RICHARD ALLEN

DIRECTOR OF FOOTBALL Good afternoon and a very warm welcome to the Loughborough University Stadium for our FA Women’s National League (Norther Prem) game versus Sheffield United. Last weekend saw us draw 2-2 versus with Hull City in front of a crowd of just under 150 people. A great atmosphere and a lastminute equaliser to boot which made a draw almost feel like a win. We dominated the game and really deserved all 3 points but at 2-1 down entering the last minute we were pleased in the end to get the 1 point. Sheffield come to us off the back of a 0-4 home opening game defeat versus Burnley, so I’m sure they will be looking to get on track this afternoon. In last years truncated season we did go away to Sheffield and went down 3-1 so looking forward to putting that result right. Our Development Team also start their league campaign on Sunday 5th September away to Wolverhampton Wanderers Reserves. Please get down and support them as well. Home games will be played on Holywell 4 at 2pm and entry will be free. It has been nice to see spectators attending both our men’s and women’s fixtures. Players from both squads have also been attending each other’s fixtures which is great and show a real ‘togetherness. Please could I ask everybody to try and socially distance and also to wear face coverings in the lounge areas. Let’s keep each other safe.

We are pleased to welcome the players, supporters and directors of Sheffield United and look forward to what we hope will be an exciting and entertaining game. Richard Allen Director of Football

CHLOE YOUNG

CAPTAIN Last Sunday was a rollercoaster of emotions, it’s difficult to put into words how proud of our team I was and continue to be. A pre season of hard work, late nights and attention to detail was all preparation for that moment. There was nerves and excitement from the players, we knew we’d been given the tools to go out and perform, On reflection, we played well, stuck to our principles and you could see things we’d been practicing at training shining through. Unfortunately, we just didn’t take our chances and had to settle for a point. The manner in which we came back, after going 1-0 and then 2-1 down despite it

being against the run of play says a lot about the character and attitude of this team. Last week was about controlling our emotions, fighting for each other and putting on a performance to make Ria proud and I think we did that. This week is another great opportunity for us to challenge ourselves again and match that level of performance. Thank you to those who continue to support us week in, week out, it makes a huge difference!!

SHEFFIELD PREVIEW It was great to kick off Lightning’s FAWNL campaign last weekend with an entertaining first game of the season. I was incredibly proud of the team’s dominating performance against Hull, although disappointing not to get the 3 points deserved, Ella Powell’s last minute equaliser was emphatically celebrated by the players, staff and 140 in the stands! After another good week in training, we will be looking to replicate Sunday’s performance with a more clinical edge in the box. We are confident that the fixture v Sheffield, albeit a tough one, will be Lightning’s first 3 points. by Issy Martin

TODAYS OPPOSITION

SHEFFIELD FC Sheffield FC Women was formed in 2003 when previous team Norton Ladies affiliated with the oldest football club in the world, Sheffield FC. The Club started life in Division 1 East of the Yorkshire & Humberside Regional WFL, the bottom level of the women’s pyramid of football at the time, which became the North East Regional WFL in 2005/06. Having finished third, then runners up for two successive seasons, Sheffield finally won their first league title in 2007/08, and within the space of two more seasons, was promoted into the Northern Combination WFL, which the team won at the first attempt in 2010/11. Sheffield’s debut season at FA Women’s Premier League level saw the team finish as Northern Division runners up behind eventual champions Manchester City. The team picked up silverware for the third season running, courtesy of a first Sheffield & Hallamshire Women’s Challenge Cup title.

Sheffield went one better in the league in 2012/13 as they lifted the FA WPL Northern Division title for the very first time. They also repeated their success in the S&H Women’s Challenge Cup, beating Rotherham United 6-0 in the final. With promotion to the FA Women’s Super League not possible, Sheffield were forced to defend their FA WPL Northern Division crown in 2013/14, which they managed to do with five matches to go, ultimately finishing 15 points clear of runners up Preston North End. They added a third successive S&H Women’s Challenge Cup, but the highlight of the season was winning the FA WPL Cup by beating Cardiff City 6-2 in the final, crowning off a treble trophy winning season. In 2014/15, the first team missed out on a second successive FA WPL Cup losing on penalties in the final to Charlton Athletic, but the Sheffield & Hallamshire Women’s Challenge Cup was won for a fourth year running. The Club enjoyed a best ever run in the FA Women’s Cup by reaching the Fifth Round.

Sheffield FC won a third successive FA WPL Northern Division title, to secure a place in a first ever Championship Play Off Final in which an injury time winner saw Sheffield beat Portsmouth to become the first club to gain promotion on merit to the top flight of the game: the FA Women’s Super League. Under new first team manager Zoe Johnson, Sheffield secured a respectable fifth place finish in their debut FA WSL season in 2016 and reached the quarterfinals of the Continental Tyres Cup. The development team finished as runners up in both the FA WSL Northern Division and the League Cup, losing 2-1 in extra time to Arsenal. A string of poor results at the commencement of the 2019/20 season saw Oakenfold decide to step away, and Graham Abercrombie start his tenure of the women’s team. With experience at this level over the past eight years, Abercrombie is the ideal candidate to improve Sheffield FC Women’s fortunes over the coming years.

LOUGHBOROUGH LIGHTNING FC

A BRIEF HISTORY

LOUGHBOROUGH FOXES Gail and Paul Fox founded Loughborough Foxes in 1999, known then as Shepshed Foxes until 2002. For their first 15 years, Foxes played in local leagues, before being promoted to the FA Women’s Northern Premier Division (the 3rd ranked tier of women’s football) in 2015. After the first season they suffered relegation but managed a promotion in 2018 to return to this tier. Winning this Midlands Division One title was actually a club record for Foxes, winning 22 games and drawing just 1.

LOUGHBOROUGH UNIVERSITY PERFORMANCE TEAM Loughborough Students Women’s Football Club offers many competitive opportunities. The performance team compete in the British Universities & Colleges Sports (BUCS) Northern Premier League. When possible, players are also supported to play “external football” alongside the programme, most notably with our partner Loughborough Foxes (Tier 3), but also other Tier 3 and Championship clubs. Each year Loughborough University invests a million pounds in performance sport, and a million pounds in facilities. Thanks to this investment, Director of Football Richard Allen is able to lead a professional programme of coaching and support.

As a first team performance squad member you will receive expert coaching, access to our world class facilities, heavily discounted Powerbase gym membership, strength and conditioning training, nutrition, sports science and sports medicine support. Within the programme players also have access to Performance Lifestyle support and our top athletes can apply for scholarships.

15

MERGING/ LIGHTNING LAUNCH The University’s performance team and the Loughborough Foxes have officially combined to launch a new Lightning programme that will compete nationally against some of the biggest names in the sport. The clubs have worked in close collaboration for a number of years now with Head Coach Issy Martin overseeing both programmes since her appointment at the University in September 2019.

Lightning will compete in the FA Northern Premier League where it will face teams including Burnley, Wolverhampton Wanderers, Nottingham Forest, and West Bromwich Albion.
