THE GENTLE SIDE OF WINTER. Berwang: a winter wonderland of winter sports and great gastronomy.

Dear Guests and Friends, 2017 was incredibly exciting and 2018 has so far proven calmer – at least as far as construction is concerned! But what a truly wonderful year we’ve had! Winter was a dream with copious snow and so many lovely guests. Summer also got off to a great start as we welcomed many of you to celebrate our 90th anniversary week. As temperatures over most of Europe reached dizzying heights, we enjoyed the most glorious summer weather here in the Tyrolean Zugspitz Arena. We and our guests breakfasted on the new hotel terrace, and we even dined al fresco on most nights. Nevertheless, temperatures remained pleasantly cool at night and daytime temperatures never rose above 28°C. To our great delight, our guests loved our refurbishments and we received much praise for the way in which we fused tradition and modernity. We and our little girl Leonie have also been discovering our favourite spots in the new areas – we’re particularly enamoured with the high tables in the S-Lounge: from there the panoramic views of Berwang are just brilliant! Winter is getting closer. We’re enjoying the colours and bounty of autumn but are also eagerly awaiting the first snowflakes! More refurbishment is set to take place this autumn as we replace our oldest Rainberg standard double rooms with new Raazalp, Galtjoch and Hönig rooms. With the plans almost finished, we can reveal that the new rooms are going to be bright, airy and attractive!

We wish you an enjoyable autumn and hope to welcome you back to Berwang soon! With kind regards,

Florian, Christina, Leonie and Gerti Singer

Ski-in & drink-out – the S-Lounge

SKI-IN & DRINK-OUT at Singer’s S-Lounge with delicious dishes, cool drinks and chilled music – the perfect ambience for your sophisticated après-ski afternoon.

e opened the doors to our new S-Lounge on 22 December 2017. A hotspot for skiers and après-ski enthusiasts, this area seats around 40 and offers same-level piste access, music, events, exquisite cuisine and much more. The S-Lounge is the place to be for lunch and daytime drinks beside the Berwang Sonnalmbahn ski run. The setting is chic and relaxed, the service excellent – under Michaela’s direction – and the views are simply second to none! Michaela, tell us about yourself. I was born in Carinthia – or Villach to be more precise – which is also where I trained as a restaurant manager. I’ve always loved gastronomy, whether on land or the high seas. As a barkeeper and also as a restaurant manager life has brought many experiences. But it’s at the S-Lounge where I have found true fulfilment – here I can be who I really am: a hostess who is passionate about helping others. What makes the S-Lounge so special? The S-Lounge is the perfect space for high-level après-ski. People love the relaxed setting with the piste on the doorstep and great connection to the village. Winter walkers, skiers, snowboarders, cross-country skiers – everyone can find their perfect spot here. Another benefit of our conservatory-style outdoor bar is that we can open it up on sunny days – the windows on the mountainfacing facade can be lowered to chest height – you feel part of the sky as you sit amongst the mountains. The S-Lounge is fitted

Michaela looks forward to welcoming you to our S-Lounge!

Your favourite S-Lounge drink and dish? A refreshing and fruity Alpsider is perfect on a sunny winter’s day. Produced 100% in Austria, this drink is made of pure apple cider and natural Alpine berries. On cold, stormy days, I go for a Lumumba – hot chocolate with a shot of rum and a dollop of whipped cream on top – warms the cockles of your heart! My absolute favourite dish is tarte flambée with Speck. The kitchen team follows an original French recipe to prepare a perfect thin base and then they cover it in delicious toppings. To make the most of the afternoon, I finish off with Kaiserschmarrn Deluxe with stewed plums, apple sauce, Grand Marnier, vanilla ice cream and cream – simply irresistible! Are there any events planned for this winter? Of course – preparations for surpassing last winter are already in full swing. There’s Après-Ski Gaudi every Saturday from 3pm to 6pm throughout the 2018/19 winter season offering the greatest hits of all time. After last year’s super-successful opening, we are organising a similar winter party this year. On 26 January we’ll rev up with live music, a snow bar, superb drinks, tasty food and many other highlights. If you check out our website and social media channels, you can stay up-to-date with all the S-Lounge events. The S-Lounge can be hired for your own private events too! Last question: what’s your après-ski tip? Make sure to give the ‘drunken apricot’ a try! Open daily from 11am to 7pm!

Ski-in & ski-out Fun on the slopes for young and old

At 1,336m above sea level, Berwang is the highest village in the Tyrolean Zugspitz Arena. In addition to guaranteed snow and a wide range of activities, the resort offers tranquillity and a warm welcome along with perfectly prepared pistes and a ski programme to suit all tastes. All of it amidst stunningly beautiful mountain scenery.

Florian Singer’s carving tip:

‘I love taking the Sonnalmbahn cable car up in the morning and then the Bärenbadlift down – the steep slopes directly below the station are perfect for carving. Another of my favourites is the descent to Bichlbach, as there you can curve downhill, taking the blue piste for a leisurely ski or the red for a racier experience.’

FLORIAN SINGER’S PERFECT FAMILY SKIING DAY IN BERWANG

A

fter a hearty breakfast, make your way into the village on the ski school shuttle – here in Berwang your car can have a break too as almost everything is easily accessible on foot. Once arrived at the Berwang-Bichlbach ski resort, Berwang’s ski school offers children a spacious skiing area. This is where many children try out their first moves – but there are also countless slopes for older and more experienced children which they explore safely and enjoyably in the company of instructors.

