RHYS EDWARDS

DIRECTOR OF RUGBY Welcome to Loughborough University, and to the Main Rugby pitch, where we host Wasps Ladies in our first Allianz Premier 15s home fixture. We are extremely excited to see fans back at the university, having not been able to at all, last season due to COVID restrictions. We very quickly realised last year how much we missed your support and are grateful that you are able to return. Last week saw us play the defending champions, Harlequins, who gave us a lesson in how to be clinical. The game started with the unfortunate injury to Emily Scarratt, who was making her first start at 10. We wish Emily well in her recovery, and look forward to her return. We managed to get ourselves back into the game at half time, with the score 19-10. However crucial errors in the 2nd Half proved costly and Quins were able to capitalise. This wasn’t a true reflection on what this group are capable of and we are looking forward to getting back out onto the field today. Our fixtures vs Wasps are always a great contest, which are hotly contested. I have no doubt that todays will be also. I would like to wish all our Scottish internationals good luck in their World Cup Qualifying campaign. Rachel Malcolm leads the team into the European Qualifying tournament. Good luck and we look forward to having them back in African Violet. Rhys Edwards Director of Rugby

MATCH REPORT

7

FULL TIME: HARLEQUINS 50, LIGHTNING 15 Loughborough Lightning started their 2021-22 Allianz Premier 15s campaign with an away trip to the Twickenham Stoop to face last year’s winners Harlequins. It was a tough start to the game for Lightning with a serious injury to Emily Scarratt at just 3 minutes. Shortly after Quins scored their first try as Captain Emily Scott found her way through the Lightning defence. This was followed moments later by another try from Quins winger Heather Cowell. Lightning started to take control of the game midway through the first half and with a solid lineout from 10 metres out the forwards mauled over the line giving

MATCH SUNDAYDAY: SEPTEM 05 BER

Lark Davies her first try of the season, starting her campaign to retain her title as the league’s highest scorer. Harlequins followed suit 10 minutes before the half with a driving maul try of their own, but Lightning responded through Sarah Hunter at 39 minutes with another driving maul, making the score Harlequins 19, Loughborough 10 at the half. The second half proved to be a tough 40 minutes for Lightning with Quins scoring 4 more tries. The final score of the game went to Lightning though, with Amanda Swartz scoring a try up the wing. Final score Harlequins 50, Lightning 15.

TODAYS OPPOSITION

WASPS

Dating from 1867, Wasps now hail from Twyford Avenue, West London, with players representing across men’s, ladies, and junior teams. Wasps Ladies (now known as Wasps) were founded in 1984 and have been involved in the Women’s Premiership since 1991. Former England international Giselle Mather returned to the club in 2016 to become Director of Rugby after a three-year stint previously where she won backto-back titles. Ahead of their first involvement in the Tyrrells Premier 15s season the club recruited a number of England

internationals such as Danielle Waterman and Rochelle Clark, and currently have a number of England 7s players in the ranks including Meg Jones, Celia Quansah and Abi Burton. The Club have finished consistently in the Top 4 of the table but, much like Loughborough Lightning, have yet to make it past the SemiFinal stage of the competition. Following a close defeat to Saracens last week in Round 1 of the Allianz Premier 15s Wasps will be looking to take their first win of the season today.
