirolerin asked Hubert Pregenzer about his passion for large format bottles and the special tipples he keeps in the Hotel Tirol’s cellar. Tirolerin: Not much beats a tasty Tyrolean Jause with a hearty beer or good wine. One of the first things you notice as you come into the Hotel Tirol is that many of the bottles are really rather large! Please explain to us laypersons, what’s so special about large-format wine bottles? Hubert: The large-format bottles really are special. Tasting top wines produced by Austrian and international winemakers when poured from big bottles is an extraordinary experience. The larger the vessel, the more slowly – and better – a wine matures. Only really good wines that are suitable for storing are filled into large bottles which means that size really does matter! Tirolerin: How come you have developed such a passion for large-format bottles? Hubert: I never tire of uncorking a large bottle and tasting the first sip. Most of our guests also love to try the wines from the large
bottles to get into the mood for the evening. Tirolerin: How do you choose your wines – and do you have any favourite wine-growing regions? Hubert: Our main focus is on Austria’s top wine regions – we like to visit and make new discoveries. However, there are quite a few international wines that we wouldn’t be without! Tirolerin: Thanks for allowing us to interview you and: ‘Bottoms up!’

BECAUSE THE TYROLEANS LOVE THE TYROL … Events around Tyrol... LET THE MUSIC PLAY! Musical entertainment on the high plateau At the end of June, three famous brass bands from Tyrol, Switzerland and South Tyrol will be performing and making the idyllic Fiss on the sunny high plateau of Serfaus-FissLadis alive with the sound of music. Each lasting around 75 minutes, the concerts are free of charge and cover the full sound spectrum of brass instruments – from traditional, classic and symphonic to contemporary, marching music and popular songs. The concerts are held on an open-air stage on Fonnesplatz in Fiss against a backdrop of impressive mountain views.
KUNST AM BERG ART EXHIBITION 2018 Look, admire and enjoy Artistic and gourmet delights 2,440 metres above sea level. As part of Culinary Autumn in Fiss, artists of different genres from all over Europe are set to gather again on the Schönjoch nearby in Fiss from 15 September to 5 October to work on and exhibit their pieces. They will include painters, potters, felt makers and turners, as well as stonemasons, sculptors and woodcarvers. As a visitor, not only are you given the chance to follow the design process live, you will also find out a lot of interesting information about ancient handicrafts. At the final symposium artists and visitors will finish off with a lively exchange of ideas at the Panoramarestaurant BergDiamant. There will also be the opportunity to purchase the works. 16

CULINARY AUTUMN. TYROL. 09.09 – 20.10.2018 Culinary autumn 2018 is all about Fisser Imperial Gerste barley. Grown and refined in Fiss, cultivated in three continents of the globe. The Fisser Imperial Gerste barley, an ancient variety of grain, was grown in Fiss by farmer Karl Röck during the inter-war years. It was since forgotten. Many years ago, farmers from the Tyrolean Oberland area began to cultivate the almost-extinct variety of grain again (using remainders from the grain gene bank).
HIGHLIGHTS OF THE CULINARY AUTUMN • Summr Huangart. Serfaus. Cookery courses in the mountain restaurants. • Tractor and vintage car meet. Evening concerts by the Musikkapellen. • Kunst am Berg art exhibition. Fiss. Theatre performances. • Fountain Festival. Fiss. THE LATEST TREND even the Forest Wanderer rides an e-bike
The Forest Wanderer isn’t very keen on overly strenuous outdoor activities, preferring leisurely days out instead. Now she has discovered her ideal piece of sporting equipment – the e-bike. Cycling doesn’t necessarily have to entail great physical exertion or thrills. Get a little ‘push in the right direction’ by swapping the mountain bike for an e-bike. The Forest Wanderer loves her new method of transportation. ‘Too much physical exertion distracts me from nature’s secrets and beauty’, she says. Naturally, at first sight it may seem strange that the Forest Wanderer has become the ‘Forest Cycler’. ‘But why should I stick to exploring on foot?’ she asks. ‘The e-bike wonderfully extends the range of my adventures’, raves the nature lover. E-BIKES FOR FREEWHEELERS The sunny plateau has a large fleet of e-bikes available for guests to hire. The nippy motorised bicycles have been adapted for use in the mountains. A comprehensive network of charging points prevents you from running out of ‘juice’ during your journey. So hop on and start exploring!

