LOUGHBOROUGH STUDENTS RFC V BLAYDON
RHYS EDWARDS
DIRECTOR OF RUGBY Welcome all to Loughborough University, where today we host Blaydon in another Round of National 2 North. We welcome all players and officials from the club, in what we hope will be another great game of National League Rugby. This weekend brings an end to a full season of rugby, and following a Covid hiatus, who would’ve thought this would be the case. It has been tough season for our young players, some haven’t played since they were 16, let alone played any senior rugby. Credit must go to everyone involved for being as competitive as we have, especially the coaches who have prepared the group over the year. This week’s opposition were also our first this year and it will be great to see how we finish and see how we have progressed over the season. Blaydon, I’m sure will be hoping to finish on a high, so it sets itself up for a great finish. Last week’s home game was another tense affair, but we managed to get ourselves across the line having played some good rugby. Bournville got themselves back into the game, but we held out and got a well-deserved win. With this being the last game of the season, we inevitably have to say goodbye to many students who graduate. I would like to wish them all the best in their future rugby careers and thank them for all that they have done for the African Violet jersey. We also say goodbye to Josh Toms, who has played an integral role in the development of the club over the past 6 years. From being a student, to club chair to now a player coach. Josh epitomises what it means to be a Loughborough Students player, and we wish him well with his new career as Director of Rugby at New Hall School. We must also say thank you to Jamie Taylor, who following 3 seasons, is moving on to work with Wasps Academy. Jamie over the years has helped shape our coaching structure and played a pivotal role in our talent development environment. His expertise and knowledge of coaching pedagogy has ensured that the coaching team are challenged and up to date with current best practice.
Thank you again for all that you have don’t for the club, and I wish you well for your next chapter. Good luck to all playing today, let’s get a final win and celebrate in style tonight at our club dinner. All the best Rhys Director of Rugby *Any further information regarding membership, please contact rugby@lboro.ac.uk for more information

students. They take the 3 as the wind is behind them in the first half. It does not take long for Loughborough to come back as Ryan Apps runs it over to give the students their second.
Loughborough hosted Bournville on Saturday, in a game where the wind play a big part in the game. Space opens up early on the wing, as Sam Blade makes the break, and Charlie Briers is able to finish it off giving Loughborough an early try in the 3rd minute. Bournville react as they charge down field, as forcing a penalty from the
Scrums and lineouts became a key part of the game, allowing both teams to advance down the field, which explains the 12-3 half time score line. A yellow card in the 44th minute for Bournville number 5 gives possibility for another Loughborough try by Ryan Apps, with Tom Smith converting. Bournville keep themselves in the game as their number 9 score a try, with the conversion being missed. Penalties begin to become important for
both sides and Bournville’s number 12 kicking 3 more in the 58th minute making the score 19-11. After some missed penalty kicks from Tom Smith, the game line is kept close. A 68th minute try by the Bournville number 18 Holliday brings the score to 19-16, and keeps the Loughborough students on their toes. However, the red card shown to Bournville number 9 seals the deal, as the students are able to secure the home win. By Lily Patey

ARCHIE HEARD
Officially established in 1988, the club first played at Path Head on the outskirts of the town, but in 1892, it moved to the Blaydon Racecourse before transferring to The Spike. During the next 25 years the ground moved between the two sites but after the First World War the Racecourse became the recognised ground with changing facilities housed in the Board Inn at Stella. The club remained at the Racecourse until it was purchased by the then North-eastern Electricity Board in 1951 to erect Stella Power Station which of course is now demolished. Upon leaving the Racecourse, the club moved to its present site “Crow Trees” at Swalwell and gradually over the succeeding years, the ground has been developed to include its stateof-the-art new clubhouse, stand, and two sets of match floodlights. Immediately after the Second World War in season 1945/46, Blaydon were unbeaten and boasted amongst their
players Martin Donnelly who became Blaydon’s first International Player when he played for England against Ireland in 1947. He also represented New Zealand many times at cricket, being one of the most cultured left-handed batsmen of his era. The move to Crow Trees was inspired by President Bob Williams and longserving Secretary of 50 years, Jack Brooks. Since this move to Crow Trees, the club has improved in stature, becoming a recognised force in Northeast rugby. 2021/22 sees Blaydon 1st team play their season in National Two North, after winning promotion from Premier North. Blaydon were 4 points clear at the top of North Premier in the 2019/20 season competing with Sandal, Harrogate, Macclesfield, and Billingham for promotion, when the RFU took the decision to cancel the remainder of the season due to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic.

A BRIEF HISTORY 1984 Rex Hazeldine is appointed as Head Coach leading the side to a UAU title and victory in the Leicestershire Cup. A touring Australian Universities side was also defeated.
1976
1919
1962-68
Loughborough College formed the original Rugby Union side in September 1919.
These were spectacular years for Loughborough, winning every UAU title except 1965. Gerald Davies, John Mantle, Dave Rollit, John Taylor, Bev Risman and Colin MacFadyean, became world class players. John Robins became the first British and Irish Lions coach.
1930 Loughborough Colleges competed in their first Universities Athletic Union competition, beating Nottingham University 8-0 in their first match.
1939 Loughborough Colleges reached the UAU final for the first time, losing narrowly to Swansea.
1953 Loughborough Colleges won the UAU for the first time.
Middlesex 7s winners: 1959, 1964 1966, 1970 and 1976.
1996 Loughborough enter the leagues at the bottom of the RFU pyramid.
The Student’s Unions of the University of Technology and the Loughborough Colleges merged and the Loughborough Students Rugby Club was formed. The team won the UAU in 1977, 1978 and 1979, with the 1978–79 side captained by the young centre Clive Woodward.
17
1970 The legendary Jim Greenwood coaches the Colleges to victory in the Middlesex Sevens, and the first UAU final at Twickenham. This side was probably the strongest ever, with six future internationals, Louis Dick, David Cooke, Clive Rees, Fran Cotton, Steve Smith, and Dick Cowman.
1997 Loughborough wins over Cambridge and Oxford in consecutive weeks signals the changing balance of power in student rugby.
1998 Ian Smith is appointed as the first full-time Director of Rugby.
2003 The World Cup winning England team was coached by six Loughborough alumni: Clive Woodward, Dave Alred, Andy Robinson, Dave Reddin, Phil Larder and Simon Hardy.
2005 Winning BUCS in 2005 breaks our longest spell without a BUCS victory.
2006 Real Varsity Match v Bath. Floodlights Appeal provides campus venue for the first ever rugby ‘event’ and engages alumni leading to the Vice Presidents club. A 3000+ crowd watched Loughborough beat Bath.
2008 Director of Rugby Dave Morris leads the side to promotion into National League 2 North, making the team the first student side to take part in the National Leagues.
2009 The Dan James Memorial Match Loughborough 23 – 20 England U20 A magnificent achievement for Dave Morris’ team and a suitably characterful performance through which to remember Dan.
2012 Loughborough v The Barbarians. A huge match to mark the opening of the Loughborough Stadium. Andy Robinson’s Barbarian side win 40– 7. Loughborough promoted into National League 1.
2016 Fiji win the first Olympic 7s competition coached by Loughborough alumni Ben Ryan, defeating Team GB in the process and fellow Loughborough alumni Phil Burgess.
2017 Loughborough Lightning enter the Tyrrells Premier 15s league.
