RICHARD ALLEN

DIRECTOR OF FOOTBALL Good afternoon and a very warm welcome to the Loughborough University Stadium for our FA Women’s National League (Norther Prem) game versus Stoke. We are looking forward to getting back on the pitch after last Sunday’s result versus Huddersfield. We knew it was going to be tough game but disappointed in the score line. On reflection we performed pretty well and at 2-1, we had our chances. Unfortunately, a couple of unforced errors cost us, and they comfortably pulled away. Today’s game sees us take on Stoke. They have narrowly lost all 3 of their opening games but that included games against Fylde and Derby County. Having beaten them in a close pre-season game we know we are in for a tough game. They have also lost their Head Coach this week so I’m sure their players will be looking to impress the new boss. Issy Martin and her team have been working hard this week to prepare for today’s game and I’m sure we will see a positive reaction in terms of performance and result. Please could I ask everybody to try and socially distance and to wear face coverings in the lounge areas. Let’s keep each other safe.

We are pleased to welcome the players, supporters and directors of Stoke and look forward to what we hope will be an exciting and entertaining game. Richard Allen Director of Football

CAPTAIN This week is all about learning from mistakes, showing character to bounce back after last weeks disappointment. We don’t feel we gave the best account of ourselves against Huddersfield, they were a good team but we know we didn’t perform anywhere near where we know we can and should be. We showed character to respond to conceding an early goal, got back in the game shortly before half time and were on the up. This week we need to make sure we take our chances and are up for the fight as I’m sure Stoke will be. Training has been as intense as ever, this group of players continue to push and challenge each other to become the best version of themselves and it’s such a positive environment to be in, I feel so lucky to be a part of it. We’ve spent a lot of time together over the past few weeks, I think as we grow you’ll start to see greater understanding and relationships being built all over the pitch which is exciting to. Once again, we are looking forward to seeing fans, friends and family at the stadium to support us - thank you everyone!

STOKE CITY FC A WOMEN’S TEAM REPRESENTING STOKE CITY WAS FORMED IN THE SUMMER OF 2001. The inaugural season in the West Midlands League Division One ended in success as the team- who were known as Stoke City Ladies for their first 18 years in existence- finished third in the table and gained promotion via the play-offs. From there they consolidated their position in the West Midland Premier Division and began entering the Staffordshire County Ladies Challenge Cup.

A first final was reached in 2007, which they won, and they have now lifted the trophy 15 times. Promotion to the Midland Women’s Combination was secured in 2009 as the team finished as Champions, whilst an historic treble was earned in 2013 with the Ladies scooping the league championship, League Cup and County Cup. That title saw the Ladies promoted to the FA Women’s Premier League (North) Currently led by Head Coach Alena Moulton, the team moved to their new home at Community Drive in the summer of 2016 and the Club continues to make positive strides both on and off the pitch.

LOUGHBOROUGH LIGHTNING FC

A BRIEF HISTORY

LOUGHBOROUGH FOXES Gail and Paul Fox founded Loughborough Foxes in 1999, known then as Shepshed Foxes until 2002. For their first 15 years, Foxes played in local leagues, before being promoted to the FA Women’s Northern Premier Division (the 3rd ranked tier of women’s football) in 2015. After the first season they suffered relegation but managed a promotion in 2018 to return to this tier. Winning this Midlands Division One title was actually a club record for Foxes, winning 22 games and drawing just 1.

LOUGHBOROUGH UNIVERSITY PERFORMANCE TEAM Loughborough Students Women’s Football Club offers many competitive opportunities. The performance team compete in the British Universities & Colleges Sports (BUCS) Northern Premier League. When possible, players are also supported to play “external football” alongside the programme, most notably with our partner Loughborough Foxes (Tier 3), but also other Tier 3 and Championship clubs. Each year Loughborough University invests a million pounds in performance sport, and a million pounds in facilities. Thanks to this investment, Director of Football Richard Allen is able to lead a professional programme of coaching and support.

As a first team performance squad member you will receive expert coaching, access to our world class facilities, heavily discounted Powerbase gym membership, strength and conditioning training, nutrition, sports science and sports medicine support. Within the programme players also have access to Performance Lifestyle support and our top athletes can apply for scholarships.

15

MERGING/ LIGHTNING LAUNCH The University’s performance team and the Loughborough Foxes have officially combined to launch a new Lightning programme that will compete nationally against some of the biggest names in the sport. The clubs have worked in close collaboration for a number of years now with Head Coach Issy Martin overseeing both programmes since her appointment at the University in September 2019.

Lightning will compete in the FA Northern Premier League where it will face teams including Burnley, Wolverhampton Wanderers, Nottingham Forest, and West Bromwich Albion.
