Are your children learning to ski? 8 tips for a great start
Winter sports have experienced a real boom in recent years, and most resorts have at least one ski school. Here in Berwang, we have one of Tyrol’s best ski schools – a recipient of the Tyrolean Ski Association’s Quality Award. Lena Hosp, snow sports instructor at Skischule Berwang and a receptionist at the Singer Sporthotel & SPA, knows what worries beginner skiers’ parents and answers their most pressing questions below.
Lena, how did you get into skiing? I grew up here in Berwang, so skiing has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember. My grandparents and my father were and still are involved in the ski school, and my grandma is still skiing at 77 years old. I was 2½ when I started skiing. When I was younger I competed in a lot of ski races – even won some of them – but nowadays I prefer to be more leisurely in my skiing. I trained as an instructor so that I could pass on my passion for skiing to others. Skiing is always huge fun, whether as a break from daily life, to have fun with friends, or as a holiday job at the ski school. © Sylvy Sprenger
Lena Hosp 21 years old • from Berwang • 2011: qualified as a snow sports instructor • Receptionist at the Singer Sporthotel & SPA since August 2014
Skiing makes us smart and stress-resistant Sports scientist and neuroscientist Frieder Beck has analysed a wide range of studies and determined why exercise and sport make us sharp and strong: Skiing enhances ... our ability to concentrate and stay calm in stressful situations ... our brain’s learning and motivation system ... selective attention ... our ability to suppress disruptive stimuli ... the distribution of the neurotransmitter dopamine, which we need to ‘save’ learned material ... positive learning experiences, which increases our motivation to do more ... our metabolism – which in turn guards against stress
Is everyone suited to skiing? Anyone can learn to ski, from children to seniors and people returning to the sport after a break. The only requirements are enthusiasm and some degree of physical fitness. At what age should you start learning? It’s obviously easier to learn the younger you are. Children learn by watching. They don’t think, they just copy the instructor. The Berwang ski resort recommends that children aged between 4 to 6 start by taking a day-long taster session. The ski instructor and the child’s parents then discuss whether to continue. But you can learn to ski at any age, not just when you’re little. Berwang is the perfect ski resort for this! What equipment is required? Your basic equipment consists of a ski suit, helmet, waterproof gloves and either ski goggles or sunglasses. The goggles or glasses are important, as the snow reflects sunlight whatever the weather conditions, and that can potentially cause snow blindness. To get the right footing in your ski boots, I recommend specialist ski socks. Ski boots, skis and poles are also available to hire. Does every pupil need a lift card? Beginners do not need a lift card to start with; first they learn to brake and turn in the practice area. If your child has already used the lift on a previous ski course, we recommend the purchase of a lift card before the start of this course. After a long break from skiing, skills tend to get a little rusty. Children have to get used to the feel of skis again, but it only usually takes a few turns for them to get their confidence and enjoyment back.
Are my children safe using the lifts during skiing lessons? As soon as the pupils can brake and turn safely, the ski instructor starts dry runs in the practice area to prepare for the T-bar lift. If a pupil has difficulties or is frightened, he or she can start off by taking the lift with the instructor. Children must always be accompanied by an adult on a chair lift because their safety is always paramount. Why would you recommend Berwang as a ski resort? Berwang offers ideal conditions for skiers of any ability. The ski school is the perfect practice area for beginners, while advanced skiers can explore the whole resort. Another advantage is that your nearest lift is only ever a few minutes’ walk away and the entire ski resort can be reached from any lift. I would highly recommend Berwang to any family. I’m a good skier, so why should I send my child to the ski school? Children learn a lot from their parents, which is important and how it should be, but they are still better off learning to ski or snowboard at the ski school. Thanks to my training, I know the questions that beginners ask themselves and how to answer these in the right way. Many things are obvious to good skiers, but hard to understand for beginners. Children also have an easier, faster and more enjoyable learning experience in groups. You get to enjoy your own holiday, while your children have lots of fun learning one of the best sports in the world with their peers. What is the highlight of a week’s skiing in Berwang? My personal favourite is the ski show every Tuesday. There’s a varied programme for all ages: freestyle skiers perform daring jumps, ski instructors demonstrate perfect skiing formations, the Kinderclub’s mascot Bobo makes an appearance, old-fashioned equipment is on display and much more... it’s an unforgettable evening. The children at the ski school also have a race every Thursday. This gives every child an opportunity to show what they have learned, and awards them a medal as a souvenir of their unforgettable ski course in one of the Alps’ most beautiful winter sports resorts.