TOP SNOW CARD

1 ticket for the

whole ski resort The ticket is available for two days or more and valid in all seven of the Zugspitz Arena’s ski areas. All areas are easily accessible by bus or train.

After dropping off your children, head straight out to the slopes from the ski school assembly point. Whether you prefer to head towards the Sonnalmbahn or the Thaneller, there are plenty of blue and red pistes in all directions ready for you to carve your turns. It’s good to know that you can keep an eye on your children virtually all of the time, as the ski school assembly point is at the centre of the resort. This means you can comfortably pick up your children and eat lunch together – the Egghof Sunjet takes you to our S-Lounge where we offer skiers young and old a wide range of delicious dishes and brilliant beverages. It’s located adjacent to the Sonnalmbahn lower terminus, so you can get back to the slopes straight after lunch. For a real treat, return the children to the ski school and take the Thanellerkarlift to the Rastkopflift where you will find completely natural snow slopes! With a gradient of almost 45%, the steep slope is the ‘icing on the cake’. The slopes to the north of the Rastkopflift are also superb for skiing throughout the winter. Enjoy ski and snow fun against the mesmerising backdrop of the Lechtal Alps and Tannheim Mountains from December to March! At 4pm, it’s time for parents to head back to the ski school assembly point to take part in the daily farewell dance with Bobo and all of the ski school children – a perfect day of skiing for young and old draws to a close, but everyone’s already looking forward to tomorrow’s adventures...

T

he Tyrolean Zugspitz Arena has a great deal to offer away from the pistes: from winter walks in the romantic Biligwald forest to snowshoe hikes and cross-country skiing on numerous superbly groomed runs – it’s a truly guest-friendly winter holiday destination for all! Leonie Singer’s tip for non-skiers and children under three: ‘A walk through the Biligwald forest is a must. The cleared winter hiking trail is suitable for pushchairs and children’s toboggans, plus it shows Berwang’s winter wonderland at its most appealing. The walk through the snowy forest and return to the village via the ski school assembly point takes around an hour. Should you still be in need of a little action, follow the Biligweg path to the Jägerhaus mountain hut and zoom down to the valley on a toboggan. Yippee!’

Singer’s tip:

The Berwang ski show is a highlight and must-see for all winter guests. Starting at 8.30pm every Tuesday, it’s an adventure for young and old. Berwang’s Power Team perform perfect formations and ski school mascot Bobo joins the ski instructors to demonstrate how skiing has changed over the decades, with the Nostalgia Team wearing 1930s skis and clothing! The daring Crazy Jumpers and the BerwangNamlos mountain rescue team ensure plenty of excitement, finishing off as always with our heroes of the night, the snow grooming vehicle team that make it all possible.

Winter magic

SINGER’S GENTLE WINTER WONDERLAND Berwang... charming, exciting and full of variety in one of Tyrol’s most beautiful regions.

Christina and Leonie Singer’s tip: ‘Just one toboggan ride isn’t usually enough but walking back up for a second is really quite strenuous. So we suggest you take the Egghof Sunjet lift up for your second or third go – that way the fun doesn’t have to stop!’ Cross-country skiing: sport and nature in synergy 110km of skating and classic style ski runs combine winter pleasure and sporting fun in Berwang and the Tyrolean Zugspitz Arena. The Moosloipe crosscountry ski run starts just a few metres from the hotel. This challenging ski run leads to the Berwang Moos in around half an hour. Two kilometres long, the flat run really lets you burn off energy! OUR TIP: Biathlon competitions are held in the Berwang Moos every Wednesday. For a small contribution you can compete against others in rifle shooting and crosscountry skiing on the two-kilometre run.

AT A GLANCE The gentle side of winter in the Tyrolean Zugspitz Arena • 60km of cleared winter hiking trails • 110km of cross-country ski runs – the Tyrolean Zugspitz Arena is a ‘certified cross-country ski holiday destination’ • Snowshoeing – with a guide on request • ‘Golfrundloipe’ run at the foot of the Zugspitze & night runs in Bichlbach and Heiterwang • Laser biathlons & biathlon taster sessions • Day & night tobogganing • Ice skating on natural and man-made skating rinks (some illuminated) • The Berwang Ski Show every Tuesday at 8.30pm

SINGER’S TEAM. Meet Cindy and Lisanne, our new Reception and Reservations Managers Cindy Mende – Reception Manager After finishing school in my hometown Dresden, I moved to Paris. After that I trained as a hotel management assistant in Germany. In 2013, after other positions in Paris, on Réunion in the Indian Ocean and in Saxon Switzerland, I worked at the Singer Sporthotel & SPA for the first time. I returned home after two years, but I couldn’t shake off my yearning for the mountains. I’ve been in the job of my dreams managing the reception team since the summer

of 2018. I’m delighted about this new challenge and thank the Singer family for their trust. I’m truly passionate about looking after our guests and ensuring they enjoy an unforgettable stay with us before they head home with happy smiles on their faces. Lisanne Thiele – Reservations Manager I come from the district town of Radebeul, near Dresden. But Tyrol has been my home for over 12 years. In 2005, I began my apprenticeship as a

hotel and catering assistant in Ellmau. After qualifying, I started my first role as a receptionist in the summer of 2008 for a family business in Lermoos. They had many French guests and that inspired me to improve my language skills, which led me to Nice for a while. Back in Tyrol, I worked as a receptionist and head of reception in various 4-star superior and 5-star hotels. Over two years ago I returned to the Singer Sporthotel & SPA and I’ve been running the reservations department since the summer of 2018. As the first point of contact for guests booking through us, I really enjoy creating tailor-made offers for their dream holiday in Berwang.
