I would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge all of the excellent support Loughborough men’s football programme has behind the scenes. It has been a real pleasure to meet Alan Goodley, Gordon Watson and Shirley Horner in recent weeks who are the real heartbeat of this club alongside Margaret. We are all very grateful for your continued support. We have also welcomed Jake Nelson to our men’s football workforce as the team’s operation assistant, Jake will work alongside our very own Harriet Simes. We are all passionate about the development of our students and staff here at Loughborough, within the football programme and for this season Jamie has some fantastic individuals. I have had the pleasure of witnessing just how well Sim James, Nathan Redmond, Tom Iaciofano and Ethan Williams have all settled into Jamie’s backroom staff team. I look forward to watching you all grown and develop over the course of the Theseason.women’s Loughborough Lightning team are preparing for their first home game of the season where they will play Stoke City Women here at the Loughborough stadium on August the 21st, 4pm KO, in a special double header. It’s fantastic to have all of the fans with us as we embark on the start of our season in our home stadium. The grounds staff have done an excellent job throughout the summer to ensure the grass stadium pitch is looking beautiful. I know we are all hoping for a big performance and result today against a very good Wisbech team.

It is very early in the season and you often get some surprise results as squads start to settle in for the long season campaign but with 2 wins from the first 3 league game at the start of the season todays opponents Wisbech sit joint top of the league with 6 points so we look forward to what I’m sure will be a tough game today. As always thank you for your continued support and enjoy the game!

Todays game follows on from our recent FA Cup preliminary round win against Newark-Sherwood UTD. Newark started their season with 2 wins out of 2 in the league but a very good performance saw us win 5-1, and we can now look forward to an away tie at Carlton Athletic on the 20th August. The season at Loughborough University always brings lots of new faces to the performance and U21 development squads, as well as new volunteer support staff. I want to take this opportunity to welcome them all to the team for this season.
Hello and welcome to the Loughborough University stadium for our first home league game of the season! It was fantastic to see all of the fans in the stadium for my first competitive men’s game last weekend and what a fantastic result. Well done to all of the players and staff on the 5-1 win against Newark in the FA Cup preliminary round. I am looking forward to the next round.

With football becoming more popular after the First World War, the existing local clubs were no match for the other Town Clubs in the area, such as March and Kings Lynn. So a decision was made in 1920 to amalgamate three local clubs to form a Town football club which then entered the Peterborough and King’s Lynn Leagues – the latter won at the first attempt –while in the Amateur Cup they reached the First Round Proper in 1930/31 only to go out to the losing finalists InHayes.1995
2013/14 saw the Fenmen challenging for honours in the UCL after a 12-match winning run in the second half of the season put them in contention. The team ultimately finished 3rd after two away defeats in April cost the chance of runners-up spot as well.
TOWNWISBECH
After initially agreeing to stay on for the new season, Dick Creasey resigned as manager in June 2015 and was replaced by Brett Whaley. Brett’s tenure as manager started well, but after eight home defeats in the league, he resigned in late March 2016 and was replaced by the returning Dick Creasey. Once an inconsistent start to the 2016/17 season had been negotiated, the team finished 6th in the UCL and runners-up in the League Cup.
The Fenmen’s first season at the new level proved to be a difficult one, with a record low of only six wins in the League all season, but relegation was avoided thanks to 13 draws which meant the team finished in 17th place. Gary Setchell decided to end his tenure as manager after the end of the season and the club appointed Seb Hayes as his replacement, for his first job at this level. He was left with almost no players from the previous season and had had to build a squad virtually from scratch to compete in the BetVictor Northern Premier League Division One South East. Seb resigned in December 2019 with Wisbech bottom of the table and after a month with Seb’s former assistant Kev Ward in interim charge, Brett Whaley returned as manager, only for the season to be declared null and void after just four games due to the Coronavirus Lastpandemic.season, the team started badly and achieved only one win in the League (against Cleethorpes) and were knocked out of both FA competitions at the earliest opportunity. Covid then reared its head again and we look forward to the challenges of the NPL Midland Division with a few more local derbies!
The Fenmen again reached the First Round Proper of the FA Cup losing to Kingstonian. This stage in the competition was again attained in the next two seasons, the last making a second appearance in the Second Round Proper losing to Bristol Rovers in front of 3,500 spectators at Fenland Park. In the first season back in the ECL, under manager Ian Benjamin, the Club enjoyed a good FA Cup run, reaching the fourth qualifying round and enjoyed a 17-match unbeaten run in the League, eventually finishing in sixth place.
The next few seasons were disappointing, even flirting with relegation, previously unheard of for the Fenmen at this level. The appointment of Dick Creasey as manager in December 2004 saw an upturn in the Fenmen’s fortunes, finishing 4th in 2005/06, whilst a rather slow start to the 2006/07 campaign dented the Fenmen’s chances of challenging for the League, but a run to the 4th Qualifying Round of the FA Cup was a welcome distraction. Poor form at home meant a mid-table finish was always likely and with the purse strings being tightened, Dick decided to call it a day. The 2012/13 season saw the club finish runners-up to Dereham Town in the League but gained some consolation winning the Red Insure (ECL) Cup with a 2-1 win over Stanway Rovers. Promotion to Step 4 was declined during the close season and instead the club transferred to the United Counties League.