New evening entertainment at Singer’s
Singer’s news from the slopes
We are delighted to announce that, after 45 years, one of the most common requests from Berwang’s visitors finally became a reality this summer. We have been working with Berwang’s council to consolidate almost all cable car and lift companies and their interests into one, efficient unit, the Bergbahnen Berwang.
of the resort’s slopes with better, faster snow cover, ensuring high snowfall even during winters with less snow. We are also planning new lifts in the Bilig and Thaneller areas and hope to complete these in 2017, or 2018 at the latest. The famous Kurvenlift will soon be a thing of the past!
How do our guests benefit?
This autumn will also see the start of work on the new Grünwaldquelle winter footpath. It will be around 1km long and have a safe ascent and descent of the Hochalm without crossing the slopes. Completion is scheduled for the start of the winter season.
Guests should definitely start noticing the difference this winter. Instead of two separate man made snow facilities at Thanellerkar and Sonnalmbahn, this autumn the two systems will be connected to produce additional snow on the Bilig slope. The aim here is to provide all
Throughout the years, our guests have been enchanted by pianists Jan, Richard and Jonny in Singer’s welcoming gallery lounge and hotel bar. Their classic yet contemporary songs have helped to create a great atmosphere in the evenings. So we have decided to go a step further! Starting in the 2016/17 winter season, we will be welcoming three or four different bands, groups, duos and musicians each week. The Lidoband (www.lido-band.at) will be here every second Monday, and the Grageelers will be playing Tyrolean ambient music nearly every week. A jazz band, harp player, Saitenstimmen with their traditional folk music, and even a blues band complete Singer’s evening entertainment.
We would love to know what you think of this musical enrichment and look forward to your feedback!

Everyone’s talking about detox:
Worth knowing Detox – a modern trend with ancient roots
tasty, healthy and nutritious
Fasting and purification have been part of complementary medical systems throughout history, and an alkaline diet can play a significant part. This means cutting out ‘acidic’ foods such as meat, cheese, milk, processed flour, confectionery, alcohol, coffee and black and green tea. The foundation of a detox diet is liquid food, such as smoothies, broths, juices and soups. We recommend a weekly detox twice a year, once in spring and once in the autumn.
It’s time for a spring clean! The time has come to rouse our bodies from their deep winter sleep and get them fit for spring. In preparation for the Easter feasting, we present our slow & gentle detox week for Lent. Our spring clean for body and soul includes an alkaline diet, Schüssler Salts, special detox SPA treatments, baths, body wraps, saunas, exercise, tips for everyday life and recipes for you to try when you get home.

Why does food play such an important role in detoxing? Thomas: Eating too much acidic and salty food causes the body to be thrown off balance, and can cause fatigue and lethargy. A less acidic diet allows the body to cleanse itself and expel toxins. A balanced diet, combined with specific treatments and activities stimulates self-purification and helps to make us fitter and more energetic. Do I need to change my diet from scratch? Are treats out of the question? Thomas: The important thing in any change of diet is that it should make you feel good. The odd glass of wine or hearty meal won’t make you ill or fat. My tip for anyone thinking about changing their diet is to remember that the more processed a food is, the more hidden fat, sugar and salt it generally contains. This is why I recommend avoiding processed foods during dietary changes. It may take longer to prepare, but at least you’ll know exactly what and how much of it you are eating.

What is the best way to detox? Singer’s SPA Director Theresa Gerlach asked nutrition expert and chef Thomas Kunath... Superfoods are a hot topic the moment. Which would you not be without? Thomas: New superfoods such as chia seeds, quinoa and amaranth are unjustly eclipsing our own versions. My superfood is oats. Made from whole grains, oats deliver high-quality proteins and complex carbohydrates, and supply the body with vital minerals and trace elements. I have oats with every breakfast, as muesli or porridge, lightly sweetened or softened overnight with soya milk, cinnamon and vanilla. What healthy dish is your favourite? Thomas: I love fish in all its forms. In summer, I prefer local freshwater fish like trout and char. A simple way to cook them is wrapped in parchment paper. The fish cooks without any fat and I add herbs and lemon to jazz up the recipe. I pair the dish with a spinach salad, dressed with a hemp seed vinaigrette and colourful tomatoes. This meal contains valuable fats and proteins while limiting carbohydrates.
