RICHARD ALLEN

DIRECTOR OF FOOTBALL Good afternoon and a very warm welcome to the Loughborough University Stadium for our opening game of the 2021/22 season FA Women’s National League (Norther Prem) versus Hull City. This is an exciting day for all of us and the culmination of a lot of hard work by numerous people over a number of years. Playing our first league game as Loughborough Lightning is a real step forward in ensuring our women’s football offer is one of the best in the country. Hull come to us off the back of wins versus Lincoln City and their Veterans team in their final preseason games. Last Sunday we finished our preseason preparation with a convincing 5-0 win against Burton Albion. It was nice to finish off so strongly after a mixed set of preseason friendly results. We know it’s going to be a tough season with many of our opponents having invested quite heavily in both their infrastructure and players. With sadness we have to report the passing of Alum and former women’s player, Ria Melvin. Ria was heavily involved in all aspects of the women’s football programme and at only 26 far to young. In a mark of respect our players will be wearing black armbands and we will be holding a minutes applause to remember Ria prior to kick off. We are pleased to welcome the players, supporters and directors of Hull City and look forward to what we hope will be an exciting and entertaining game.

RIA MELVIN Today we will be holding a minute applause to remember Ria, a Loughborough graduate who sadly passed away last week. Ria was a massive part of the women’s football programme during her time at Loughborough and the Loughborough family will miss her greatly. Our thoughts are with her family and friends at this difficult time.

CAPTAIN There’s been a lot of changes in the off season, it’s an exciting time to be a Loughborough Lightning player.

The merger with the university has provided us with so many opportunities to develop, as footballers and people and we can’t wait to show what we’ve been working on throughout pre season. I think we’ve all really enjoyed being back and just playing football after what has been a disruptive few seasons. On the positives of this, we have regrouped and been successful in recruiting new players that not only added to the quality of squad but also the culture of our group. There’s no doubt this season will have its challenges, this league is tough but with the work ethic and talent we have in the squad, we are more prepared than ever before. We’ve set ourselves targets to accomplish and I’m looking forward to achieving them and that starts against Hull City today. I’m so pleased we are able to welcome friends, family and supporters back to our stadium as it feels like it’s been forever! We are determined to make a positive start to our debut season as Loughborough Lightning.

“Today we will also be holding a minute’s applause to remember Ria Melvin who sadly passed away last week. Although I didn’t know Ria personally, it is clear to see the impact she had during her time here at Loughborough and we would like to send our thoughts and best wishes to her friends and family.”

LOUGHBOROUGH LIGHTNING

FIRST LEAGUE GAME FOR LOUGHBOROUGH LIGHTNING It’s an incredibly exciting day for everyone involved at Loughborough Lightning; our first FAWNL fixture. It’s been quite a journey and a big thank you to everyone who has helped get us here. The team have been working hard over the last 6 weeks, training, gym, pre-season friendlies. It’s been a challenging but purposeful 6 weeks, and its been great to see the team gel together particularly in the past 7 days. I’m very proud of the team, players and staff and although we know today will be a hard fought fixture, I am very confident we will be celebrating 3 points when the whistle blows. by Issy Martin

LOUGHBOROUGH LIGHTNING FC

A BRIEF HISTORY

LOUGHBOROUGH FOXES Gail and Paul Fox founded Loughborough Foxes in 1999, known then as Shepshed Foxes until 2002. For their first 15 years, Foxes played in local leagues, before being promoted to the FA Women’s Northern Premier Division (the 3rd ranked tier of women’s football) in 2015. After the first season they suffered relegation but managed a promotion in 2018 to return to this tier. Winning this Midlands Division One title was actually a club record for Foxes, winning 22 games and drawing just 1.

LOUGHBOROUGH UNIVERSITY PERFORMANCE TEAM Loughborough Students Women’s Football Club offers many competitive opportunities. The performance team compete in the British Universities & Colleges Sports (BUCS) Northern Premier League. When possible, players are also supported to play “external football” alongside the programme, most notably with our partner Loughborough Foxes (Tier 3), but also other Tier 3 and Championship clubs. Each year Loughborough University invests a million pounds in performance sport, and a million pounds in facilities. Thanks to this investment, Director of Football Richard Allen is able to lead a professional programme of coaching and support.

As a first team performance squad member you will receive expert coaching, access to our world class facilities, heavily discounted Powerbase gym membership, strength and conditioning training, nutrition, sports science and sports medicine support. Within the programme players also have access to Performance Lifestyle support and our top athletes can apply for scholarships.

15

MERGING/ LIGHTNING LAUNCH The University’s performance team and the Loughborough Foxes have officially combined to launch a new Lightning programme that will compete nationally against some of the biggest names in the sport. The clubs have worked in close collaboration for a number of years now with Head Coach Issy Martin overseeing both programmes since her appointment at the University in September 2019.

Lightning will compete in the FA Northern Premier League where it will face teams including Burnley, Wolverhampton Wanderers, Nottingham Forest, and West Bromwich Albion.
