RICHARD ALLEN
DIRECTOR OF FOOTBALL Good afternoon and a very warm welcome to the Loughborough University Stadium for our FA Women’s National League (Norther Prem) game versus Huddersfield. After feeling slightly disappointed dropping 2 points against Hull in our first game of the season it was pleasing to pick up all 3 after a comfortable 3-0 win v Sheffield. We know today’s game is going to be a much tougher affair. Huddersfield currently sit in 3rd place having won 2 games and drawn 1 so far this season. Last week saw all 4 of our men’s and women’s teams winning. Our win v Sheffield plus the development squad beating Doncaster Bells 5-2 and, on the Saturday, out men’s first team winning their FA Cup match v Newark and the development team winning its first MFL U21’s fixture v Nuneaton Borough. I hope we have many more weekend clean sweeps this season. Prior to our men’s FA Cup match, our long serving Performance Programme Administrator and men’s football club sec, Margaret Folwell, was presented with the United Counties League Administrator of the Season award. Much deserved and so pleased all her hard work and commitment has been recognised and rewarded. The comments on social media are testament to her standing in the game. Please could I ask everybody to try and socially distance and to wear face coverings in the lounge areas. Let’s keep each other safe.
We are pleased to welcome the players, supporters and directors of Huddersfield and look forward to what we hope will be an exciting and entertaining game. Richard Allen Director of Football

CAPTAIN We made history, our first 3 points as Loughborough Lightning and what a feeling it was. Last week, everything came together for us, our hard work and efforts at training and throughout the build up really showed. I thought our performance was convincing, we created lots of chances and enjoyed plenty of possession. We know there are still areas to develop but the attitude of this squad and the expectations we have of each other means we will continue to push to become even better. Training this week has been intense, we’ve continued to learn, grow as a group and the variety of it means we’re always trying new things. It’s also been great to welcome some new and old faces back into the squad as they regain fitness from injury or have returned from holiday. This weeks opposition will prove tough, we know they are a quick and technical team and we’re looking forward to the challenge. It’s another opportunity to play on our fantastic stadium pitch and welcome our fans back for the third week in a row!

TODAYS OPPOSITION
HUDDERSFIELD TOWN FC The club was formed in June 1988 as Huddersfield Ladies FC and joined the North-East Regional League Division 2 where, in their first season, they won the league Cup and were promoted to Division one as champions. Over the next few seasons there were signs that an exciting team was beginning to emerge and season 1992-3 saw them 3rd in the league and runners-up in the League Cup. At the end of 1992-3 season, Huddersfield Ladies merged with Huddersfield Town Juniors, becoming Huddersfield Town Ladies FC.
Humberside Premier League. However, in the same period a lot of time and effort was invested in producing a new crop of talented young players from within our own junior ranks. During the 2006/7 season the first team finished in second place in the first season of the North East Regional Women’s Premier Division. In the 2010/11 season the club won the NERWPL, league and cup double and gained promotion to the Northern Women’s Combination league under the management of Mickey Booth.
Season 1993-94 saw the 1st team carry all before them, losing only once all season and winning the League championship, the league cup, the Yorkshire cup. The following season saw the 1st team retain the league championship, winning all 16 league matches and scoring 101 goals in the process.
After 14 years in charge, Mickey decided to step down as first team manager at the end of the 2012/13 season.
Eventually Town were relegated twice over successive seasons to the Yorkshire and

Three excellent coaches were appointed with Glen Preston as manager, and Ashley Vickers and Fraser Green as his assistants for the 2013/14 season.
Women’s Combination league championship by a margin of 8 points and gaining promotion to the FAWPL Northern Division. After Glen left the club in 2016, Ashley Vickers took on the role of manager and led the team for the next four season in the FAWNL Northern Division. In the Summer of 2019 the club changed their name to Huddersfield Town Women FC. In March 2020, Jordan Wimpenny replaced Ashley as first team manager and before lockdown cut the season short, Town sat six points clear at the top of the division, losing only one league game and progressing to the Women’s FA Cup 5th round for the second time in three seasons. In August 2021, due to a change in his personal circumstances, Jordan stepped down from his role and, for the 2021/22 season has been replaced by the highly experienced Steve Appleton, who will be assisted by Alex Thomas, Sarah Dobby and Luke Haigh (gk coach).

LOUGHBOROUGH LIGHTNING FC
A BRIEF HISTORY
LOUGHBOROUGH FOXES Gail and Paul Fox founded Loughborough Foxes in 1999, known then as Shepshed Foxes until 2002. For their first 15 years, Foxes played in local leagues, before being promoted to the FA Women’s Northern Premier Division (the 3rd ranked tier of women’s football) in 2015. After the first season they suffered relegation but managed a promotion in 2018 to return to this tier. Winning this Midlands Division One title was actually a club record for Foxes, winning 22 games and drawing just 1.
LOUGHBOROUGH UNIVERSITY PERFORMANCE TEAM Loughborough Students Women’s Football Club offers many competitive opportunities. The performance team compete in the British Universities & Colleges Sports (BUCS) Northern Premier League. When possible, players are also supported to play “external football” alongside the programme, most notably with our partner Loughborough Foxes (Tier 3), but also other Tier 3 and Championship clubs. Each year Loughborough University invests a million pounds in performance sport, and a million pounds in facilities. Thanks to this investment, Director of Football Richard Allen is able to lead a professional programme of coaching and support.
As a first team performance squad member you will receive expert coaching, access to our world class facilities, heavily discounted Powerbase gym membership, strength and conditioning training, nutrition, sports science and sports medicine support. Within the programme players also have access to Performance Lifestyle support and our top athletes can apply for scholarships.

MERGING/ LIGHTNING LAUNCH The University’s performance team and the Loughborough Foxes have officially combined to launch a new Lightning programme that will compete nationally against some of the biggest names in the sport. The clubs have worked in close collaboration for a number of years now with Head Coach Issy Martin overseeing both programmes since her appointment at the University in September 2019.
Lightning will compete in the FA Northern Premier League where it will face teams including Burnley, Wolverhampton Wanderers, Nottingham Forest, and West Bromwich Albion.
