RHYS EDWARDS
DIRECTOR OF RUGBY Welcome all to Loughborough University for another Allianz Premier 15s Fixture. Today’s match is our Freshers Week ‘Big Match’ which sees us welcome Worcester Warriors to Epinal Way and showcase the Women’s game at its highest level. Worcester come to Loughborough looking to get back to winning ways having had some great battles over the last few weeks. The Premier 15s this year is proving to be a very competitive league with many teams now capable of beating each other, which shows the growth of the game. It also means we now have to continually ensure that we perform consistently week in week out. We head into today’s game full of confidence following our victory against DMP last week, however we know that we need to raise our accuracy to ensure that we perform. Today sees us introduce 2 more players to the #LightningFamily with Scottish Internationals Megan Gaffney and Christine Belisle joining us following their fantastic performances in the recent World Cup Qualifiers. We also welcome back Rachel Malcolm, who led the Scotland team superbly, and Jenny Maxwell. Congratulations must also go to our six England Players who have been called into the Red Roses Autumn Internationals Squad, in particular Sadia Kabeya, who has been exceptional in her performances this season so far.
We hope that you enjoy today and please come say hello post game in JCs bar. Rhys Edwards Director of Rugby

LOUGHBOROUGH TAKE MAXIMUM POINTS FROM TRIP TO THE ARENA. Loughborough Lightning notched their first win of the Premier 15s season with a 0-59 victory over DMP Durham Sharks at the Darlington Arena. Rhys Edwards’ side ran in 9 tries, including a hat trick for replacement hooker Lark Davies. Loughborough opened the scoring inside 10 minutes when scrum half Megan Davey sniped over from close range after a driving maul. Lightning doubled their

advantage shortly after when Iona Antwis powered over, before a third try from Isla Alejandro who finished well in the far corner after picking the ball up brilliantly off her toes. The bonus point try came just after the half hour mark, when more pressure from the forwards yielded a try for back row Sara Svoboda. The Sharks then enjoyed their best spell of the game as they strung together phases in the Lightning 22. Bryony Field was sent to bin after stopping George Roberts illegally after a quick tap from the Sharks scrum half, however the hosts were unable to capitalise on their numerical advantage. Instead, it was the visitors who registered the final score of the half through Lark Davies on the eve of half time, leaving the scores at 0-31. The second half began in much closer fashion, with the hosts growing into the game and holding out Loughborough until the hour mark. Their resistance was broken on 61 minutes when Detysha Harper powered over as Lightning continued their forward dominance. A couple of breaks from full back Holly Thorpe and centre Jess Dadds gave Sharks

some bright moments, however Loughborough extended their lead with 2 tries in as many minutes. First Lark Davies dotted down from another driving maul, before some quick-thinking Georgina Tasker brought Loughborough their 8th try of the afternoon. Davies then crossed for her hat trick in the final stages to round off an impressive win for the visitors. BY Tom Bulmer Photos by Andy Hall

LOUGHBOROUGH LIGHTNING V WORCESTER WARRIORS
Worcester Warriors Women (formerly known as Worcester Valkyries) are one of only ten clubs nationally that compete at the highest level of English elite women’s rugby – the Allianz Premier 15s. Warriors Women pride themselves on being a progressive, aspirational club who work with both international and local talent to maximise individual player growth and development. With all of Warriors Women’s home games being hosted on the state-of-the-art Artificial Grass Pitch at Sixways, and with access to outstanding training facilities, Worcester Warriors Women truly is the place to be for any ambitious female rugby player. Worcester Ladies were established in 1993 and since then the Club has gone from strength to strength, being crowned Premiership champions
for the first time in their 20year history in the 2012/13 season, and regularly finishing in the top four of the Women’s Premiership. In 2016, Worcester Ladies joined up with Warriors and were renamed Worcester Valkyries, before becoming Worcester Warriors Women ahead of the 2019/20 campaign signalling a new era for the team. The Club has a long history of international success, with many players going on to represent their countries in World Cups and international tournaments such as the Six Nations. Currently 7th in the table this season, like Lightning Warriors have won 1 and lost 3 of their opening games. Both teams will be keen to gain a second season from today’s game.