BIKE PARK Fearlessly hit the trails at the Bike Park Serfaus-Fiss-Ladis
The Hotel Tirol’s Alpinist is set apart by her fearlessness and lust for adventure. On the high plateau of Serfaus-Fiss-Ladis she finds numerous opportunities for climbing the rocks and walls. But there is another passion she indulges in: mountain biking. And because she has no fear, she is particularly fond of the trails at the Bike Park Serfaus-Fiss-Ladis. MOUNTAIN BIKE PLUS ‘Taking the mountain bike on demanding tours up to mountain huts is second nature to me’, explains the Alpinist. ‘Ultimately, climbing is all about getting up to the top quickly.’ To keep her going until she reaches her refreshment stop at the mountain hut, she likes to take along a sweet snack. She openly admits to taking the cable car on occasion to transport her bike up. ‘Everyone needs a little rest now and again’, she says. For her the best is yet to come. It is the rapid descent downhill to the valley that really gets her heart pumping.

BIKEPARK ACTION The Alpinist is often a well-received guest at the new Bike Park Serfaus-Fiss-Ladis. This is a very popular spot amongst daring bikers, and the Alpinist certainly isn’t lacking in courage. Beginner, intermediate and expert bikers can choose between freeride and downhill trails for various skill levels and test their skills on jumplines with over 40 jumps, or on the steep natural terrain with plenty of drops, roots and rocks. The blue-marked ‘easy trails’ are ideal for beginners and families. No need for lots of experience for these, but downhill fun is always guaranteed. The red trails are only for intermediate riders, whereas the black trails offer extra action-packed fun for those experienced on a bike. With names like Morning Glory, Supernatural and Hill Bill, who wouldn’t want to grab their mountain bike and hit the trails? ‘The black trails are my favourite’, says the intrepid Alpinist. There are a number of additional areas at the park. Junior mountain bikers have fun at the Kids Park, which is right next to the Waldbahn cable car’s valley terminus. It’s a child-friendly practice course with mini obstacles. The Bike Park’s guides are on hand in the training area to teach beginners the tricks they need to know to master their first downhill runs – safely and enjoyably. Bicycles and protective gear can be hired from the Bike Park’s shop. ‘I’m already looking forward to the next time!’ says the Alpinist.

Hiking on the sunny plateau equates to an outdoor wellness activity. ‘I love hiking in summer and autumn’, the Forest Wanderer exclaims, thinking about her first tours. There are numerous gentle and well-marked hiking trails on the sunny plateau of Serfaus-Fiss-Ladis, with plenty of spots to relax and enjoy the view in hammocks and wellbeing loungers. Leisurely footpaths alternate with trails to glorious viewing platforms, with numerous routes leading to mountain huts. ‘I wouldn’t want to be anywhere else’, the Forest Wanderer cheerfully declares. Families can take their pick from a range of pushchair-friendly trails, and the cable cars can drop you off at starting points at great heights without any physical exertion – ideal for guests with young children and baggage. The Forest Wanderer reveals a few hiking routes very close to her heart: ‘I won’t let you into all of my insider tips though – I’d rather do that when we’re together in Tyrol!’ says the Forest Wanderer with a twinkle in her eye.

Schmugglersteig, the smugglers’ trail that leads from Lazid in Serfaus to the Hexensee hut: this slightly more demanding hike takes you hot on the track of the region’s smugglers. Information boards along the way tell the story of the fearless people of Serfaus who wouldn’t let the dangers of the postwar years stop them from smuggling goods into Innsbruck from nearby Samnaun in Switzerland. Fiss Energy & Senses Trail: this trail challenges your senses and boosts emotional equilibrium. There are five special rest stops along the way that invite walkers to linger and reflect. Water Trail in Ladis: the hike leads past rushing brooks, huge wellsprings, cascades and ‘droplet’ benches. HOTEL TIROL SUMMER 2018

Tours lead up gentle ascents, some past picturesque mountain lakes, through beautifully fragrant Alpine pastures and steep meadow edges. But this isn’t where the Forest Wanderer feels most at home. ‘Great ascents to the ridges and peaks aren’t really for me. I leave these challenges to my friend, the Alpinist.’