LOUGHBOROUGH STUDENTS FC A BRIEF HISTORY
2011/12 Stuart McLaren’s first term ended with a 5th place finish in the Midland Football Alliance and victory in the League Cup, the club’s highest ever honour so far. The League Cup was retained in 2012/13 as the side equalled their highest ever league finishing position in the MFA of 4th. In May 2012 the Loughborough University Stadium was opened with a showcase game against a Spurs Academy team. Many Loughborough Football graduates and staff also started to carve extremely successful Coaching roles in the Professional Game – a trend that continues to this day.
onto the 2018/19 season Alex Ackerley was appointed Head Coach continuing to work alongside Jamie Hawthorne, who has since moved in 2019/20 to work as an Academy Coach at Southampton FC.
2018/19 season ended in a County Cup Final appearance against Coalville Town, with the Ravens, who play at Step 3, winning the game 4 – 1 at Holmes Park.
1930-1970 Loughborough Men won their first University Championship in the 1938/39 season and the Leicestershire Senior League in 1940, after the war they returned to winning ways in the University competition (UAU) from 1947 – 1953, 1955, 1957 and 19591963, 1965, 1966 and 1969. In 1966 Loughborough became a University and also competed in the Leicestershire Senior League Division Two until 1972.
The 17/18 season also saw the appointment of Richard Allen as Director of Football, in January 2018. Richard joined from the FA where he was head of Talent ID. He has extensive knowledge of academy football with previous roles as Head of Academy at QPR and Head of Recruitment at ProgressingTottenham.
The 2016/17 saw the Scholars have one of their most positive starts to the MFL season in a number of years. However, a disappointing run in from December saw the 16/17 season fall away with the club finishing in 18th out of 22.
The 1970s was an extremely important decade for the Club. Three more University titles followed and former student and then lecturer, Mike Holliday, took up the reigns of Head Coach, a role he would continue into the mid-90s. Early signs of Mike’s rein included an away victory over a Manchester United XI.

The 21/22 season was a very successful season for Loughborough Students FC with the first team finishing 4th in the United Counties League as well as a record-breaking cup run in the Buildbase FA Vase, reaching the semi-final, before exiting the competition away from home after defeat to Littlehampton Town FC away from home.
Scholars celebrate their Centenary as well as a new challenge having been moved laterally during the off season into the Uhlsport United Counties Football League. The scholars were sitting in 4th place in mid March when the 19/20 season was deemed null and void due to the Coronavirus pandemic. Yet again the 2020/21 season was affected by the Covid19 virus and Alex Ackerley and his student coaches, Joel Bonner, Callum Crockard and Ben Day saw the season curtailed in January 2021, whilst sitting at the top of the league. Joel moved to Liverpool’s academy during December 2020 to work with the U16s and Ben to Burton Albion shortly after at the turn of the year. Callum will start 2021/22 on his course placement at Southampton, where he will be working in their academy.
PROGRESSING The 2021/22 season sees the club return to using the Loughborough Students name across all the teams, both in the leagues and BUCS competitions, the U21s will continue in MFL U21s East. This is a new chapter for the Scholars, with experienced, former professional player and pro-licence coach, ClaphamJamiearriving in the preseason as the new University Men’s Head Coach, together with the appointment of a new University Football Programme Manager, Harriet Simes, joining from Birmingham City Women, following the departure of Mat Stock to Wolverhampton Wanderers Academy and Alex Ackerley to Sunderland Academy. As always with Loughborough Students FC, you will see some new faces, not necessarily new students, but players who have worked their way through the programme from U21s to earn their place in the performance squad. Everyone is looking forward to the new season, continuing to build on the foundations that Mat and Alex have put in place.
LOOKING FORWARD Progressing into the 22/23 season, Rebecca Sawiuk has been appointed as Director of Football replacing Richard Allen who has moved onto a new role as Senior Football Executive and Technical Advisor to Yokohama FC based in Japan. We would like to place on record our thanks and appreciation to Richard for all his efforts in developing the Football Programme at the University which included the creation of our Women’s Football Performance
RebeccaProgramme.Sawiuk who was previously a Senior Lecturer at the University of Hertfordshire boasts an extensive career in football, including fulfilling roles at Regional Talent Centres, England Talent Camps, London Bees FC (Head Coach), Millwall Women (Manager), Oxford Girls Academy (Technical Director), Watford Football Club’s boys’ academy (Lead Coach) and Head Coach of the BT Sport Ultimate Goal series. We look forward to the 22/23 season working with Rebecca, to progress the football programme even further and to build on the fantastic progress already made. continuing to build on the foundations that Mat and Alex have put in place.
