Craniosacral therapy

The skull – your flexible friend

Craniosacral therapy: how does it work and what are its uses? Some notions have been held to be true for so long that nobody ever questions them any more. We 'know', for example, that a baby's fontanelle slowly closes until the skull becomes a hard, inflexible bone. Because the movement of the skull bones was imperceptible in the past, there seemed to be no reason to doubt this idea. In the early 1970s, however, the American osteopath John E. Upledger made a chance discovery during surgery on a patient; he found that the cranial membranes were subject to rhythmic movement. He and other scientists conducted experiments to prove that this movement did indeed exist, which then led him to seek the cause. On the basis of his findings, Dr Upledger subsequently developed a treatment

The craniosacral system is a hydraulic system, which

system. This is responsible for many more functions than one might at first assume: movement and coordination, but also bodily functions such as breathing, digestion and cardiac rhythm. Furthermore, the pituitary gland forms part of the brain and regulates gland activity including thyroid, adrenal and ovaries. Disturbances of the craniosacral system as a result of tensions in the meninges impair or even block the movement of meninges and skull bones. Such disturbances affect the brain and spinal cord, and can result in the impairment of certain functions. Disturbances can arise as a result of accidents, infections, poisoning or following surgery.

Craniosacral therapy and talk therapy

Craniosacral therapy and talk therapy Ever since Sigmund Freud we have known that psychological conflicts can express themselves in physical complaints. Stress, psychological strain and internal as well as external conflicts reveal themselves in the form of muscle tension, energy blocks or chronic pain. Painful experiences are stored in the body. Hence we speak of carrying burdens on our shoulders, we feel bilious when we are grumpy and vent our spleen when we are angry.

The link between body and psyche is no longer a matter of

Modern Mayr Medicine and ENT

Recognising the coherences

Our close cooperation with eminent specialist consultants from every medical field has greatly contributed to the high quality of medical care that the Parkhotel Igls is able to offer. ParkZeit asked Professor Patrick Zorowka from the Department of Hearing, Voice and Language Disorders at Innsbruck University Hospital to talk to Dr Peter Gartner about the therapeutic synergies between ENT and Modern Mayr Medicine.

sleep disturbances and are at significantly greater risk of strokes. Moreover, they are prone to nodding off during the day – sometimes even whilst driving. The cause, according to Dr Peter Gartner, can often to be found in our eating habits: we eat too late, our diet is too fatty, or we drink too much alcohol. Too much of the good life is counterproductive, as is an excess of work. Modern Mayr Medicine gently leads people back to the natural state of moderation in all things.

When food goes down the wrong pipe Many older people experience dysphagia. Swallowing is a highly complex process that involves 50 muscle groups and numerous cranial nerves. Physiological changes that occur as we grow older can cause a decline in coordination, which further aggravates matters. Add to this the choking hazard of loose dentures and maybe also a cough, and the result can soon be pneumonia, which often remains undetected for a long time. Again, changing your diet or the way you prepare food can have a positive impact, and people who are affected by this problem

closed oesophageal sphincter

should eat food that is soft and tender. Professor Zorowka: 'A swallowing disorder can be the first sign of something more serious. This requires the kind of additional specialist investigation that we are able to carry out.'

Silent reflux Heartburn is a common symptom that can be an indication of a more serious stomach disorder. However, because this symptom tends to lead to exclusively stomach-related examinations, it is extremely rare for laryngopharyngeal (or silent) reflux to be diagnosed. This is when the

Reflux

oesophageal sphincters fail and so cause stomach acids to back up into the pharynx or larynx thereby causing

open oesophageal sphincter

inflammation. Coughs, mucous congestions, and a persistent

13

Modern Mayr Medicine and ENT

'lump' in the throat are all symptoms of this problem that requires the expertise of an otolaryngologist. The reflux itself can be treated successfully with the help of periodic Mayr therapies. A reflux can also trigger voice disorders, as can occupational factors. A specialist consultant is needed to determine whether the cause is a lack of vocal technique or an agerelated weakness. As we grow older we lose muscle mass in the larynx and our voices change. A speech therapist can also help to restore depth to the voice or reduce the amount of strain it is subjected to. Eating the right foods and chewing slowly (in other words: opting for a healthy diet) strengthens the gut and thus the immune system. Recurring inflammatory problems such as tonsillitis, bronchitis and colds are rooted in an overburdened immune system. Strengthening and cleansing the gut causes a reduction in the incidence of these types of infection. Unsurprisingly, changes in diet, lifestyle and habits make up the silver bullet that leads to long-term improvement.
